The parasitic fauna of the Chiloe wigeon Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae) from Ñuble region, Chile.

The Chiloe wigeon, Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae), is a native duck distributed mainly in Chile and Argentina. Although it is a common species in the Neotropical realm, studies on its parasitic fauna remain limited. This study aimed to gather additional data on host-parasite associations in M. sibilatrix. Thus, 18 birds from Ñuble region, central Chile, were subjected to parasitic examination. Ectoparasites and endoparasites obtained were stored in 70 % and 80 % ethanol, respectively. A total of 787 parasite individuals were isolated; all birds were parasitized by at least one para

Influence of Vibrio anguillarum culture conditions on the efficacy of bacterin-based vaccines in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus).

Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) is used as cleaner fish to control sea lice infestations in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms across the North Atlantic. Vibrio anguillarum, the causative agent of vibriosis, is a recurrent bacterial pathogen affecting lumpfish. Bacterin-based vaccines are frequently used to control vibriosis in finfish, but their efficacy is not always consistent. Culture conditions significantly influence synthesis of bacterial outer membrane and secreted proteins, which are critical antigens, and thus impact the immunogenicity of bacterin-based vaccines. In this study, we ass

Prevalence and patterns of ectoparasites infesting Pallas's squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

The Pallas's squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus) has invaded fragmented woodlands in urban areas of Kanagawa Prefecture, where frequent human contact occurs. We examined 538 squirrels in Hayama-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, for ectoparasite infestations. A total of 1,164 lice, 877 fleas, and 231 ticks were retrieved from 297 (55.2%), 338 (62.8%), and 135 (25.1%) squirrels, respectively. The identified ectoparasite species were Neohaematopinus callosciuri, Ceratophyllus anisus, Haemaphysalis flava, Haemaphysalis hystricis, and Ixodes turdus. The prevalence of N. callosciuri and C. anisus was signi

Additional records of Neopsittaconirmus lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) parasitizing captive parrots.

Species of the chewing louse genus Neopsittaconirmus Conci, 1942 are host-specific parasites on Old World and Australasian parrots (Psittaciformes), infesting both wild and captive birds. Despite veterinarian practices that attempt to eliminate parasites from captive hosts, two species, Neopsittaconirmus gracilis Guimarães, 1974 and Neopsittaconirmus vendulae Sychra, 2006, frequently infest captive birds, not only their regular natural hosts, but also other species that are not naturally parasitized. Here we report and discuss additional records of these two species of lice from captive parrot

Identification and Characterization of Ectoparasite-Borne Pathogens Through Vector and Animal Surveillance in Andean Countries, South America.

Infectious diseases transmitted by ectoparasites such as fleas, lice, mites, and ticks constitute a global public health problem. Tick-borne diseases are the most widely studied emerging ectoparasite-borne diseases (EBD) mainly due to their increasing incidence worldwide, including in South America. Furthermore, in Peru and neighboring Andean countries (Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador), surveillance reports indicate that Rickettsia species appear to be the most diverse and widely distributed ectoparasite-borne pathogens (EBP) followed by Babesia species, and with fewer species of Anaplasma, Bar

Diversity and eco-epidemiology of ectoparasites and Rickettsia spp. associated with the opossums Didelphis albiventris Lund in livestock farms from Argentinian Pampas region.

Many ectoparasite species serve as vectors for bacteria that are significant to both public and animal health, with wild, domestic and synanthropic mammals acting as reservoirs. However, limited information exists on the circulation and incidence of these vectors in Argentina. We examined the diversity, prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites, along with the presence of Rickettsia spp., of Didelphis albiventris Lund (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) within a rural landscape of the Pampas region, Argentina. We also analysed variations in ectoparasite populations concerning seasonality, livestock

The generalist Caligus elongatus is better at dampening the Atlantic salmon immune response than the salmonid specialist Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

The sea lice Caligus elongatus and Lepeophtheirus salmonis are both causing problems in salmonid aquaculture. Since the salmonid specialist L. salmonis represents the dominating problem, research on host-parasite interactions has focused on L. salmonis and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), while less is known for the generalist C. elongatus. As new knowledge can be found in the comparison between a specialist and a generalist, the present study compares the salmon immune responses and louse modulatory proteins between C. elongatus and L. salmonis. While the severity of skin lesions inflicted unde

Unveiling the chewing lice (Menoponidae and Philopteridae) fauna of the Brazilian Northeast: new records for Maranhão and Piauí States.

Lice (Phthiraptera) are obligate ectoparasites of birds and mammals found worldwide. Chewing lice, belonging to the families Menoponidae and Philopteridae, are particularly diverse in Brazil, although their distribution is unevenly documented across states. This study focused on recent collections from protected areas in Maranhão and Piauí, the sampling involved mist netting and comprehensive ectoparasite examination, with specimens identified using both light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. A total of 239 birds were collected, 63 (26.35%) of which were infested with chewing lice.

