Elbow injuries-particularly to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL)-have been a problem in sports medicine for at least half a century. As a pitcher rotates his trunk to face the target and externally rotates his throwing arm, varus torque is produced at the elbow to decelerate arm cocking and initiate arm acceleration. With today's pitchers being larger, throwing harder, and playing more often during their development years, repetition of large varus torque leads to more UCL injuries. Pitch count limits for games, seasons, and per year may provide some prevention of overuse injuries. Varying e

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric tennis participation has grown steadily, yet limited research exists on sex- and age-based injury differences in this population. Understanding these patterns can inform tailored injury prevention efforts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) for tennis-related emergency department (ED) visits in patients under 18 years old from 2014 to 2023. Injuries were analyzed by sex, age group, injury type, and body region. National estimates (NEs) were calculated using NEISS sample weights. Statistical comparisons were perf

Elbow joint injuries continue to increase in frequency in baseball at all levels. It is the most commonly injured joint in professional baseball and approximately 25% of all Major League Pitchers have had a ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery and approximately 30% of Minor League pitchers. Injuries to the elbow joint are increasing in scholastic and youth baseball players too. Often the differential diagnosis between UCL injuries and flexor/pronator tendinitis is difficult for the clinician. The purpose of this commentary is to describe the clinical thought process used to assist in making

INTRODUCTION: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a popular combat sport including wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, which involves danger and violence. It is reported to have one of the greatest injury rates among different sports, limits participation, and often consists of considerable medical costs. The available literature on MMA injuries is sparse and requires a comprehensive review of injuries in this popular sport. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted with the aim of critically evaluating the epidemiological literature on injury patterns, mechanisms, and associated risk fa

Background/Objectives: Falls and upper limb injuries (ULI) are prevalent in older adults, yet whether ULI independently predisposes to subsequent falls remains poorly characterized. This nationwide cohort study evaluated the association between ULI and future fall risk using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (2011-2019, follow-up through 2020). Methods: Adults aged ≥ 50 years with newly diagnosed ULI-defined as fractures (clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, hand), sprains, strains, or open wounds of the shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand-were propensity scor

BACKGROUND: Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a transformative approach for outcome prediction in diverse disease contexts. This study sought to construct a prognostic prediction model leveraging ML algorithms and to elucidate risk factors linked to residual pain in patients with acute lateral ankle ligamentous sprains (ALALS) after functional treatment.
METHODS: A total of 695 ALALS patients who received functional treatment were included in the analysis. Using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score of ≥ 4 at the one-year post-treatment mark as the criterion, participants were grouped into pai

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum occurs in adolescent baseball players, with repetitive throwing recognized as a major risk factor. Whether repetitive batting contributes to cumulative capitellar loading remains unclear. We hypothesized that repetitive batting would increase cumulative mechanical loading on the humeral capitellum, as assessed with computed tomography (CT) osteoabsorptiometry.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 32 healthy male collegiate baseball players (64 elbows), all right-handed throwers, underwent bilateral elbow CT during the off-season. Base

Artistic gymnastics is a complex and challenging sport. The specific demands of gymnastics place athletes at unique risk of injuries to the spine, as well as upper and lower extremities. Changes to the rules and scoring system since the 2004 Olympics have encouraged athletes to perform more challenging skills, adding to the risk of injury. Single-sport specialization occurs at a young age among competitive gymnasts, introducing an increased risk of overuse injuries. Common injuries include spondylolysis, medial-sided elbow injuries, gymnast's wrist, ligamentous injuries of the knee, and Achill

Elbow injuries resulting from acute trauma or repetitive overuse are a common source of pain and functional limitation in both athletes and the general population. This review presents a radiologic approach to the evaluation and management of these conditions. It describes the roles of key imaging modalities and provides practical guidance for assessing traumatic injuries such as fractures, ligamentous disruptions, and tendon avulsions. Common overuse conditions, such as medial epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis, and nerve compression syndromes, are reviewed with attention to characteristic

