Human and dog health are inextricably linked, and although our relationship with dogs brings numerous benefits for our well-being, it is known that they can transmit disease. Bariloche is a Patagonian tourist city with heterogeneous social composition. This cross-sectional study evaluates the population of free-roaming dogs and their intestinal parasites in relation to the socioeconomic level of the city's human population. Census areas were used as survey units, stratified in three levels according to socioeconomic status. The free-roaming dog population was estimated by walking around each c

BACKGROUND: Distribution of schistosomiasis is more focal due to spatial heterogeneities in intermediate host snail dynamics and water contact behavior of humans. This makes the search for new transmission foci of schistosomiasis and its connection with malacologically receptive water bodies essential for effective control of its transmission. This study was intended to assess the prevalence of intestinal helminth infections among schoolchildren and Schistosoma mansoni transmission in Koga irrigation scheme surroundings, northwest Ethiopia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional parasitologic

Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis is a serious zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. Lentinan (LNT) is known to modulate the intestinal environment with noted health benefits, yet the effect of LNT against intestinal helminth is unknown. In our study, we first observed that LNT could trigger worm expulsion by promoting mucus layer functions through alteration of gut microbiota. LNT restored the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria altered by T. spiralis infection to the control group level. Interestingly, LNT triggered the production of butyrate. Then, we determined the

Some helminth species belonging to the order Strongylida are parasites of the digestive tract of vertebrates, including man and domestic animals. In humans, infections with Oesophagostomum spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. may be misdiagnosed as hookworm disease on parasitological stool examination, mainly in regions where these infections are coendemic, since eggs released in hosts' feces are morphologically similar. This study presents the morphologic characterization of Strongylida larvae recovered from humans and pigs living in close proximity, exploring putative zoonotic cycles. One hundred

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminth infections are still public health problems in tropical and subtropical countries including Ethiopia. This review and meta-analysis aimed to produce the pooled prevalence and associated risk factors of human intestinal helminth parasitic infections (HIHPIs) in Ethiopia.
METHODS: Articles written in English were searched from online databases. Sixty-seven studies were included. Meta-analysis was computed using STATA version 14.
RESULT: The pooled prevalence of HIHPIs was (33.35%, 95% CI: 28.85%, 37.86%). Ascaris lumbricoides (10.84%, 95% CI: 9.34, 12.34), hookw

The present work aimed to study ecological aspects related to the distribution pattern of medically important and native freshwater mollusks, found in a rural municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Malacological captures were carried out in aquatic environments (lentic and lotic) from 46 locations between October 2018 and September 2019. The collected specimens were subjected to taxonomic identification and evaluation for infection with trematode larvae. Qualitative data were used to analyze the similarity and the odds ratios between the environmental variables. In total, 1125 spec

Swine parasites are a challenge for organic and alternative pig farmers and represent suboptimal animal health because use of chemical prophylaxis is not recommended. There is no comprehensive study of how prevalent gastrointestinal parasites are in organic or alternative pig farms across the USA. This study investigates prevalence, abundance, and intensity measures for three intestinal roundworm parasites (Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp. and Trichuris suis) on organic and alternative swine farms by quantifying their eggs in pig feces, pastured soil, and bedding. Nine farms raising pigs in

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a systemic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by migration of the second stage larva through viscera of humans. Despite being a foremost public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as India, larva migrans remains an untended zoonosis. Here, we report two cases of VLM who presented with fever and abdominal pain for a prolonged duration. On further investigation, marked peripheral eosinophilia with multiple confluent necrotizing eosinophilic granulomas were identified on histopathological examination of the liver.

We discuss the pathophysiology and epidemiology of Toxocara catis infection complicated by visceral larval migrans . We describe a previously healthy 19-month-old white male child found dead in bed by his mother. He had what was thought to be an upper respiratory infection for several days. The child had eosinophilic hepatitis and myocarditis complicating visceral larval migrans due to Toxocara catis infection from the family cat. We discuss the pathologic and clinical aspects of visceral larval migrans due to of Toxocara catis infection.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the soil-transmitted nematode by Strongyloides stercoralis, that affects approximately 600 million people worldwide. In immunosuppressed individuals disseminated strongyloidiasis can rapidly lead to fatal outcomes. There is no gold standard for diagnosing strongyloidiasis, and infections are frequently misdiagnosed. A better understanding of the molecular biology of this parasite can be useful for example for the discovery of potential new biomarkers. Interestingly, recent evidence showed the presence of small RNAs in Strongyloididae,

Strongyloides stercoralis is a helminth found in the soil and transmitted to humans through larval penetration of the skin. It is endemic across most of the tropical regions of the world. Infection with S. stercoralis commonly causes minimal or mild symptoms. This case report describes an interesting final diagnosis for a woman presenting with persistent nausea, vomiting and epigastric pain. Her evaluation included imaging and oesophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy. Her biopsy results revealed oesophageal candidiasis and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Important historical clues in this case i

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth ubiquitous in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It persists in the human host for a lifetime as a result of autoinfection and if undetected and untreated, can lead to increased morbidity and high mortality in immunocompromised individuals such as the transplant population. Transplant patients, including solid-organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplants (SOT and HSCT, respectively), are at a high risk of hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Unfortunately screening is often not systematically performed. P

Strongyloides stercoralis is responsible for a significant human parasitic infection known as strongyloidiasis. In addition, pulmonary strongyloidiasis is one of the most critical signs of disseminated strongyloidiasis. In this instance, S. stercoralis was unexpectedly discovered in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Strongyloidiasis is a frequent and often unrecognized parasitic disease because of the frequently asymptomatic nature and lack of sensitivity of diagnostic tests. Under conditions of immunosuppression (particularly systemic corticosteroid treatment), potentially fatal dissemination may occur. Thus, prevention and early diagnosis are important. Larva currens is a rare and pathognomonic cutaneous sign of strongyloidiasis, but is poorly described because of its unpredictable and fleeting occurrence. We report seven imported cases of larva currens seen in Paris between 1990 and 2020. We illustrate

Intestinal capillariasis is an emerging fish-borne helminthic disease caused by the round worm Capillaria philippinensis. Chronic infection may lead to death if the disease is misdiagnosed and inappropriate treatment is given. We used a rapid lateral-flow immunochromatographic test for screening of intestinal capillariasis in patients with chronic diarrhea. We screened 292 chronic diarrhea patients who had visited hospitals in Thailand. Sixty-six (22.6%) cases were positive according to the kit. All positive patients received mebendazole at 200 mg twice per day for 30 consecutive days or alben
