Journal of plastic, reconstructive & aesthetic surgery : JPRAS2024eng
BACKGROUND: Thickened nerve cross-sectional areas (CSA) have been investigated in compressive neuropathy, but the longitudinal extent of nerve swelling has yet to be evaluated. We did a volumetric assessment of the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) with three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modeling and investigated this relationship with clinical and electrodiagnostic parameters.
METHODS: We compared 40 CuTS patient elbow MRIs to 46 patient elbow MRIs with lateral elbow epicondylitis as controls. The ulnar nerve was modeled with Mimics software and was assessed

Ulnar nerve release is often performed under general anaesthesia. Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) is a new anaesthetic method increasingly used by hand surgeons in an outpatient setting. It has advantages such as the possibility to shift surgical interventions out of the regular surgical theatre settings into an outpatient clinical setting, no risk of complications or side effects resulting from regional and general anesthesia and decreased costs. The use of WALANT has not been investigated extensively in elbow surgery. This study aims to evaluate clinical outcomes after ul

Subcutaneous anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve is a common surgical treatment for cubital tunnel syndrome. However, there are surgical failures associated with the new compressive sites at the edge of flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) and resubluxation posterior to the medial epicondyle of the transposed nerve. To reduce the muscle volume at the edge of FCU, we approach the ulnar nerve by dividing the muscle belly of the FCU humeral heads. This procedure can reduce repeated traction forces on the transposed nerve at the edge of the FCU. To keep the transposed ulnar nerve anteriorly, we use a

Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is the second most common peripheral neuropathy in the upper limb. It occurs due to ulnar nerve compression within the fibro-osseous cubital tunnel at the elbow joint. Although CuTS is typically diagnosed clinically and with electrodiagnostic studies, the importance of imaging in evaluating the condition is growing. Knowing the typical imaging findings of ulnar nerve entrapment is necessary for precise diagnosis and proper treatment. In this article, we focus on the clinical features, workup and complex imaging of the "anatomic" cubital tunnel and relevant pathol

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and the clinical classification of cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). Ten patients with CuTS (7 men and 3 women; mean age: 52.7 years) and 5 patients without ulnar neuropathy (2 men and 3 women; mean age: 38.0 years) were enrolled in this retrospective study. Fifteen patients were clinically classified into three groups: "Normal", "1 and 2A", and "2B and 3" by an orthopedic surgeon using the modified McGowan stages. DTI was acquired using a 3.0-T MRI. Fractional anisotropy (FA) of the ulnar nerve w

Fastpitch softball is a popular women's sport, and athletes, particularly pitchers, are at high risk for overuse injury. Softball-related injury rates are low; however, the prevalence of overuse injuries is high. Injuries at the high school and collegiate levels occur early in the season, and approximately 50% of shoulder and elbow injuries in softball are attributable to overuse. Survey research showed 77% of high school pitchers pitch with pain, and 73% of collegiate pitchers reported an overuse injury in the previous season. Modifiable and non-modifiable intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common compressive neuropathy in the upper extremity and is commonly evaluated with electrodiagnostic studies (EDS). Ultrasound (US) has emerged as a potentially more efficient alternative to EDS. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether measurements of the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the ulnar nerve at the elbow correlate with EDS results.
METHODS: This study was a prospective analysis of patients who presented with signs and symptoms consistent of cubital tunnel syndrome, who received USs of the ulnar nerve at the elbow and ne

Entrapment neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, the so-called cubital tunnel syndrome, is the second most frequent focal mononeuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome in adults. Currently, there is a pressing need to identify cost-effective biomarkers and procedures capable of accurately detecting alterations in ulnar nerve structural and functional integrity. Established electrophysiological techniques, such as motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, along with needle electromyography of specific muscles, represent the gold standard for ulnar nerve electrodiagnosis. Concurrently, the

INTRODUCTION: Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is characterized by the compression of the ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel and can cause restrictions to the activities of daily living. Traditional treatment includes conservative methods and, in more severe cases, different types of surgery. In these cases, common side effects of surgery may limit the clinical success. A new alternative could be a minimally invasive Ultrasound-guided (US-guided) thread release of cubital tunnel retinaculum also known as the Osborne's ligament. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-gu

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is a prevalent compressive neuropathy addressed through various treatments, including the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) supercharge end-to-side (SETS) transfer for advanced CuTS. Decision to add AIN-SETS is based on various indicators and protocols, but deciding on the appropriate method for borderline cases can be challenging. Therefore, this study aims to non-invasively examine the cubital tunnel anatomy of patients using CT scans and compare the findings with existing indicators and measurements, to determine if they can serve as supplementary

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common nerve entrapment, and understanding the anatomy is crucial for the success of the nerve release. During ulnar nerve release for cubital tunnel syndrome, a motor branch is frequently encountered crossing anteriorly over the ulnar nerve from its medial/ulnar side proximally to the lateral/radial side distally. Little has been noted about this crossing branch in the literature. In this anatomic study, we sought to characterize this branch further and discuss its potential significance in cubital tunnel release.
METHODS:

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic idiopathic ulnar nerve instability (IUNI) in the elbow is an uncommon condition characterized by symptoms of ulnar neuritis resulting from frictional injury to the ulnar nerve from repetitive subluxation out of the cubital tunnel. This study reports the 1-year clinical outcomes after treatment of IUNI with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case study of five patients. Ulnar nerve instability was diagnosed clinically based on the presence of ulnar neuritis symptoms in combination with a positive "ulnar nerve push past" test. Ele

BACKGROUND: Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow is a common neurological entrapment neuropathy. Previous research has shown that surgical treatment can be highly successful. Only a few studies have reported on long-term outcome after surgery. In this study, we report on the long-term follow-up after surgery for ulnar nerve compression at the elbow.
METHODS: We performed a long-term follow-up study, more than 20 years after surgery, for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. We also compared 2 methods: simple decompression and anterior subcutaneous transposition. A short outcome questionnaire, adapted

Injury to the elbow is very common in the throwing athlete and can potentially lead to long absences from play and, in the most severe scenarios, medical retirement. The throwing motion is a highly complex series of movements through the entire kinetic chain that results in very high angular velocities and valgus forces at the elbow joint. The repetitive nature of overhead throwing in combination with the high levels of accumulated force at the elbow puts both pediatric and adult athletes at risk of both acute and chronic overuse injuries of the elbow. This review provides an update on common

BACKGROUND: The role of the anconeus epitrochlearis (AE) in cubital tunnel syndrome, either as protector or potential compressor of the ulnar nerve, as well as its prevalence in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients is still unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of the AE in a large cohort using 3-dimensional imaging and to investigate any association of the AE with preoperative or postoperative features of patients undergoing cubital tunnel surgery.
METHODS: From a database of 1240 elbow magnetic resonance imagings, all patients with an AE were retrospectively screened for

INTRODUCTION: Medially routed biceps-to-triceps tendon transfer for elbow extension reconstruction in spinal cord injury (SCI) has proven to be a reliable procedure. This technique classically places the tendon transfer superficial to a paralyzed ulnar nerve, with a theoretical risk of compression neuropathy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male with a C5 American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade B SCI who underwent bilateral biceps-to-triceps tendon transfers presented with new-onset paresthesias in the ring and small fingers 10.5 years following initial reconstructive
