Behavioural manipulation of the cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala L): Prospects for push-pull strategies in oilseed rape.

The cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB, Psylliodes chrysocephala L) is a major pest of oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L), especially in temperate regions where it is challenging the sustainable production of the crop. Conventional management has relied almost exclusively on synthetic insecticides, yet increasing regulatory restrictions, pest resistance and environmental concerns require the urgent development of alternative strategies. Semiochemicals, chemical cues that mediate inter- and intraspecific behavioural interactions, offer considerable potential for integration into push-pull pest ma

Why does classic scabies spare the adult scalp? A site-specific barrier hypothesis.

Dear Editor, The relative sparing of the scalp and face in immunocompetent adults with classic scabies is clinically familiar, whereas these sites may be involved in infants, older adults, immunocompromised patients, and crusted scabies. This distribution is commonly used as a diagnostic clue, but its biological basis remains incompletely explained. [...].

Engineering Vibrio natriegens for biopesticide production: from pathway optimization to plant protection.

Phytopathogens pose a persistent threat to global crop production, necessitating the development of sustainable biocontrol strategies. Microbial biopesticides offer a promising alternative to chemical pesticides; however, their industrial application is frequently constrained by low production titers and high substrate costs. This study reprograms the phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) biosynthetic pathway in Vibrio natriegens, a fast-growing marine bacterium with broad carbon utilization capability. A modular plasmid toolbox is constructed through systematic optimization of promoters, ribosome

Epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait Islands, Australia, 2000-2025 and the public health response to three recent outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Australia was declared malaria free in 1981. However, the proximity of Australia's Torres Strait region to malaria-endemic Papua New Guinea (PNG), and the presence of the Anopheles mosquito across Northern Australia, means there is an ongoing risk of malaria for many Australian residents. This paper describes the epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait region between 2000 and 2025 and reports the public health response to three malaria outbreaks between 2023 and 2025. METHODS: Case data from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2025 were extracted from the Queensland Notifiable Cond

Myroides bacteremia associated with wound myiasis: A case report and focused literature review.

Myroides is a gram-negative rod that most commonly affects immunocompromised hosts. Traditional risk factors for infection include soil or water exposure, but one less well-described risk factor is myiasis: the infestation of living tissue by maggots. We present a 50-year-old man with end-stage liver disease and chronic lower-extremity wounds who developed Myroides bacteremia in association with nonsterile maggot infestation. A literature review of PubMed, Ovid (Embase and MEDLINE), Web of Science, and Scopus identified three other cases of Myroides infection in the setting of myiasis. Myroide

Scabies Diagnosis: A Narrative Review of Diagnostic Methods, Clinical Misdiagnosis, and Emerging Directions.

Caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, scabies is considered a neglected tropical disease that mainly affects the young, elderly and the immunocompromised. The prevalence of scabies is highest in Western Pacific island nations. Despite the high prevalence and recent outbreaks in several high-income countries like the United Kingdom and New Zealand, scabies remains a frequently misdiagnosed disease. Scabies diagnosis often depends on clinical suspicion and the experience of the examining clinician. It is often misdiagnosed as other dermatological conditions like eczema or insect bites due to the

[Bed bugs, lice and fleas-an up-to-date overview of diagnosis, treatment and prevention].

Despite high standards of hygiene, ectoparasites remain a significant issue in dermatology. Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) have become significantly more prevalent worldwide over the past two decades, whilst head lice infestation (Pediculus humanus capitis) remains one of the most common parasitic infections in children. Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) are predominantly transmitted sexually. Body lice (Pediculus humanus corporis) are rare in Central Europe, but remain of infectious disease significance as vectors of Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana and Borrelia recurrentis. Flea bites in hum

Generalized Megaesophagus Concurrent With Toxocariasis in a Cat.

Feline megaesophagus is a rare disorder characterized by esophageal hypomotility and dilation, resulting in regurgitation, weight loss, and occasionally death. This report describes the clinical and paraclinical findings of generalized megaesophagus with a possible contribution of toxocariasis in a kitten. A 2-month-old female cat was referred with chief complaints of lethargy, hyporexia, dyspnea, and vomiting/regurgitation. Physical examination of the kitten revealed bradycardia, bradypnea, hypothermia, dehydration, and lung crackles. The most notable laboratory results were leukopenia with s

Contemporary Anopheles vector species distribution in Scotland and its association with historical hotspots of malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: Malaria poses a significant threat to public health in tropical regions, with nearly half of the global population at risk. Historically, transmission was common in temperate regions including northwestern Europe, with records indicating that malaria was prevalent in Scotland until the early nineteenth century. While current environmental and epidemiological conditions are unsuitable for transmission, future climate, environmental, and land-use change may alter the receptivity of Scotland to malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. As a first step to assess the potential for futu

Host Compatibility of the Temnocephalid Diceratocephala boschmai: Experimental Transmission Between Invasive Cherax quadricarinatus and Native Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of host-associated symbionts by invasive species threatens native aquatic biodiversity through symbiont spillover and host switching. This study investigated the experimental host-specificity and transmission potential of Diceratocephala boschmai from invasive Cherax quadricarinatus to the native giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. METHODS: Briefly, temnocephalid-infested C. quadricarinatus were exposed to symbiont-free M. rosenbergii and C. quadricarinatus for 30 days. Thereafter, symbiont transmission was assessed, and host hemolymph parameters, in

From co-existence to collaboration: The need to move towards an inclusive (pluricultural) scabies management approach in Debre Elias (Ethiopia).

