Eleven patients underwent free-flap reconstruction of tumor-related defects of the scalp, forehead, and temporal region. Flap selection aimed at achieving acceptable functional and aesthetic results combined with negligible donor-site morbidity. The results and complications of 104 vascularised fibular grafts in 102 patients are presented. Bony union was ultimately achieved in 97 patients, with primary union in 84 (84%). The mean time to union was 15.5 weeks (8 to 40). In 13 patients, primary union was achieved at one end of the fibula and secondary union at the other end. The results of the treatment of 36 patients with posttraumatic reflex sympathetic dystrophy of the upper extremity with regional intravenous blocks of methylprednisolone and lidocaine are presented. This retrospective study analyses the results of 80 shaft fractures of the radius treated by open reduction and plating by a volar approach. A case-control study of 232 cases of cutaneous malignant melanoma and 232 matched controls was performed to assess the association of the disease with nonmelanotic skin tumors--basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and solar keratoses. The transformation of hemostatic plugs in human skin wounds was studied in vivo after bleeding had stopped. Standardized bleeding time incisions were made on the dorsal side of the forearm of four normal male volunteers. A review was conducted of the records of fifty-five children who were admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto between 1955 and 1975 with a diagnosis of Volkmann's contracture in fifty-eight limbs. Hemorrhage into the hand and forearm in hemophiliacs can be devastating if not treated early and properly. Of 200 hemophiliacs followed from 1969 to 1976, thirty-four had lesions of the hand and forearm. Hemarthrosis, the most common musculo-skeletal manifestation of hemophilia, occurred in the wrist and hand on only ten occasions.
