Prevalence and associated factors of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) among schoolchildren in Mérida (Yucatán) and Monterrey (Nuevo León), Mexico.

Pediculosis capitis is a common parasitic infestation in school settings and can disrupt wellbeing and school attendance. Despite its public-health relevance, epidemiological data describing Pediculosis capitis prevalence and associated factors in Mexico remain limited at the city level. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Pediculosis capitis and identify associated factors among schoolchildren from Monterrey and Mérida, Mexico. Aggregated data from a school-based cross-sectional survey were analyzed. Infestation status was determined through standardized individual scalp inspection

Association of Head Lice Infestation with Staphylococcal Dysbiosis: Molecular Identification of Pediculus capitis and Staphylococcal Profiling in School Children.

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestations are a widespread health problem among school-aged children globally. Nevertheless, the importance of lice as initiators of scalp microbiome changes and as causes of secondary bacterial superinfections remains poorly understood. The paper aims to examine the PCR-based identification of head lice and to assess the epidemiological relationship between head lice infestation and scalp colonization by Staphylococcus species. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 primary school children (50 infested and 50 controls) aged between 5 and 12

Pediculosis capitis: an overlooked cause of scalp itch in Nigerian women and the role of trichoscopy in diagnosis.

Pediculosis capitis, caused by human head lice, is a common yet frequently overlooked cause of scalp pruritus. While it is historically uncommon in adults, recent reports indicate a rising incidence, particularly among adult women. This case series highlights the diagnostic challenges of pediculosis capitis infestation in adult women from Southeastern Nigeria, where persistent scalp itch is often misdiagnosed and treated as seborrhoeic dermatitis, leading to delayed or inappropriate management. Four women aged 20-41 years with persistent scalp pruritus were initially misdiagnosed as having seb

Phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 7-year-old girl: a case report.

This case report presents a rare instance of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 7-year-old female patient. The patient complained of bilateral eyelid pruritus and erythema lasting for 3 weeks. Slit-lamp examination revealed adult lice and nits adhering to the palpebral margins, and microscopic assessment confirmed the diagnosis of Pthirus pubis infestation. Following multiple treatment attempts, all lice and nits were successfully eliminated. With the application of tobramycin eye ointment, the patient achieved full recovery. Phthiriasis palpebrarum is an uncommon condition, especially in pediatric

Gray areas: an investigation of ectoparasite abundance and distribution and tick-borne pathogens in peridomestic eastern gray squirrels Rodentia: Sciuridae (Sciurus carolinensis).

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin) is a widely distributed rodent in North America, including introduced populations in western regions. Despite being widespread in urban and suburban ecosystems, their role as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens has been understudied compared to other wildlife hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of ectoparasites and tick-borne pathogens in eastern gray squirrels across suburban habitats in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Over 2 yr, squirrels were trapped across 5 sites and examined for ectoparasites. Ticks were the mo

Diversity of obligate ectoparasites and parasitism patterns in wild birds of the Balearic Islands: new chewing lice records for Spain.

Ectoparasites are commonly found on wild birds and might play an important role as vectors of pathogens. The Balearic Islands archipelago (Spain) is an ecological hotspot for wild birds due to its geographical location and habitat diversity. Although the avian fauna of the archipelago is well studied, little information is available regarding the ectoparasites infesting its wild bird populations. This study aimed to identify the diversity of ectoparasites (chewing lice, louse flies and ticks) and feather mites on wild birds in several locations on Menorca Island, as well as to assess the preva

The ectoparasites and gastrointestinal helminths associated with Smith's bush squirrel (Paraxerus cepapi) in South Africa.

Paraxerus cepapi is an arboreal tree squirrel that occurs in the Savanna biome of Africa, and information on its parasite diversity is limited and mostly qualitative. The aim of the study was to record the diversity and abundance of ecto- and helminth parasites associated with P. cepapi across its distribution in South Africa. P. cepapi individuals (n = 94) were opportunistically obtained from eight localities during 2020 to 2024. In total, 21 parasite species (19 ectoparasites and two nematodes) and one tick species group were identified. This included lice, ticks, fleas, a mesostigmatic mite

Pediculosis capitis: a hidden threat in tropical regions.

Pediculosis capitis, caused by Pediculus humanus var. capitis, is a common ectoparasitic infestation primarily affecting school-aged children worldwide. It is transmitted through direct head-to-head contact and occasionally via fomites. Although it is not a vector for diseases, it causes significant psychosocial and economic burdens, including scalp itching, parental anxiety, absenteeism and social stigma. The head louse life cycle includes egg, nymph and adult stages, with the entire cycle completed in 21-30 days. Diagnosis is based on identifying live lice or viable eggs, often aided by wet

Successful Treatment of Trichodectes canis in a Dog with a 1-Month Formulation of Fluralaner.

