In silico workflow for validation of patient-specific 3D-printed casts in forearm fracture immobilization.

BACKGROUND: This paper aims to establish an in silico workflow for biomechanical assessment of patient-specific 3D-printed forearm casts using finite element analysis, and to apply this workflow to compare a novel computationally designed point-of-care cast with a commercially available state-of-the-art cast. METHODS: A finite element model of a human forearm was generated from CT data, incorporating bones, soft tissues, and a simulated distal radius and ulna fracture. Two cast designs were virtually applied: a commercial cast (AA_CAST) and a point-of-care cast (POC_CAST) featuring a hexagona

Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) vs. Titanium Plates for Upper Limb Fractures: A Systematic Review.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) plates have emerged as alternatives to titanium locking plates for fixation of upper-limb fractures. Advantages may include an elastic modulus closer to bone, fewer imaging artefacts, and reduced stress shielding. This systematic review synthesizes comparative clinical evidence. We analyzed data from five comparative studies (n = 210 patients; CFR-PEEK = 108, titanium = 102) provided in the dataset. Searches of PubMed and the Cochrane Library identified relevant trials. Data were extracted for demographics, interventions, functional outco

Association of Bone Mass, Falls, and Vertebral Fractures in Older Patients on Hemodialysis: The Role of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment.

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring hemodialysis (HD) disproportionately affects older adults, who face increased risks of falls and fractures due to age-related changes, renal osteodystrophy, comorbidities and dialysis-related factors. Although bone abnormalities and fall risk have often been examined separately in patients with ESRD, few studies have evaluated vertebral compression fractures (VCF) in older HD patients while concurrently assessing skeletal, functional and geriatric risk factors. The role of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in identifying multidimensio

Polyphenols in Pancreatic Cancer Management: Exploring the Roles and Mechanisms of Resveratrol and Epigallocatechin.

Emerging evidence highlights the potential of bioactive compounds, particularly polyphenols, as adjunctive therapeutic agents in the treatment of pancreatic cancer (PC), one of the most aggressive malignancies. This review focuses on epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol due to their extensively documented anticancer activity, favorable safety profiles, and their unique ability to modulate multiple signaling pathways relevant to pancreatic tumorigenesis. Among polyphenols, these two have shown superior anti-cancer activity, epigenetic regulatory effects, and synergy with standard che

Oral phosphate binders and incident osteoporotic fracture in patients on dialysis.

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has an elevated risk of osteoporotic fractures in relation to mineral and bone disorder (MBD) as well as conventional risks of osteoporosis. We investigated the association between oral phosphate binders, the mainstay of MBD treatment, and osteoporotic fracture in dialysis patients. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Health Insurance database for incident dialysis patients without a history of osteoporotic fractures. Participants were categorized into four groups based on their initial 1-year prescription profiles: calcium-based phosphate b

Trabecular bone score to assess bone microarchitecture in end-stage renal disease patients.

RATIONALE: This study evaluates TBS for estimating bone microarchitecture in ESRD patients using HR-pQCT as the reference technique. MAIN RESULTS: TBS correlates significantly with vBMD and bone microarchitecture, unlike aBMD. SIGNIFICANCE: TBS may complement bone health assessment in ESRD patients by offering additional information alongside aBMD. PURPOSE: Given the high fracture risk, non-invasive techniques for assessing bone fragility in chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain important. Trabecular bone score (TBS) may provide additional information that could help guide treatment and follo

Epidemiologic Patterns of Musculoskeletal Disorders by Body Region Across 1.2 Million Orthopedic Visits: A 15-Year Experience From a Middle-Income Country.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal problems occupy an important place among outpatient clinical applications. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), has facilitated the understanding of disease diagnoses in a common language worldwide and the processing of data. However, studies examining all orthopedic diagnoses in a large population are limited. In this study, we analyzed over 1.2 million ICD-10-coded orthopedic visits over 15 years in a secondary-level hospital located in a low-income, working-class district of Türkiye, provid

Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors vs Incretin-Based Drugs and Risk of Fractures for Type 2 Diabetes.

IMPORTANCE: Postmenopausal individuals with type 2 diabetes are susceptible to fractures due to the interaction of elevated blood glucose levels and a deficiency of the hormone estrogen. Despite continued concerns of fracture risks associated with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), existing evidence in this high-risk population is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of fractures associated with SGLT2i vs incretin-based drugs of dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4i) and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1RA), separately, in postmenopausal individuals with ty