Reviving knowledge: A 70-year gap in the host-parasite relationship between Trichodectes galictidis (Ischnocera: Trichodectidae) and Galictis cuja (Molina, 1782) (Carnivora: Mustelidae).

Galictis cuja is one of the least known mustelids in South America, with its frequency and distribution poorly documented across the Neotropical region from Mexico to Brazil. In February 2024, a female was rescued by fishermen on Porto Beach in Imbituba, Santa Catarina. A clinical examination revealed ectoparasites on the animal, identified as Trichodectes galictidis, a louse species not detected in these animals for over 70 years. This study explores the revival of knowledge regarding the host-parasite relationship between Trichodectes galictidis and Galictis cuja, highlighting a significant

The digestion time for salmon louse (Lepeoptheirus salmonis) in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in relation to freshness, developmental stage, and temperature.

Sea lice infestations cause significant economic losses in the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry. To biologically control sea lice at farming sites, cleaner fish such as lumpfish are employed. However, the efficacy of lumpfish is under constant debate, primarily due to limited knowledge of digestion times, which makes it difficult to interpret the number of salmon lice found in the stomach contents of dissected lumpfish. The aim of this study was to provide quantitative estimates of the degradation of salmon lice over a period of 12 days. After an acclimation period of approximately one wee

Healthy skin for children and young people with skin of colour starts with clinician knowledge and recognition: a narrative review.

Skin conditions most frequently encountered in paediatric practice include infections, infestations, atopic dermatitis, and acne. Skin of colour refers to skin with increased melanin and darker pigmentation, and reflects global racial and ethnic diversity. Managing skin conditions in skin of colour requires health equity nuance, which is rarely explicitly taught. Awareness of the demographic factors, social determinants of health, and cultural practices that affect prevalence, morphological differences, and treatment of skin conditions is imperative. In this Review, we present the burden and c

GENOMICS AND MORPHOLOGY RESOLVE CHIPMUNK SUCKING LOUSE SYSTEMATICS (GENUS HOPLOPLEURA).

Sucking lice are obligate parasites of eutherian mammals and are generally considered to be host-specific parasites. Molecular investigations have found that some current louse taxonomy is incorrect and does not reflect the relationships among families and species. Western chipmunks (23 species of Tamias) and the eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) are infested by 2 different species of Hoplopleura sucking lice, Hoplopleura arboricola and Hoplopleura erratica. Hoplopleura arboricola has been found on 19 of 23 western chipmunk species, and H. erratica has only been recorded as a parasite of T. s

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Parasitic Lice in Tibetan Yaks, Pigs and Sheep.

The infestation of ectoparasites poses a severe problem in animal breeding, severely affecting animal health and causing substantial economic losses. However, limited information is available regarding lice infestations in plateau livestock. To address this, we collected and examined lice samples from Tibetan yaks, pigs and sheep, amplifying the rrnS and cox1 genes for evolutionary analysis. The results revealed that the prevalence of lice was 51.3% (95% CI: 44.0-58.6%) in yaks, Tibetan sheep and Tibetan pigs, with regional prevalence ranging from 7.7% to 67.5%. Morphometric analysis showed th

Evaluation of the effectiveness of "Shega" natural and self-made solution as compared to permethrin lotion in eliminating head lice in infested Schoolchildren in Gondar area, Ethiopia: a randomized non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestation among schoolchildren leads to social stigmatization, psychological distress, superinfection, and lack of concentration because of sleeplessness. Head lice infestation is universal and not found solely in privileged populations. Although there are modern medicines for the treatment of head lice, most communities are unable to access them due to high prices, limited supply in remote areas, or lack of willingness to use them because of the negative attitudes towards head lice infestation amongst children and the community. Therefore, this study assessed the effec

THE IMPACTS OF ROCK DOVE (COLUMBA LIVIA) PREEN OIL ON WING LOUSE (COLUMBICOLA COLUMBAE) BEHAVIOR AND SURVIVAL.

The avian uropygial gland secretes preen oil, a complex blend of lipids that birds spread on their feathers during preening. Although preen oil is known to help birds maintain feather condition, there has been increasing evidence suggesting preen oil also affects other organisms that reside on bird feathers, such as bacteria, mites, and lice. In a series of experiments, we investigated the effects of Rock Dove (Columba livia) preen oil on the behavior and survival of feather-feeding wing lice (Columbicola columbae). These lice spend the majority of their lives hidden between flight feather bar

Environmental Changes Drives the Transcriptome and Gene Regulation Plasticity During Sea Lice Infestation.

The sea louse, Caligus rogercresseyi, is one of the main concerns in the Chilean salmon industry. The free-living copepodid stage can recognize the host and initiate the parasitic phase, where environmental factors can shape the host recognition process. This study aimed to explore the ecological influence on the transcriptome of copepodids infesting Atlantic salmon experimentally exposed to different salinity and temperature (S/T) conditions. Herein, 200 salmon were infested with 35 copepodids per fish previously acclimatized to four S/T treatments: 32 and 26 PSU; 8 and 16°C. After 48 h of in
