BACKGROUND: Complete fractures and dislocations of the lower cervical spine are usually associated with severe spinal cord injury. However, a very small number of patients do not have severe spinal cord injury symptoms, patients with normal muscle strength or only partial nerve root symptoms, known as "lucky fracture dislocation". The diagnosis and treatment of such patients is very difficult. Recently, we successfully treated one such patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old male patient had multiple neck and body aches after trauma, but there was sensory movement in his limbs. However, pre

This case report outlines the effective use of the Titanium Elastic Nail System (TENS) for treating a peri-implant mid-shaft radius and ulna fracture in a patient with previous elbow arthrodesis and rotational full-thickness flap coverage. Given the paucity of literature surrounding this complex problem, we present a minimally - invasive treatment option which facilitated complete fracture healing, demonstrating the TENS's efficacy in complex orthopedic scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Reconstructing bone defects in the upper extremities and restoring their functions poses a significant challenge. In this study, we describe a novel workflow for designing and manufacturing customized bone cement molds using 3D printing technology to reconstruct upper extremity defects after bone tumor resection.
METHODS: Computer tomography data was acquired from the unaffected upper extremities to create a detachable mold, which can be customized to fit the joint precisely by shaping the bone cement accordingly. Fourteen patients who underwent reconstructive surgery following bo

BACKGROUND: Open and crushed forearm injury is a complex and rare injury affecting the upper extremity. It results in damage to various structures, including bones, soft tissues, and neurovascular bundles, ultimately leading to functional impairment. Typically, these injuries occur owing to high-energy trauma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old South Asian male was seen at our trauma center emergency department following an accident where his arm got entangled in a machine belt. He sustained a serious open injury on his left forearm, spanning from the elbow to the wrist, affecting the proximal

INTRODUCTION: Infected gap non-union is a serious complication seen in cases of diaphyseal fracture of forearm bones. It carries high morbidity in the form of severe functional impairment and poses a challenge to treat due to the complex anatomical relationship and articulations involved. Though there are multiple treatment options available, there are no guidelines for its management. Each case is unique and requires a customized, patient-specific approach.
CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old man sustained a road traffic accident with closed both bone forearm fracture 6 months ago and was treated els

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the proximal end of the humerus (FPH) are the second most common fractures in the upper limb after fractures of the distal radius and are two to three times as common in women than in men. Therefore, the main objective of the present study was to compare and analyze the complications and the functional outcomes in patients with displaced FPH receiving conservative and surgical treatments with intramedullary nailing.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to establish the differences in complications risks between surgical and non-surgical treat

INTRODUCTION: Congenital pseudoarthrosis is a rare disorder, and mostly occurs in the radius, ulna, tibia, and fibula, but is not reported in the femur. Congenital cases that were reported in the literature, most were associated with neurofibromatosis, cleidocranial dysostosis, congenital constriction band syndrome and fibrous dysplasia and the acquired cases followed fractures of bones or tuberculosis. Since the life span of the patient is affected rarely, clinical examination of these patients and serial radiographs can give us plenty of information about the limb abnormality, its clinical c

Pregnancy and lactation-associated osteoporosis (PLO) is a rare presentation of early-onset osteoporosis characterized by low trauma and spontaneous fractures during late pregnancy/lactation. Herein, we report areal BMD (aBMD) by DXA and volumetric BMD (vBMD), microarchitecture, and strength at the distal radius and tibia by HR-pQCT in 59 women with PLO-in comparison to both healthy premenopausal controls (n = 28) and premenopausal women with idiopathic osteoporotic fractures not associated with pregnancy/lactation (non-PLO IOP; n = 50). Women with PLO (aged 34 ± 6 yr) had a more severe clinic

Spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon has been reported to be uncommon. Several possible causes and precipitating factors have been reported for this rupture, including prior surgery to the distal radius. We report the case of an 18-year-old male professional athlete who presented with an inability to extend their left thumb. They presented with this condition after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for a fractured left distal radius. Findings were consistent with the rupture of the EPL tendon. The typical presentation of such a rupture is one to four month

It is extremely rare for blunt abdominal trauma to result in serious injuries to hollow organs. Degloving injuries of the colon are one of the rarest injuries following blunt abdominal trauma. Intestinal degloving is often seen following rapid deceleration, changes in velocity, crushes and motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Victims with intestinal degloving injuries can experience vague symptoms despite the severity of the lesion. We present the case of a 21-year-old male with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes who was involved in a high-speed MVC. He sustained second- and third-degree burns to t

The purpose of this study was to evaluate characteristics of reinjury following forearm fractures in adolescents. An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective cohort study of forearm fractures (ages 10-18 years) treated by a single academic pediatric orthopaedic group from June 2009 to May 2020 was conducted. All both bone forearm (BBFA) and radius or ulna primary and secondary injuries were included. We excluded open, surgically treated, physeal, epiphyseal, and radial head/neck fractures. Demographics, injury characteristics, and radiographic data were recorded. We evaluated associat

PURPOSE: Forearm fractures are the most frequent long bone fractures in children. There have been many reports of differences in leg length due to overgrowth in lower extremity fractures. However, reports of such overgrowth in fractures of the upper extremity are rare. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between angulation and overgrowth in pediatric radius fractures. We hypothesized that more angular deformation of the fracture would result in a periosteal transection and more overgrowth.
METHODS: Retrospectively, between 2013 and 2022, 14 patients under 16 years of

AIMS: The aims of this study were to identify means to quantify coronal plane displacement associated with distal radius fractures (DRFs), and to understand their relationship to radial inclination (RI).
METHODS: From posteroanterior digital radiographs of healed DRFs in 398 female patients aged 70 years or older, and 32 unfractured control wrists, the relationships of RI, quantifiably, to four linear measurements made perpendicular to reference distal radial shaft (DRS) and ulnar shaft (DUS) axes were analyzed: 1) DRS to radial aspect of ulnar head (DRS-U); 2) DUS to volar-ulnar corner of di

Introduction Greenstick and angulated forearm bone fractures are the most common fractures in children and invariably require closed reduction under anesthesia. However, pediatric anesthesia is somewhat risky and not always available in developing countries like India. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the standard (quality) of closed reduction without anesthesia in children and to determine satisfaction among parents. Materials and methods The present study included 163 children with closed angulated fractures of the distal radius and fracture shafts of both forearm bones, who were trea

BACKGROUND: Traumatic radial head dislocation (RHD) is a well-described injury in the pediatric population. It is usually associated with an injury to the ulna in Monteggia fracture-dislocation, although it can occur as an isolated injury. Traumatic RHD with ipsilateral radial shaft fracture has rarely been reported. Delayed RHD secondary to the malunion of an isolated radial shaft fracture is extremely rare.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a 9-year-old boy with limited pronation of the right elbow. The patient was diagnosed with delayed RHD associated with the malunion of a distal radial fracture. S

OBJECTIVES: Buckle fractures of the distal forearm are a common fracture entity in children treated conservatively. Diagnostics primarily include radiographs in 2 planes. Inadequate images may occur in the mostly very young patients. Therefore, additional lateral radiographs are often obtained to assess a possible angular tilt. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a strictly lateral x-ray image has an influence on fracture management.
METHODS: Seventy-three children with buckle fractures of the distal forearm were included in this retrospective analysis. All cases were analyzed by

Congenital proximal radioulnar synostosis limits prono-supination and is often well tolerated. Only one publication in the literature describes a fracture associated with this malformation. We report a case of radius and ulna shaft fractures in a 35-year-old patient with well-tolerated bilateral proximal congenital proximal radioulnar synostosis.
