Infestation rate of bovid short nose lice (Haematopinus tuberculatus) among different breeds of buffaloes and associated risk factors in rural farming of Pakistan.

A short-nosed louse, Haematopinus tuberculatus, infestation among different breeds of buffaloes in rural farming systems poses a potential threat to animals' health and milk production. A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the infestation rate of H. tuberculatus across different breeds of buffaloes and to identify potential associated risk factors by examining 1200 animals during surveys of 150 rural farms in Sialkot, Pakistan. Among 1200 sampled animals, a high overall infestation rate of 78.8% was observed. The Kundhi breed exhibited the highest infestation rate (∼85%), followed

Successful resolution of natural Werneckiella equi infestation in two horses using pour-on Fipronil: A clinical observation.

Werneckiella equi is an ectoparasite of equids, and control can be challenging because of the limited availability of licensed products. This case report describes the clinical observation of 1% fipronil pour-on against W. equi infestation in horses admitted to a veterinary hospital. Two horses were treated and observed between 2022 and 2023. Both exhibited pruritus, especially in the head, withers, and croup regions, and were diagnosed with severe W. equi infestation. The treatment consisted of a single topical application of 1% fipronil pour-on (1 mg/kg). Parasite reduction was assessed by c

ON THE IDENTITY OF ESTHIOPTERUM TATAUPA CARRIKER, 1936 (PSOCODEA: PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA): A FURNARIID LOUSE SPECIES.

Reexamination of the holotype of the louse species Esthiopterum tataupa Carriker, 1936 demonstrated that the species belongs to the genus Furnariphilus Price and Clayton, 1995 and is conspecific with Furnariphilus parkeri Price and Clayton, 1995. The Tataupa tinamou Crypturellus t. tataupa (Temminck, 1815), originally listed as the type host of this species, is not the true host. This association likely resulted from contamination during Carriker's 1934 Bolivian collections, when a furnariid (Sclerurus albigularis albicollis Carriker, 1935) was obtained at the same locality. The present study

Assessment of farmers' knowledge, attitude, practices (KAP) and effectiveness of anti-parasitic drug against buffalo louse, Haematopinus tuberculatus.

Lice infestations in water buffaloes can lead to decreased weight gain, reduced milk production and damage to the animals' skin and hair. In addition to causing skin irritation, anorexia, restlessness and, in severe cases, anaemia, lice infestations can spread infectious diseases, including anaplasmosis. In this study, 1000 buffaloes were examined for louse infestation, and 543 buffaloes tested positive for Haematopinus tuberculatus, showing a 54.30% overall prevalence. The face-to-face interviews of 125 respondents showed positive attitudes of 85.60% respondents towards lice control and 64.8%

Investigation of a novel assay for the proteomic screening of the secretory and excretory products of individual salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

Secretions are central to the ability of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis to parasitize salmonid hosts by promoting immunomodulation and feeding. Previous characterizations of secretory and excretory products (SEPs) have relied on pooled individuals, preventing assessment of inter-individual variation and responses to host-derived cues. A novel SEP collection method was developed to obtain samples from individual adult female L. salmonis, enabling evaluation of secretory profiles following exposure to conditioned seawater from a susceptible host, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), or a res

Molecular detection of the kdr T917I mutation in head lice (psocodea: pediculidae) from Malaysia and its increasing frequency over a decade.

Pediculosis capitis remains a common ectoparasitic infestation in Malaysia, particularly among children in overcrowded and resource-limited settings. Permethrin-based pediculicides continue to be widely used; however, global reports of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene raise concerns regarding reduced treatment efficacy. Despite extensive epidemiological data on infestation by head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer) in Malaysia, the molecular kdr status of local populations has not previously been examined. This study provides a temporal mo

Sea Lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) Harbour Putative Fish Pathogens: Insights From Illumina and Nanopore Sequencing.

Ectoparasites that penetrate host skin can act as biological or mechanical vectors for pathogens and, in some cases, serve as reservoirs. Crustacean ectoparasites of fish are potential vectors of pathogens, which is especially relevant for obligate pathogens (e.g., Aeromonas salmonicida) with limited seawater survival. Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), affecting Atlantic salmon, cause dermal damage and can facilitate secondary infections, resulting in economic losses. While the physical impact of sea lice is well known, their role in pathogen transmission is less clear. The gut bacterial mic

Stigma, Perceptions, and Parental Responses to Children's Head Lice Infestation in Greece.

