Nosocomial oral myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana in Iran: A new case and review of human myiasis in the country.

Chrysomya bezziana can potentially cause myiasis, a condition in which fly larvae infest living tissue in humans and animals. Contributing factors to this rare ailment include poor oral hygiene, alcohol abuse, and infected wounds. Hospital-acquired myiasis, a rare type of myiasis, occurs in patients following hospital admission. Herein, we report a case of C. bezziana oral myiasis in an 89-year-old female patient hospitalized in northeastern Iran. In this article, we also present an updated review of reported human myiasis cases in Iran up to 2025. According to our findings, C. bezziana has be

Factors affecting the infestation status of African sugarcane stalk borer (Eldana saccharina Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Tanzania.

Sugarcane is an important crop that contributes substantially to sugar production globally and across Sub-Saharan Africa. However, its productivity is constrained by stem borer infestations, particularly Eldana saccharina. The pest reduces sugarcane yield by up to 30% and about 18% of sucrose content is compromised. Nonetheless, the influence of ecological parameters on its pest status in Tanzania remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the influence of season, altitude, crop age, and sugarcane variety on E. saccharina infestation in Tanzania. A stratified multistage cross-sectional su

Consecutive ocular and nasal myiasis in an immunocompetent female: A case report.

Nasal myiasis is an exceptionally rare parasitic infestation caused by dipteran fly larvae invading the nasal cavity, typically occurring in immunocompromised individuals or those with poor sanitation exposure. This report presents the first case of nasal myiasis following primary ocular involvement in an otherwise healthy immunocompetent Syrian woman, challenging the classical understanding of risk factors and pathogenesis. The patient initially presented with unilateral ocular symptoms including foreign body sensation and photophobia, with subsequent mechanical extraction of larvae. Ten days

Genomic signatures of adaptation across a landscape of crickets following the introduction of a parasitoid fly.

Novel species interactions provide an opportunity to assess the earliest stages of genetic adaptation. We combined population genomics and field selection surveys to explore the genomic and geographic landscape of adaptation in small, fragmented Hawaiian cricket populations, which are parasitized by larvae of an introduced fly that targets singing males. Multiple protective male-silencing cricket morphs have recently spread under this novel selection pressure, despite song's important roles in mate attraction. We find evidence of sharp declines in cricket effective population sizes following t

Haplotype-resolved genome assemblies for the New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), using the trio binning approach.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate parasite of warm-blooded animals and a major pest of livestock and wildlife in the Americas. The first genome assembly for C. hominivorax enabled substantial progress in key areas including gene expression related to fly behavior and physiology and gene editing technologies. However, the first genome was sequenced prior to several technological advances that result in fewer errors and better genome annotations. Here, we used the trio-binning approach to produce haplotype-resolved genome assemblies of C. hominivorax. A single male

In water, no one can hear you scream: a new species of parasitic isopod from the genus Zeuxokoma Grygier, 1993 (Isopoda: Epicaridea, Cryptoniscidae) infesting a snapping-shrimp (Caridea, Alpheidae) from Brazil.

Isopods of the suborder Epicaridea Latreille, 1825 are obligatory parasites of other crustaceans, using them as intermediate and definitive hosts during their life cycles. All species of the family Cryptoniscidae Kossmann, 1880 are endoparasitic or mesoparasitic, and can be found as direct parasites of decapods or as hyperparasites of rhizocephalan barnacles infesting decapod hosts. Females usually lose all body segmentation, lacking antennae, pereopods, oostegites and pleopods, and their bodies have two portions, an anterior portion that is embedded in the host cuticle and a posterior one tha

An Immigrant With Intestinal Myiasis in the United States: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

Myiasis is an infestation of human tissue by fly larvae. Intestinal myiasis occurs when fly eggs or larvae in contaminated food or water survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract and are found in the stool or bowel lumen. It is more prevalent in developing countries and can present with nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic common conditions. A 55-year-old Nepalese-American woman, with a long history of intermittent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, underwent CT imaging, which demonstrated a 2 cm colonic narrowing with wall thickening of the proximal transverse colon. Transcriptome Analysis of the Larch Bud Gall Midge, Dasineura rozhkovi Mamaev et Nikolskij: De Novo Assembly, Phylogeny and Sexual Dimorphism.

