Multicomponent mineral-phytogenic supplementation reduces Ascaridia galli shedding and systemic mycotoxin biomarkers while improving health and productive performance in laying hens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastrointestinal helminthiasis and dietary mycotoxin exposure can concurrently impair poultry health and productivity, whereas conventional control strategies generally target these challenges separately. This study evaluated whether a multicomponent mineral-phytogenic supplement could simultaneously reduce Ascaridia galli shedding and systemic mycotoxin exposure while improving hematological, hepatic, antioxidant, and productive responses in naturally challenged laying hens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty 26-week-old Lohmann Brown laying hens naturally infected with A. gall

Morphological and molecular identification of Kalicephalus sp. in the Yucatan Neotropical rattlesnake Crotalus tzabcan in Yucatan, Mexico.

Female nematodes were collected from the intestines of a road-killed Yucatan Neotropical rattlesnake, Crotalus tzabcan, in Yucatan, Mexico. Morphometric analysis of the nematode specimens allowed their identification to the genus Kalicephalus. However, the absence of male specimens prevented species-level identification. Notably, second- and third-stage larvae were observed in the reproductive tract of some Kalicephalus females. Additionally, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene, and the 28S rRNA gene (28S) were amplified and sequenced. Pa

Pragmatic weight estimation for dosing of a new paediatric treatment for schistosomiasis prevention and control in preschool-aged children: a feasibility study in Uganda and Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in endemic settings. The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium has developed a new paediatric treatment, arpraziquantel, for preschool-aged children. Because the treatment is dosed according to body weight, dose determination by scales poses operational challenges in community-based mass treatment campaigns. This study assessed the performance of the Pediatric Advanced Weight Prediction in the Emergency Room Extra-Long Mid-Arm Circumference (PAWPER XL-MAC) tape for weight estimation during mass drug administration in Uganda and Côte

Cross-sectional study of prevalence and economic importance of bovine fasciolosis at Kombolcha Elfora Abattoir, Amhara Region, Northern Ethiopia.

The study was conducted from October 2024 to June 2025 at the Kombolcha ELFORA abattoir and Processing Plant to assess the prevalence and economic impact of bovine Fasciolosis in cattle sourced from three agroecological zones in northern Ethiopia. From the 382 examined bovine samples, 184 faecal samples (48.17%) and 195 livers (51.05%) tested positive for Fasciolosis. Infection rates were highest in cattle with poor body condition (51.55% in faecal samples and 54.64% in livers), followed by medium (47.62% and 50%) and good body condition groups (20% and 25%, respectively), with significant dif

AcNR1F orchestrates epidermal remodeling to enable host adaptation in Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Nuclear receptor NR1F regulates circadian rhythms in mammals, metamorphosis in insects, and molting in free-living Caenorhabditis elegans; however, its role in parasitic nematode development remains elusive. Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a zoonotic pathogen that causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans, exhibits distinct host adaptation, with mice and most mammals serving as non-permissive hosts and rats as the permissive host. We combined multi-omic analyses, lentivirus-mediated RNAi, LC-MS/MS, and dual-luciferase assays to elucidate AcNR1F functions in development and host adaptation. Acnr1f

Development of a novel organoid-based two-dimensional system to model the intestinal host-parasite interface in fasciolosis.

BACKGROUND: The earliest interactions between Fasciola hepatica newly excysted juveniles (FhNEJ) and the intestinal epithelium remain poorly understood, partly due to the limited availability of physiologically relevant in vitro models. Here, we establish a human duodenum organoid-derived epithelial monolayer (ODM) co-culture system to investigate the early host-parasite interface, providing a controlled experimental platform for analysing interactions between FhNEJ and the intestinal epithelium. METHODS: ODMs representing the human duodenum were co-cultured with either live FhNEJ or a tegume

Human angiostrongyliasis: the past, present, and future.

Human angiostrongyliasis is an emerging foodborne zoonosis caused predominantly by Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus costaricensis, which produce distinct neurological and abdominal forms of disease, respectively. Human infection occurs primarily through ingestion of raw or undercooked gastropod intermediate hosts, paratenic hosts such as freshwater prawns and crabs, or fresh produce contaminated with infective third-stage larvae (L3). A. cantonensis is the principal cause of neuroangiostrongyliasis and eosinophilic meningitis, whereas A. costaricensis causes abdominal angiostron

Over-dispersion in malaria-schistosoma co-infection: insights from a meta-analytical approach and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and schistosomiasis are two major parasitic diseases that are co-endemic in many regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite their frequent geographical overlap, the potential epidemiological patterns and potential interactions associated with Plasmodium--Schistosoma co-infection remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to systematically assess the epidemiology of malaria-schistosomiasis co-infection and to quantify whether co-infections occur more frequently than expected under an assumption of independence between the two infections. METHODS: We conducted a systematic re

Parasite-Derived IL-33 Inhibitors Prevent Bleomycin-Induced Lung Fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung-scarring disease in which epithelial injury, consequent release of alarmins such as interleukin (IL)-33, and immune activation contribute to extracellular matrix deposition. The intestinal helminth Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri (Hpb) secretes immunomodulators that suppress type 2 immunity, including HpARI2, which binds IL-33, and HpBARI_Hom2, which blocks the IL-33 receptor ST2. Here, we test this parasite-derived dual blockade strategy in the bleomycin (BLM) mouse model, moving from live Hpb infection to administration of total Hpb

Heterologous antibody-based immunity in cattle naturally infected with Ostertagia ostertagi and Haemonchus sp.

