Local implementation of scalable malaria molecular surveillance in a low-resource setting: a North-South collaborative model.

Molecular surveillance of malaria vectors remains critically underutilized in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to limited human capacity and technical resources, despite the region bearing the highest global burden of malaria. In a North-South collaborative effort, Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) built capacity and improved on existing computational capabilities in line with molecular surveillance of Anopheles gambiae, the primary malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa. We interrogated an amplicon panel capable of simultaneously detecting 55

Impact of naturally occurring target-site polymorphisms on an autonomous Cas9/guide RNA-based gene drive system for population modification of Anopheles gambiae s.l.

Malaria remains a significant global health challenge with an estimated 282 million cases reported in 2024. CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-drive systems have emerged as promising tools to block Plasmodium transmission by mosquito vectors. The TP13 drive system targets the Anopheles gambiae cardinal (Agcd) gene and carries 2 engineered monoclonal antibodies to achieve rapid population modification to prevent parasite transmission. Previous cage trials demonstrated complete drive introduction in 3 to 6 generations and supported modeling predicting a potential >90% reduction in malaria incidence under op

Genetic diversity and morphology of South Korean Aedes koreicus (Diptera: Culicidae) provide insights into the origin of European populations.

BACKGROUND: Aedes koreicus (Edwards, 1917) is native to Korea, northern China, and the Russian Far East, and has gained attention following its first detection in Europe in 2008 and subsequent spread across Europe. The Korean Peninsula, which includes the type locality of Ae. koreicus, has been regarded as a potential source region for invasive populations of this species, along with other parts of its native range. However, little is known about the genetic and morphological attributes of Korean populations. METHODS: We obtained DNA from 172 specimens of Ae. koreicus from 19 populations in S

Use of pour-on formulations of fluralaner in prophylactic treatments against Cochliomyia hominivorax in newborn calves under extensive grazing systems.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pour-on fluralaner formulations for the prevention of cutaneous myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in newborn calves under field conditions. Three field trials were conducted in Argentina, including subtropical and temperate regions. In Trial 1, calves with unhealed navels were assigned to two fluralaner-treated groups with different commercial pour-on formulations and an untreated control group. In Trial 2, two groups of newborn calves were treated either with fluralaner pour-on or injectable doramectin. Trial 3, where 84 calves wer

[Myiasis: a practical approach].

Myiasis refers to the infestation of humans or other vertebrates by dipteran larvae that feed on living or necrotic tissue. It occurs worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Furuncular myiasis presents as a painful, erythematous, furuncle-like nodule with a central breathing pore, often accompanied by serous discharge and a sensation of movement. In Central and South America, it is caused by Dermatobia hominis, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, Cordylobia anthropophaga is the predominant causative species. While D. hominis transfers its eggs to humans via blood-feeding arthro

Necrotizing fasciitis secondary to Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica in the absence of myiasis.

Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica is a rare Gram-negative bacillus associated with fly larvae, myiasis, chronic wounds, and severe polymicrobial infection. We report a 71-year-old woman with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, severe peripheral vascular disease, and previous contralateral above-knee amputation who presented with septic shock secondary to an infected right hallux ulcer. Radiographs demonstrated soft-tissue gas extending into the distal calf. Emergency exploration revealed extensive necrosis and dishwater pus tracking proximally along the flexor hallucis longus tendon, consistent wi

[Tungiasis: from travel-associated dermatosis to a neglected tropical disease].

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by the penetration of female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans) into the epidermis. It is endemic in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa and occurs in Europe predominantly as a travel-associated dermatosis. Characteristic lesions are whitish-yellow papules or nodules with a central dark punctum, predominantly affecting the feet and often accompanied by erythema, pruritus, and pain. Severe infestations may lead to ulceration, nail dystrophy, and secondary bacterial infections. In low-income endemic communities, particularly among chil

Wound myiasis caused by Lucilia spp. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a dog and a cat in Korea.

This study presents 2 cases of wound myiasis in a dog and a cat involving morphological and molecular identification in Korea. A 7-year-old male Jindo mix dog, Canis familiaris, was admitted to a veterinary clinic in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, in July 2024. The bite wound near the right rib was infected with maggots. We carefully removed the 5 maggots using forceps. The wound healed without any subsequent complications. A Korean Shorthair stray cat, Felis catus, was brought to the same clinic in October 2024 after being hit by a car. The maggot-infected wounds were found in the anus

New world screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae): past, present and future.

The New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is one of the most important parasites of livestock and wildlife in the Americas. Research conducted during the last 100 yr has formed the foundation of the most successful insect control program in the world: the NWS eradication program. The program eradicated NWS from North and Central America and established a biological barrier at the Isthmus of Panama in 2004 using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Except for a brief incursion in the Florida Keys in 2016, the last case of NWS in the United States was in 1982. Since the e

Ultrastructure of antennal sensory organs in Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae).

