The epidemiology of non-traffic-related, pedestrian injuries in the winter sports resort of Arosa (Switzerland) between 1968 and 1995 (beginning december to end april) was studied. A total of 2813 patients (1140 male and 1673 female patients) with 3010 injuries was surveyed in a general practice. The purpose of the present study was to determine the predictive ability of a single bone mineral density (BMD) measurement on a 25-year perspective. A group of 1076 women (age 20-78 years) had had their forearm BMD measured from 1970 to 1975. The authors recall the place of apposed plate fixation of fractures of the lower end of the radius, most of which are anterior. The ideal indication is the simple fracture by articular or supra-articular, compression-flexion. The importance of modelling and positioning of the plate is emphasised. The use of other types of fixation for composite systems is possible in complex fractures. Anatomical reconstruction must be obtained to ensure a satisfactory functional result.

Eighty-four out of 100 enrolled female patients affected by osteoporosis completed a double-blind, randomized trial, using ipriflavone (IP) in a dose of 3 x 200 mg/day (41 patients) or placebo (P)(43 patients). Twenty-seven patients with elbow joint dislocation were reviewed and treated between 1979 and 1983. For statistical reasons a sample of 27 elbows of healthy adults matched on age and sex were also roentgenographed. A series of 55 distal radial fractures with anterior displacement have been fixed by an anterior plate. Fifty-nine consecutive patients (19 men, 40 women, mean age 60.8 [27-80] years) with primary osteoporosis were studied to see if there was any significant gain in bone mass after treatment with salmon calcitonin. The insertion of two elastic spring-pins in the marrow cavity of the radius gives automatically setting of the radius distal extremity's fracture. The present authors have had encouraging results in the treatment of painful pseudarthrosis of the carpal scaphoid bone using wedge osteotomy on the lower end of the radius. After the operation, patients experienced restoration of joint movement, less painful or pain-free joints, and, in a few cases, sound union of the established pseudarthrosis of the carpal scaphoid bone. Osteotomy is a simple procedure of short duration and is without complications. In addition, in cases of failure, osteotomy does not exclude other forms of therapy.
