[Bed bugs, lice and fleas-an up-to-date overview of diagnosis, treatment and prevention].

Despite high standards of hygiene, ectoparasites remain a significant issue in dermatology. Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) have become significantly more prevalent worldwide over the past two decades, whilst head lice infestation (Pediculus humanus capitis) remains one of the most common parasitic infections in children. Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) are predominantly transmitted sexually. Body lice (Pediculus humanus corporis) are rare in Central Europe, but remain of infectious disease significance as vectors of Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana and Borrelia recurrentis. Flea bites in hum

Scalp infestation by Pthirus pubis in a 91-year-old woman: A rare cause of chronic scalp pruritus.

Pthirus pubis is an ectoparasite that typically infests pubic hair and is primarily transmitted through close sexual contact. Although extragenital involvement may occur, scalp infestation remains exceptionally uncommon. We report the case of a 91-year-old woman who presented with a two-month history of persistent scalp pruritus that failed to respond to oral terbinafine and ketoconazole shampoo. Dermatological examination revealed numerous adult lice and nits attached to scalp hairs, with additional involvement of the eyelashes, eyebrows, and pubic region. Microscopic examination confirmed Pt

Epidemiological and molecular insights into human lice (Anoplura: Pediculidae) in France: genetic diversity and DNA barcoding.

Human lice are hematophagous ectoparasites of worldwide distribution and public health concern. Despite their medical importance, the genetic diversity of these ectoparasites remains poorly documented, with only one prior study conducted in France. In this study, we investigated the distribution and genetic diversity of human louse populations collected from patients referred to Avicenne Hospital, northern Paris, between 2019 and 2023. A total of 209 specimens, one per patient, were examined: 186 head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis), 11 body lice (Pediculus h. corporis), and 12 pubic lice (Pt

High prevalence of pediculosis, associated factors, and exploratory detection of the knockdown resistance mutations in head lice from school settings in Chonburi Province, eastern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Head louse infestation (Pediculosis humanus capitis) remains a common public health problem among school-aged children. While reduced efficacy of pediculicides has been increasingly reported, information linking prevalence, treatment-related factors, and molecular detection of resistance-associated kdr mutations in eastern Thailand remain limited. This study investigated the prevalence of pediculosis and exploratory epidemiological associations among schoolchildren in Chonburi Province, eastern Thailand, together with exploratory molecular characterization of resistance-associated

Efficacy of afoxolaner or a combination of afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime against fleas, ticks, lice and/or intestinal nematodes in dogs naturally infested in two urban areas in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Infestations with fleas, ticks and intestinal nematodes are commonly identified in domestic dogs and have significant veterinary and public health importances. The study described in this manuscript was conducted to verify the natural parasitism of domestic dogs in two Brazilian regions, and to confirm the efficacy of the isoxazoline afoxolaner, formulated alone (NexGard®) or in combination with the macrocyclic lactone milbemycin oxime (NexGard Spectra®), for the control of fleas and ticks, and to confirm the efficacy of the afoxolaner/milbemycin oxime (MO) combination for the cont

Objective Return-to-Sport (RTS) Decision Frameworks for Adolescent Shoulder and Elbow Injuries: Tests, Thresholds and Exercise Targets.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent shoulder and elbow injuries are increasing due to sports specialization and year-round training, yet return-to-sport decisions typically rely on adult-derived heuristics that fail to address the unique physiology, growth plate vulnerability, and recovery needs of developing athletes aged 10-19 years. OBJECTIVE: This review proposes a novel, objective three-pillar RTS framework integrating: (1) foundational tissue capacity, (2) dynamic movement quality and neuromuscular control, and (3) sport-specific load tolerance. We synthesize current evidence to establish provisiona

Scabies and other ectoparasitoses.

Ectoparasitoses are caused by organisms that parasitize their host's skin. They affect a considerable proportion of the global population, with a disproportionately greater burden in disadvantaged individuals and communities, although any human is susceptible. They are more prevalent in tropical climates. They can have a major impact on infected individuals' quality of life and on affected populations, and they can result in severe complications. Despite their contribution to the global burden of disease, ectoparasitoses remain largely neglected. Making their characteristics visible and unders

Morphological and molecular evidence of Linognathus vituli infestation in yaks from Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China.