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner 1861) is the sole causative agent of vaginal myiasis in Bactrian camels, and its antennal sensilla serve as essential sensory organs for detecting environmental chemical cues. However, no systematic study has been reported on the morphology of antennal sensilla in male and female. Here, we examined and compared the antennal morphology of male and female W. magnifica using scanning electron microscopy. The antennae consist of 3 main segments, the scape, pedicel, and funiculus, with an arista arising from the funiculus. Four sensillum types were identified: chaetic

Wound Myiasis Complicating a Malignant Wound Caused by Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Lip: A Case Report.

Wound myiasis is a relatively rare condition characterized by the infestation of an open wound with fly larvae and may complicate malignant wounds associated with locally advanced cancers. We report a case of wound myiasis complicating a malignant wound caused by locally advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the upper lip. An octogenarian man with MCC of the left upper lip (cT2N1M0, Stage III) developed local recurrence after radiotherapy and was subsequently treated with avelumab followed by paclitaxel. Five days after the second cycle of paclitaxel, he presented with a chief complaint of t

Skin Disease After Refugee Resettlement: A Practical 90-Day Approach for Dermatologists and Primary Care Physicians.

The first months after refugee resettlement create an opportunity to identify transmissible, disabling, and undertreated skin disease. In the United States, the domestic medical examination generally occurs 30-90 days after arrival, but the clinical principles are relevant across resettlement systems. We conducted a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed publications and organizational or public-health sources. Evidence varied by migration stage, region, age, and referral pathway; camp and specialty-clinic data should not be treated as post-resettlement prevalence estimates. Physicians s

Global Mapping and Trends in Scabies Research Over Four Decades: A Bibliometric Analysis Supporting the WHO Elimination Agenda.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease with at least 200 million people affected worldwide at any one time and a disproportionate burden in resource-limited settings. Although World Health Organization (WHO) prioritization has increased attention to scabies control, the evolution, geographic distribution, collaboration patterns, and policy alignment of the global research landscape remain incompletely characterized. This study mapped publication trends, research inequities, and thematic shifts in relation to the WHO control agenda. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted u

Host range of Microsporidia MB in aquatic macrofauna inhabiting Anopheles breeding sites.

Microsporidia MB, a recently discovered endosymbiont Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes, shows great potential as a malaria-blocking tool due to its Plasmodium-blocking phenotype. The symbiont utilizes vertical (mother-to-offspring) and horizontal (sexual) transmission routes to propagate across anopheline populations. Microsporidia MB occurs throughout the Anopheles life cycle, with no evidence to date of the existence of a secondary host. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive molecular screening of Microsporidia MB in aquatic macrofauna associated with Anopheles larval habitats to determi

Genome-wide host-associated population structure of Sarcoptes scabiei: One Health implications.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, affects more than 200 million people at any one time and can be complicated by severe secondary bacterial disease. The same mite causes sarcoptic mange in companion animals, livestock and wildlife. Population-scale nuclear genomic data spanning diverse hosts and geographical regions remain limited. METHODS: We generated whole-genome sequence data for 106 S. scabiei samples and incorporated 19 publicly available datasets from humans, companion animals, livestock and wildlife. After quality filtering, 83 of 125 sample-level datasets wer

Parasite hideouts: Preserving native cavity-nesting Hymenoptera through pollinator hotel management.

As many pollinator populations around the world decline due to habitat loss, improving management practices for native pollinators becomes a priority. Pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems and play irreplaceable roles in the global food system. Pollinator hotels can provide a safe, protected space suited for many different species, and can also be used as educational tools. However, these structures also often contain parasites attracted to the nests within, which can multiply without maintenance. Pollinator hotels are usually filled with nesting cavities in a variety of materials in

First record of Phlebotomus sergenti (Diptera: Psychodidae) in China and its potential epidemiological implications.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly bites. Phlebotomus sergenti is a principal vector of Leishmania tropica, causing anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) across the Mediterranean, North Africa, South Asia, and West Asia. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in northwestern China, is a well-recognized endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), with sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis cases also documented in the region. Nevertheless, Ph. sergenti has never been reported in China prior to this study. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Fie

Cutaneous tumbu fly myiasis in a returning child traveller and a novel EMLA-assisted extraction technique in paediatric emergency care.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by dipterous larvae and is an important diagnostic consideration in travellers returning from endemic regions with infected skin lesions. Paediatric cases present unique management challenges, particularly when invasive procedures or general anaesthesia are considered. We report a case of cutaneous myiasis with associated cellulitis in a toddler following travel to Gambia, caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga (tumbu fly). A novel non-operative approach using eutectic mixture of local anaesthetic cream was successfully employed to facilitate larval extrac