Pediatric elbow injuries are a common complaint presenting to emergency departments. The unique anatomy and skeletal immaturity in children can make the elbow particularly difficult to evaluate and manage. Additionally, many healthcare institutions have limited or no access to pediatric orthopedic specialists, leaving management decisions to the clinician at the bedside. This review highlights the nuances of the pediatric elbow examination, addressing both acute and subacute (overuse) injuries. Common fracture types are reviewed, and key principles of x-ray interpretation are demonstrated, inc

BACKGROUND: The Outerbridge-Kashiwagi (O-K) procedure has been widely used to treat elbow osteoarthritis by improving range of motion and alleviating mechanical impingement. Supercharged end-to-side (SETS) anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) transfer has emerged as a promising technique for restoring hand muscle function in patients with ulnar nerve palsy. However, no previous studies have evaluated the combined use of these procedures in patients with both elbow arthritis and severe ulnar neuropathy presenting with intrinsic hand muscle atrophy. We hypothesized that the combination of the O-K p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High-resolution ultrasonography (US) has become increasingly popular in cubital tunnel syndrome (CubTS). In this article, we confirmed the diagnostic role of US in a large and homogeneous cohort of patients. Our primary aim was to analyze the predictive role of US findings. By systematically re-evaluating neurosonographic abnormalities over time, we also sought to assess the role of US during follow-up.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with CubTS based on clinical, electrophysiological, and sonography findings and operated on for in situ decompression of the ulnar nerve

BACKGROUND: The anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) end-to-side (ETS) nerve transfer is a relatively recent treatment innovation in managing cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). Potential benefits must be balanced against the risks associated with the adoption of an innovative technique, evaluating procedure-specific risks, and considering additional costs in the safe delivery of care. The ETS technique has been proposed as a method of improving intrinsic muscle function in the hand in the setting of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow. The technique is controversial with emerging evidence from retr

This case is a 37-year-old man with diffuse primary synovial chondromatosis of the elbow, with associated ulnar nerve compression and flexion contracture at the elbow. An open synovectomy with removal of loose bodies and an ulnar nerve decompression with anterior subcutaneous transposition were performed. Postoperatively, the patient's elbow mobility and nerve compression symptoms improved steadily, which significantly improved his function. Primary synovial chondromatosis of the elbow is a rare disease that can result in pain, swelling, decreased range of motion, and mechanical symptoms. Trea

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is a commonly seen form of compressive neuropathy. This study aimed to assess the clinical value of 3D-FIESTA-C for evaluating the arcuate ligament in patients with CuTS. METHODS: Between October 2018 and May 2019, 22 inpatients diagnosed with CuTS were enrolled (15 males, 7 females; mean age 60.91 ± 7.38 years). All patients underwent preoperative 3D-FIESTA-C scanning of the elbow joint and subsequently received cubital tunnel release. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and kappa value of the

Objective Almost 70 years ago, Osborne described a fibrous band, Osborne’s ligament, stretching between the humeral and ulnar heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris, which forms the cubital tunnel’s roof. Prior to this account, this ligament had received limited attention in the anatomical literature and had been poorly studied. Therefore, the present anatomical study was performed to better elucidate this structure. Methods thirty adult anatomical donors (60 sides) underwent dissection of the medial aspect of the elbow with a focus on Osborne’s ligament. Identified ligaments were documented, class

AIMS: The aim of this nationwide population-based cohort study was to identify the risk factors associated with the development of idiopathic cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), and the factors which influence the requirement for surgery in these patients.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 43,189 patients newly diagnosed with idiopathic CuTS between January 2009 and December 2021, using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. They were identified using diagnostic codes, procedural codes for surgery, and/or electrodiagnostic study codes. Patients with cervical radiculopathy, brachial p

BACKGROUND: Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow is common but results of ulnar nerve transposition remained uncertain. Chronic nerve ischemia is implicated in the syndrome's pathophysiology, and surgical interventions aim to mitigate related damage. The main hypothesis is that preserving the vascular system during ulnar nerve transposition helps prevent ischemic damage and improves clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Thirty five patients were included and divided into two groups: 'Vascularized Ulnar Nerve' (UNV+) and 'Non-vascularized Ulnar Nerve' (UNV-). They underwent subcutaneous anterior transpos