BACKGROUND: Head lice remain a frequent concern in schools, with social stigma and misconceptions often influencing parental attitudes more than medical realities. Understanding these psychosocial dimensions is essential for designing effective school health strategies. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 227 parents of preschool and primary school children across 13 regions in Greece. A structured 20-item questionnaire was used. Exploratory factor analysis identified underlying attitudinal factors, while correlations and latent profile analysis explored distinct psyc

Endemic Hippobosca equina (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) Louse Fly Infestation of Cattle During Summer Grazing in the Alps of Austria.

PURPOSE: Although Hippobosca equina is considered widespread in the Palearctic region, it appears to have been a rare louse fly species in most parts of central Europe for decades, currently occurring in larger numbers only in a few geographical locations and rarely parasitizing livestock. This paper reports on the monitoring of cattle infested with H. equina during summer grazing in the Salzburg Alps, Austria. METHODS: During two consecutive grazing seasons, each lasting from about mid-May to mid-September, cattle were inspected in intervals of approximately two to three weeks to estimate pre

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to traditional and conventional ectoparasite control in domestic ruminants: a cross-sectional survey conducted in Hawassa City, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ruminant livestock is an integral component of agricultural production in Ethiopia. However, productivity is constrained by ectoparasites such as ticks, lice, fleas, and mites, which cause economic losses and transmit pathogens. In this study, traditional methods refer to ethnoveterinary remedies based on indigenous knowledge, whereas conventional methods refer to commercially manufactured ectoparasiticides. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding traditional and conventional ectoparasite control methods in domestic rumin

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Phylogenetic Characterization of Pediculus humanus capitis Among Primary Schoolchildren in Algeria.

INTRODUCTION: Pediculus humanus capitis is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite that causes scalp pruritus, particularly among children in low- and middle-income countries. Transmission occurs mainly through direct head-to-head contact, and various risk factors have been implicated in increasing susceptibility to infestation. Nevertheless, epidemiological and molecular data on head lice infestation in Algeria remain limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological study aimed to estimate the prevalence of pediculosis capitis and to identify associated risk factors among Algerian pr

Ectoparasite management in extensively grazed sheep and cattle in New Zealand: Current strategies and future innovations.

Ectoparasites can negatively affect animal health and welfare and incur financial cost to farmers due to losses in animal productivity and performance, and the cost of chemicals and labour used to prevent and/or treat infestations. Therefore, effective management and control are needed to ensure good animal health, welfare and performance. A range of tools are currently available to manage ectoparasites including insecticides, genetics and integrated management strategies. However, emerging challenges such as climate change and chemical resistance are likely to influence how we manage ectopara

Redescription of the genus Turnicola Clay & Meinertzhagen, 1938 (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) and its type species.

The genus Turnicola Clay & Meinertzhagen, 1938a is redescribed and illustrated in detail for the first time, together with specimens here regarded as the type species of this genus, Lipeurus angustissimus Giebel, 1866. As the type series of this species has been lost, we here designate a neotype for L. angustissimus from specimens collected from the type host in Guangdong, China. Specimens from two different host species have the same COI genotype, indicating that Turnicola angustissimus is more widely distributed than previously thought. Differences in the louse prevalences between the two ho

Peribacillus suis sp. nov. Isolated From the Pig Louse Haematopinus suis Reveals Unexpected Pathogenic Potential in a Traditionally Benign Genus.

The pig sucking louse Haematopinus suis is a major swine ectoparasite and vector of pathogens, yet its microbiome remains understudied. Here, we described the isolation of a previously unrecognized bacterial strain, P8-9T, from the intestinal tract of H. suis. A comprehensive polyphasic analysis, including phenotypic characterization, phylogenomics, and whole-genome comparisons, placed this isolate within Peribacillus. Genome-based metrics confirmed its novelty, with average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values (<80% and <27%, respectively) falling far below accepted sp