Several large scabies outbreaks have occurred in the Amhara region of Ethiopia since 2015, and biomedical interventions focused on mass drug administration are often deployed to contain the disease. However, there is a persistent scabies incidence in the Amhara region. To understand this, we sought to explore how people living in Debre Elias understand and seek to manage scabies in their everyday lives. We collected data via a rapid ethnographic approach which included observations and semi-structured interviews. Fieldwork was conducted from February to July 2022 and involved 57 interviews wit

Scalp infestation by Pthirus pubis in a 91-year-old woman: A rare cause of chronic scalp pruritus.

Pthirus pubis is an ectoparasite that typically infests pubic hair and is primarily transmitted through close sexual contact. Although extragenital involvement may occur, scalp infestation remains exceptionally uncommon. We report the case of a 91-year-old woman who presented with a two-month history of persistent scalp pruritus that failed to respond to oral terbinafine and ketoconazole shampoo. Dermatological examination revealed numerous adult lice and nits attached to scalp hairs, with additional involvement of the eyelashes, eyebrows, and pubic region. Microscopic examination confirmed Pt

Epidemiological and molecular insights into human lice (Anoplura: Pediculidae) in France: genetic diversity and DNA barcoding.

Human lice are hematophagous ectoparasites of worldwide distribution and public health concern. Despite their medical importance, the genetic diversity of these ectoparasites remains poorly documented, with only one prior study conducted in France. In this study, we investigated the distribution and genetic diversity of human louse populations collected from patients referred to Avicenne Hospital, northern Paris, between 2019 and 2023. A total of 209 specimens, one per patient, were examined: 186 head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis), 11 body lice (Pediculus h. corporis), and 12 pubic lice (Pt

Understanding malaria vector dynamics and transmission in the Pouth-Kelle community, Nyong et Kelle division, Centre Region, Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in tropical regions. The disease is driven by multiple Anopheles vector species with varied ecological and behavioral traits. In transitional zones like the forested Pouth-Kelle community, detailed knowledge of vector dynamics and disease transmission remains limited. This study aimed to characterize local Anopheles species composition, biting behavior, and malaria transmission indicators to guide control strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2021 to January 2022, adult mosquitoes were monthly collected indoors and

Efficacy of a bead formulation of MCH for protecting live Douglas-fir from infestation by Dendroctonus pseudotsugae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, antiaggregation pheromone, 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (MCH), has been used operationally in western North America to protect high-risk, high-valued trees during outbreaks since the spring of 2000. The most commonly used formulation of MCH is a bubble capsule manufactured by several different companies. Bubble capsules are made of 2 layers of plastic film that breakdown very slowly under natural conditions requiring resource managers to remove them after treatment in some situations. In this study, a small bead formulation of MCH (Herc

Routine insecticide regimes restructure flower-inhabiting thrips on star fruit: suppression of Megalurothrips typicus, resilience of Thrips levatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

Differential responses to Melanaphis sorghi (Hemiptera: Aphididae) reveal diverse resistance mechanisms across sorghum genotypes.

Sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi  Theobald) is a major constraint to sorghum production, making the identification of resistant germplasm essential for sustainable management. Understanding plant resistance mechanisms is crucial for developing effective pest management strategies. This study assessed resistance mechanisms in a panel of sorghum genotypes representing broad geographic origins and possible genetic diversity using antixenosis, antibiosis, and tolerance assays. Antixenosis assays demonstrated that the genotypes ICRISAT 29, ICRISAT 218, Lunuo 45A, and Tx2783 possessed strong antixen

Household and community drivers of Aedes aegypti infestation in tropical cities: Guiding community-led interventions.

Disadvantaged communities characterised by poor sanitation conditions, overcrowding, and limited vector control are highly susceptible to Aedes aegypti proliferation and arboviral disease transmission. Effective mosquito vector control requires a detailed understanding of Ae. aegypti oviposition preferences and spatial distribution within such urban environments. This study aimed to identify key environmental and behavioural drivers of Ae. aegypti proliferation in disadvantaged communities of Salvador, Brazil, combining household surveys, entomological assessments, and remote sensing to guide