Heterologous antibody‑mediated immunity was evaluated in cattle naturally infected with Ostertagia ostertagi (Oo) and Haemonchus sp. (Hp). Antibody responses were assessed using ovalbumin (OVA) as unrelated model antigen in three groups of eight heifers, matched for eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and allocated to independent, nematode‑free pastures. Anti‑OVA titers were determined in serum by ELISA. EPG counts and nematode genera were determined in feces using the modified McMaster technique and pooled cultures, respectively. All variables were analyzed using mixed models. One group was previous

Molecular characterization of Echinococcus species causing human cystic echinococcosis in Algeria: predominance of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto.

Genotyping of cystic echinococcosis (CE) specimens enables the identification of predominant species and genotypes, yielding critical insights into disease epidemiology. Species identification is essential for the development of effective prevention and control strategies. In this context, we assessed the molecular diversity of E. granulosus sensu lato among surgically confirmed human CE cases recruited from Algerian referral hospitals. Hydatid cysts were collected from 31 patients undergoing surgery for pulmonary and/or hepatic CE in Algeria between 2022 and 2024. Hydatid fluid, cyst wall, an

Population Pharmacokinetics and Exposure-Response Analysis of Arpraziquantel Supporting Dose in Preschool-Aged Children Infected with Schistosoma.

Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic parasitic disease that occurs mainly in sub-Saharan and African countries and for which no treatment is available in preschool-aged children (PSAC). An open-label, Phase III study of arpraziquantel pediatric formulation evaluated safety and efficacy in 280 Schistosoma-infected PSAC (NCT03845140). A population pharmacokinetics (PK) model for arpraziquantel and its active metabolite trans-4-hydroxy-arpraziquantel was developed from concentration measurements (from n = 74 and n = 30 children for arpraziquantel and its metabolite, respectively) after a singl

In vitro in-depth characterization of emodepside in combination with key anthelmintic drugs on soil-transmitted helminths.

Despite the enormous disease burden, treatments are limited for soil-transmitted helminthiasis. The handful of anthelmintic drugs suffer from variable and often insufficient efficacy against the pathogens. Resistance development, caused by high drug pressure, is an ongoing concern. New treatments are needed, and combination therapies may represent a promising therapeutic strategy. We explored emodepside as a partner in combination therapy and characterized drug-interaction effects with key anthelmintics in vitro against different soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Drug-interaction studies were

Fimbriarioides intermedia and F. lintoni (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae): molecular phylogeny, species status, and transmission in Arctic coastal ecosystems.

Cestodes of the genus Fimbriarioides (Hymenolepididae, Fimbriariinae) parasitise waterfowl and shorebirds in the Holarctic. Using molecular and morphological methods, we studied two Fimbriarioides spp. from sea ducks of the European North of Russia: the type species F. intermedia from eiders Somateria mollissima and S. spectabilis 1758 and a closely related species F. lintoni from a previously unrecognised host, Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca 1758. Our analysis also involved metacestodes Fimbriarioides sp. from barnacles Semibalanus balanoides of the Barents Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. Metacest

Climate Change and Socioeconomic Vulnerability: The Carpathian Basin as a Potential Hotspot in the Dissemination of Dirofilaria repens in Europe.

Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic parasite expanding across Europe due to climate change. We hypothesised that in this process, the Carpathian Basin has a facilitating effect. Using 426 georeferenced European cases, the probability of infection occurrence was determined in relation to climatic factors, surface water availability, regional social deprivation, and stray dog population density. To analyse the potential impacts of ecological and social factors (deprivation and stray dog population density), the MaxEnt algorithm, and spatial Empirical Bayes smoothing and bivariate local indicators o

Helminths of the invasive Podarcis muralis (Laurenti, 1768) and native P. tauricus (Pallas, 1814) wall lizards from two localities in southern Ukraine.

Helminth communities of the invasive Podarcis muralis and the native P. tauricus were investigated in southern Ukraine based on newly collected material and historical data. A total of nine P. muralis and 20 P. tauricus specimens were examined. Two helminth species were recorded in each lizard host. In P. muralis, the nematode Spauligodon saxicolae and cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Centrorhynchus globocaudatus were found, while S. saxicolae and the cestode Oochoristica tuberculata were found in P. tauricus. Historical data from 116 P. tauricus collected between 1951 and 1990 revealed a to

The development and validation of long-read ITS-1/5.8S/ITS-2 nemabiome metabarcoding for ovine gastrointestinal nematodes using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing.

Internal Transcribed Spacer ITS-2 rRNA nemabiome metabarcoding is increasingly used to characterize gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) communities. While powerful, current approaches have some limitations in their flexibility and applicability to smaller-scale studies and diagnostic use. The short read lengths provided by the Illumina platform may lack discriminatory power for some closely related species and also pose a challenge for new marker selection and primer design. To address these challenges, we have developed ITS-1/5.8S/ITS-2 rRNA Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) long-read metabarcod

Trophic niche segregation in small pelagic fishes suggests mesopelagic pearlsides as the main transmission pathway of Anisakis larvae in a Patagonian food web.

Many parasites are transmitted through trophic interactions, yet the specific pathways connecting intermediate and definitive hosts often remain poorly understood in marine food webs. In the Southwestern Atlantic, the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) has been considered a potential vector of larval Anisakis to higher trophic levels, but low infection levels in San Matías Gulf suggest alternative transmission routes in this gulf. We investigated the role of pearlsides (Maurolicus spp.), abundant mesopelagic fishes in the gulf, in the transmission of anisakid nematodes. Examination of 229
