BACKGROUND: There is a high rate of redisplacement after closed reduction and cast treatment of displaced both-bone forearm shaft fractures in children. Little evidence is available on the efficacy of rereduction of these redisplaced fractures. This study evaluates the impact of rereduction on radiographic outcomes and compares the cost to surgical stabilization.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 31 children (mean age, 6.3 y; 18 boys) treated with rereduction for redisplacement of a displaced both-bone forearm shaft fracture between 2008 and 2013. Angulation was measured on anteropos

INTRODUCTION: Clinically significant distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) injuries can occur with radial shaft fractures. Several radiographic methods of diagnosis, such as radial shortening of >5mm or fracture line within 7.5cm from the lunate facet, have been proposed but not clinically validated. The purpose of this study was to compare radiographic measurements of radial shaft fractures associated with and without clinically significant DRUJ injury (i.e., true Galeazzi fracture-dislocation) in order to evaluate the predictive value of reported parameters of DRUJ injury.

Till now we know two fracture pattern in forearm fracture dislocation, Galeazzi fracture dislocation which is defined as fracture of radial shaft with distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation and Monteggia fracture dislocation which is ulnar fracture with radial head dislocation. During this case report we present a case with simultaneous distal and proximal radioulnar dislocation and radial shaft fracture which is extremely rare fracture pattern and could be a new entity in forearm bones fracture dislocation.

BACKGROUND: Postoperatively, radial shaft fractures are often followed clinically with serial radiographs to assess for fracture healing. Currently, there is no standard of care regarding postoperative imaging for these injuries. The purpose of this study is to determine whether imaging influences management decisions.
METHODS: Patients who presented to a level I trauma center between 2009 and 2014 with an operatively treated radial shaft fracture were retrospectively screened for inclusion in our study. Patients with ipsilateral ulna or radius fractures, or with inadequate imaging or inadequ

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the early complications associated with the dorsal approach to the proximal radius. This approach, also called the Thompson approach, is used relatively infrequently for the treatment of forearm fractures. It is primarily reserved for proximal one-third radius fractures where a volar plate may not be placed sufficiently proximal for adequate fixation.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on forearm fractures performed at our institution. Over a period from January 2008 to May 2014 a total of 120 patients underwent fixation f

One of the points made against nailing in radius and ulna shaft fractures has been the loss of radial bow and its impact on function. The aims of the study were to assess the change in magnitude and location of the radial bow in radius and ulna shaft fractures treated with intramedullary square nails and to assess the impact of this change on functional outcome, patient reported disability and the range of motion of the forearm. We measured the magnitude of radial bow and its location in the operated extremity and compared it to the uninjured side in 32 adult patients treated with intramedulla

INTRODUCTION: A bifocal non-union of shaft of radius associated with ipsilateral non-union shaft of ulna in an adult has not been reported in the literature till date to the best of our knowledge, though few similar cases of fresh fractures have been reported. The case being reported by us is the first of its kind.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of bifocal non-union of shaft radius with non-union ipsilateral shaft of ulna in a 48-year-old right handed male along with discussion of alternative treatment options.
CONCLUSION: We describe an extremely rare and complicated non-union in which

Bone abnormalities are common in theropod dinosaur skeletons, but before now no specimen was known with more than four afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and/or forelimb. Here we describe the pathology of a specimen of the theropod dinosaur Dilophosaurus wetherilli with eight afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and forelimb. On its left side the animal has a fractured scapula and radius and large fibriscesses in the ulna and the proximal thumb phalanx. On its right side the animal has abnormal torsion of the humeral shaft, bony tumors on the radius, a truncated distal articular surface

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of Type 1 Monteggia equivalent injury with intact radio-capitellar congruity, associated with epiphyseal fracture of distal radius and distal ulna shaft in an 11-year-old boy. There are only a few cases of Monteggia or Monteggia equivalent injury with ipsilateral forearm fractures in children, and injury pattern being reported by us is not only rare but also the only case reported thus far to the best of our knowledge, Sood et al. described Type 1 equivalent with epiphyseal injuries of both radius and ulna Osada et al. also described injury pattern same as Sood e

Fractures of both the radius and ulna are usually treated with two separate incisions and rarely with one single incision. However, both methods have disadvantages. For this we describe a relatively safe single straight posterior incision for exposure of the whole shafts of both the radius and ulna with the forearm rested on a board across the chest. This procedure was used in 116 forearms in 115 patients. The incision was in a straight line from the lateral humeral epicondyle to the ulnar head. The ulna was exposed between the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle and flexor digitorum profundus muscl