The larch bud gall midge (Dasineura rozhkovi Mamaev et Nikolskij) is one of the main pests infesting larches. Its activity causes developmental defects and a noticeable decrease in population growth in adult Siberian larches (Larix sibirica Ledeb.). Due to its complex life cycle and active presence in areas of human habitation, this insect is difficult to exterminate using common methods. D. rozhkovi has not been studied before with the use of sequencing technologies, which means there is no information on the mechanisms occurring in its body at the molecular level. Here, we present for the fi

A Comparative Analysis of the Responses of Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macqart) (Calliphoridae) to Different Reflectance Levels of Green and Yellow Light Hues.

Proximate visual cues play a crucial role for flies (Order: Diptera) in locating suitable foraging and oviposition sites. This study examined the behavioural responses of two sheep myiasis-causing blowfly species in Australia, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), to six different reflectance levels of green and yellow hues. Both species were influenced primarily by reflectance intensity and proximity to the light source. Lucilia cuprina displayed a nonsignificant preference for moderate yellow (p = 0.25), whereas Ch. rufifacies showed a significant attraction to mod

Neglected Myiasis Wound Presenting With Septic Shock: A Case Report.

Myiasis is larval infestation of tissues, particularly common in tropical, and subtropical regions, especially in pre-existing wounds. Poor hygiene, inadequate wound care, and exposed wounds, can predispose to secondary bacterial infection. We report a case of neglected myiasis wound in a laborer from rural Nepal presenting with septic shock, who was managed with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, wound care, and delayed skin grafting, resulting in complete functional recovery.

Advanced Periorbital Squamous Cell Carcinoma Complicated by Extensive Facial Myiasis in a Homeless Patient: A Case Report.

Facial myiasis is an uncommon but severe complication associated with neglected malignant lesions, particularly in socially vulnerable patients. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the facial region may exhibit aggressive local behavior when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. The authors report a rare case of extensive facial myiasis associated with infiltrative periorbital SCC in a homeless patient. A 57-year-old man presented with a large ulcerated periorbital lesion and active infestation. Emergency management included blood transfusion, systemic ivermectin, and surgical debridement with mec

Critical care, surgical management, xenotransfusion, and long-term monitoring in a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) with severe traumatic injury.

This case report describes the advanced critical care, surgical management, and one-year outcome of a free-ranging adult male maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) presenting with severe polytrauma and concomitant renal dioctophymosis. The animal was rescued with a severely contaminated open tibial fracture associated with extensive soft tissue necrosis and active myiasis, rendering limb-sparing procedures unfeasible. A high pelvic limb amputation was therefore performed as a life-saving intervention. Diagnostic imaging and ultrasonography revealed extensive destruction of the right kidney caused

Ultrastructure of mouthpart and terminalia in Musca crassirostris (Diptera: Muscidae) with molecular confirmation from Thailand.

Musca crassirostris Stein, 1903 (Diptera: Muscidae) is a medically and veterinary important hematophagous fly whose feeding activity causes significant irritation and blood loss in livestock and is occasionally associated with human myiasis. Although this species is widely distributed and epidemiologically relevant, its feeding-related functional morphology and genital diagnostic characters have remained insufficiently documented at the ultrastructural level. Here, we present the first comprehensive scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based characterization of the labellar feeding apparatus and

Biological reinvasion of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Mexico: impacts and risks under different climate change scenarios.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an obligate parasitic fly that causes severe myiasis in livestock, wildlife, and humans, generating substantial economic and public health impacts. Following its historical eradication from North and Central America through sterile insect technique (SIT) programs, recent outbreaks in Central America and southern Mexico indicate ongoing biological reinvasion. We evaluated current and future environmental suitability for C. hominivorax using ecological niche modeling (Maximum Entropy [MaxEnt]) calibrated with 1,972 occ

Complement, coagulation and NET pathway activation underlies early host response to blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Blowfly strike (myiasis), caused mainly by Lucilia spp., poses a serious animal welfare concern and results in substantial economic losses to the global sheep industry. However, the early molecular and proteomic responses of sheep skin to larval infestation are not well characterised. METHODS: The early proteomic response in sheep skin following infestation by blowfly Lucilia cuprina larvae was assessed in 14 Merino ewes, 7 from a group selected for breech strike resistance and 7 from a non-selected group. Control sites were also established using mock dental plugs without blowfly