Louse infestations pose a serious threat to yak production, affecting animal health and causing substantial economic losses. However, until now there has been limited information available regarding yak lice infestations. Herein, we collected lice samples from Ganzi Tibetan yaks and amplified the nuclear small subunit ribosomal 18S and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) genes for evolutionary and phylogenetic analyses. Stereoscopic and scanning electron microscope observations showed high morphological similarity between the yak lice and the cattle sucking louse Linognathus vi

Infestation patterns and ecological distribution of fleas and sucking lice on Rattus tanezumi in southwest China: Evidence from a long-term multi-provincial study (2000-2024).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The oriental house rat (Rattus tanezumi) is a dominant commensal rodent in southwest China and an important reservoir host for multiple zoonotic pathogens. Fleas and sucking lice that parasitize this species play a critical role in the maintenance and transmission of flea-borne and louse-associated diseases. However, long-term, large-scale evidence on the infestation patterns, ecological distribution, and host-parasite relationships of these ectoparasites remains limited. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the infestation status, community structure, and ecolo

Alternative hypotheses to explain the relationship between infestation intensity and sex ratio of ricinid lice (Psocodea: Phthiraptera: Ricinidae) infesting hummingbirds (Apodiformes: Trochilidae).

Ricinid lice are exceptionally large-bodied relative to their hosts and tend to form small infrapopulations. They exhibit a more pronounced female bias (predominance of females) than most other lice. Sex ratios (SRs; the proportions of males) of 10 hummingbird-ricinid species pairs collected from South and North America were examined. There was a significant positive relationship between infrapopulation size and SR in 5 cases, and similar non-significant tendencies in 4 cases. Two formerly constructed hypotheses had been considered to explain this relationship. First, Wolbachia infections may

Vaccination modality and injection site influence the immune response and protection against sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis infestation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations represent a challenge to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) aquaculture. We evaluated recombinant peroxinectin-like proteins (LsPxtl-1 and LsPxtl-2) and whole sea lice (WSL) crude proteins as vaccine antigens, administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) or via a combination of i.p./subcutaneous fin-base injection (IP-F). Fish were immunized, boosted, smoltified, and challenged with copepodites, and systemic (plasma) and mucosal (mucus) antibody responses were assessed alongside lice burden. LsPxtl-1 (p < 0.05) reduced lice counts compared to PBS control

The effect of emamectin benzoate on mortality, growth and metabolism of the polychaete Capitella sp.

Emamectin benzoate (EMB) is used as an in-feed antiparasitic agent to mitigate sea lice infestations in salmonid aquaculture, potentially entering the marine environment through uneaten feed pellets and feces. The polychaete Capitella sp. is a prevalent species in the benthic environments beneath salmon farms, being both an efficient fish-feces converter due to their deposit-feeding behavior and as susceptible non-target species to EMB exposure. However, the impact of EMB on this non-target species remains unclear. To assess the potential effects of EMB on Capitella sp., bioassays were conduct

Ectoparasite Infestations in Wild Mammals from the Lake Van Basin, Eastern Türkiye, with Notes on New Host Records.

Ectoparasites cause skin lesions, anemia, and mortality in wild animals and act as vectors of zoonotic pathogens. This study reports ectoparasites detected during an opportunistic survey on wild mammals admitted to the Van Yuzuncu Yil University Wildlife Protection and Rehabilitation Center in eastern Türkiye during 2024-2025. Due to the opportunistic nature of sampling, the findings primarily reflect parasite burdens in injured or debilitated individuals and may not be representative of healthy free-ranging populations. Of the 28 animals examined, 20 (71.4%) were infested. A total of 449 ecto

Assessment of Salinity Tolerance in Lepeophtheirus salmonis Following Five Generations of Freshwater Treatment Selection.

Non-medicinal approaches for controlling sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations, such as freshwater (FW) treatments, have been increasingly implemented to support more sustainable parasite control in aquaculture. This study evaluated the efficacy of FW treatment against sea lice under controlled experimental conditions and assessed the potential development of resistance across multiple generations. Sea lice populations were maintained over five consecutive generations, and FW efficacy was evaluated by quantifying lice abundance on Atlantic salmon before and after treatment. Resistanc

Ectoparasite survey of schoolchildren in the Republic of Guinea.

Ectoparasitoses, caused by infestations of highly contagious and ubiquitous parasites, include Pediculus humanus capitis (the head louse) and human scabies. These diseases affect many school-age children and are a major public health problem in low-income countries such as the Republic of Guinea. These parasites, such as lice, are known to be potential disease vectors. Given the lack of data on these conditions in Guinea, we conducted a nationwide epidemiological study to assess their prevalence in schools. In March 2023, 81 head lice were collected from 18 schoolgirls in the regions of Boké a

Management of plica polonica in the wake of refractory head lice infestation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis remains widespread globally, and the emergence of resistance genes continues to impede eradication efforts. This case of plica polonica offers insight into the complexity and challenges of pediculosis in endemic settings where resistant lice are present. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 13-year-old girl from a suburban area of Bangkok with long-standing pediculosis that progressed to plica polonica due to prolonged lack of intervention. Molecular analysis of the sampled lice demonstrated a 100% homozygous knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation. Several o