The incidence of forearm shaft fractures in children has increased in recent years. They are challenging to treat and they can result in several long-lasting complications. The treatment of children's fractures needs to be individualized to their needs. Nonoperative care will be satisfactory for young, preschool children and it is primarily treatment in stable fractures of children at every age. Injury mechanism must be understood to perform appropriate closed reduction. Immobilization using a long-arm cast needs to be focused against the deforming muscle forces - in particular those that rota

The management of children's fractures has evolved as a result of better health education, changes in lifestyle, improved implant technology and the changing expectations of society. This review focuses on the changes seen in paediatric fractures, including epidemiology, the increasing problems of obesity, the mechanisms of injury, non-accidental injuries and litigation. We also examine the changes in the management of fractures at three specific sites: the supracondylar humerus, femoral shaft and forearm. There has been an increasing trend towards surgical stabilisation of these fractures. Th

Dislocation of the elbow along with shaft fractures of both bones of the ipsilateral forearm is a rare injury though elbow dislocation or fracture of the forearm bones may occur separately. Such injuries need a concentric reduction of the dislocation and an anatomical fixation of forearm bones for optimal functional outcomes. We report a case of elbow dislocation with fracture of the lateral condyle of the humerus along with fractures of shafts of the radius and ulna in a 44-year-old female. Closed reduction of the elbow and operative stabilization of all fractures were done with good clinical

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of paediatric fractures is crucial for developing preventive strategies, but when it comes to developing countries, the urban scenario has rarely been studied in the context of childhood trauma. This study aims to identify the epidemiology of paediatric injuries occurring in the largest and most populated city of Pakistan, Karachi, so that a comparison to data from the developed world can be made, and appropriate precautionary measures can be devised.
METHODS: The data from 1,514 paediatric orthopaedic patients treated at the Accident and Emergency department of J

INTRODUCTION: Diaphyseal fractures of both bones of the forearm are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Segmental radius shaft fractures are, however, less commonly seen. We hereby report two cases of segmental complex radius fracture with mid-shaft ulna fracture. Such type of cases are reported previously in children but rarely in adults.
CASE REPORT: In case-1, comminuted radius shaft fracture was fixed with square nails and ulna was fixed with Recon plate. In case-2, plating was done for radius mid-shaft, K-wiring for distal radius, and ulna was stabilized with a square nail. Detail

BACKGROUND: Plate fixation is the most commonly used technique for the treatment of shaft fractures of both forearm bones (SFBFBs). However, all fractures are difficult to treat with plate fixation because of soft tissue injuries, fracture patterns, or the patient's condition. The purpose of this study is to compare the functional results of plate fixation only and combined plate and intramedullary (IM) nail fixation in SFBFBs.
METHODS: Fifty-nine cases of SFBFBs that were surgically treated from June 2007 to July 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. In this study, 47 cases that were followed

INTRODUCTION: In this cohort study, the surgical revision concept of open compression plating and autologous bone grafting with and without additional application of BMP for treatment of aseptic ulna and/or radius shaft nonunion was evaluated. The purpose was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome, and to determine any difference in osseous healing, range of time between revision surgery and bone healing, and postoperative complications between the cohort groups.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 01/2005 and 03/2015, a prospective, randomised, controlled cohort study was performed in a

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Currently, open reduction and internal plate-screw fixation is generally accepted as the gold standard treatment of diaphyseal forearm fractures. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation by using the Locking Compression Plate (LCP) implant system of radial, ulnar or combined shaft fractures of a skeletally mature patients group treated at our institution.
METHODS: We examined 47 patients, 44 men and 3 women, mean age 35 years (range 14-74) operated for diaphyseal fract

The eponym Monteggia fracture dislocation originally referred to a fracture of the shaft of the ulna accompanied by anterior dislocation of the radial head that was described by Giovanni Battista Monteggia of Italy in 1814. Subsequently, a further classification system based on the direction of the radial head dislocation and associated fractures of the radius and ulna was proposed by Jose Luis Bado of Uruguay in 1958. This article investigates the evolution of treatment, classification, and outcomes of the Monteggia injury and sheds light on the lives and contributions of Monteggia and Bado.