An 11 yr old, 8.16 kg, spayed female Lhasa apso with unresolved pruritus was presented to the dermatology service. On physical examination, infestation of biting lice (Trichodectes canis) was discovered. The dog was treated with one dose of 100 mg fluralaner and re-evaluated at 2 and 4 wk following administration. After 2 wk, all adult lice were eliminated; however, nits were still present. After 4 wk, all clinical signs and all evidence of lice infestation were resolved. This case indicates that fluralaner is an effective treatment for biting lice, even at the lower dosage used in the 1 mo fo

Detection and Genetic Diversity of Heritable Bacterial Symbionts in Human Lice Based on 16S-rRNA Gene.

Human lice are obligate bloodsucking ectoparasites harbouring endosymbiotic bacteria essential for their survival. Despite the medical significance of human lice, their endosymbionts remain understudied, and knowledge about their species identity, prevalence and genetic diversity is largely limited. Head, body and pubic louse specimens' collection from infested patients of various origins between 2019 and 2023 enabled molecular screening for distribution and genetic diversity of bacterial endosymbionts through conventional PCR targeting two fragments of 16S-rRNA. A total of 209 louse specimens

First report of phoresy on snipe flies (Diptera: Rhagionidae): the chewing louse Damalinia meyeri (Psocodea: Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) on Symphoromyia immaculata.

Phoresy, the passive transport of an organism by another, is a well-documented strategy among flightless arthropods, particularly in species that exploit patchily distributed resources. While phoresy among parasitic lice has been frequently recorded between avian-associated ischnoceran species riding on louse flies, reports of phoretic lice parasitic on mammals are exceedingly rare. Here, we report a case of phoresy of the chewing louse Damalinia (Cervicola) meyeri (Taschenberg) hitchhiking attached to the legs of the snipe fly Symphoromyia immaculata (Diptera: Ragionidae) (Meigen), collected

Parasites perform poorly at high host densities: an experimental test in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

The link between host density and parasite population size is well-established. However, while high host density facilitates parasite transmission, it may negatively impact parasites through more intense competition and/or more intense host immune defence. We assessed the performance of individually tagged female salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), an ectoparasite of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), under experimental low and high host density conditions, the latter mimicking salmon aquaculture conditions. Lice at high density exhibit greater pre-reproductive mortality, reduced growth, delaye

First record of 3 chewing louse species from the Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana) in Korea: Insights into conservation of co-associated species.

The Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe, 1873) is an endangered species, with active restoration efforts ongoing in Korea. Despite the ecological importance of host-specific parasites, such as chewing lice (Phthiraptera), information on the chewing lice fauna associated with C. boyciana in Korea remains unclear. Previous records of 2 chewing louse species from the host have been questioned due to potential misidentification. To clarify the chewing lice fauna of the host, we conducted a survey of captive C. boyciana at Yesan Oriental Stork Park, Korea, in October 2022. Morphological identi

Mitochondrial DNA phylogeography of a species-specific sucking louse, Johnsonpthirus heliosciuri, act as a proxy to provide insights into the population connectivity of its host, smith's bush squirrels, Paraxerus cepapi.

Due to co-evolution, permanent species-specific lice and their hosts often exhibit congruent phylogenetic patterns, and to a lesser extent also congruent phylogeographic structures. However, because ectoparasites generally have smaller effective population sizes (due to their aggregated distribution), and they have a faster evolutionary rate (generation time effect), their phylogeographic structures are often more pronounced. This study investigates the phylogeographic structure of a squirrel Paraxerus cepapi and one of its louse species, Johnsonpthirus heliosciuri, sampled from eight localiti

Genetic survey of Ivermectin-resistance markers in head lice from Jazan, Saudi Arabia.

Insecticide resistance in head lice is a widespread problem and has been intensively studied in recent years. Whereas numerous investigations have examined pyrethroid resistance, ivermectin (IVM) resistance has not been assessed in Saudi Arabia and has been addressed in few studies worldwide. IVM is the second most commonly used drug to treat head-louse infestations, and resistance to it is associated with five mutations in the glutamate-gated chloride channel (GluCl) gene. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of GluCl mutations in the Jazan region. Sanger sequencing and PCR-restriction

Delousing performance of ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) and lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus): seasonal consistency and the challenge of cryptic lice for lumpfish.

BACKGROUND: Cleaner fish play a crucial role in controlling caligid sea lice in Atlantic salmon aquaculture across the North Atlantic. However, their delousing performance varies due to multiple factors, including water temperature and cleaner fish size. Anecdotal reports of less-pigmented sea lice have raised concerns that these variants may emerge as a response to cleaner fish selection pressure. Given the high adaptation potential of sea lice and their resistance to chemical treatments, these colour variants could challenge cleaner fish delousing strategies. A series of tank experiments coh

Prevalence and Intensity of Parasitic Insects on Puerto Rican Birds.

Birds are host to four orders of parasitic insects: flies (Diptera), lice (Psocodea: Phthiraptera), true bugs (Hemiptera), and fleas (Siphonaptera). These parasites can lower host fitness and thus require birds to invest in defenses to minimize fitness losses. In Puerto Rico, virulent parasites, such as Philornis spp. flies, threaten endangered species and subspecies of birds. Philornis larvae are hematophagous and burrow beneath the skin of both nestling and adult birds. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the prevalence and intensity of subcutaneous Philornis flies of adult birds in Pue
