Risk factors for idiopathic cubital tunnel syndrome : development and surgical intervention from a nationwide population-based cohort study.

AIMS: The aim of this nationwide population-based cohort study was to identify the risk factors associated with the development of idiopathic cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), and the factors which influence the requirement for surgery in these patients. METHODS: We analyzed data from 43,189 patients newly diagnosed with idiopathic CuTS between January 2009 and December 2021, using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. They were identified using diagnostic codes, procedural codes for surgery, and/or electrodiagnostic study codes. Patients with cervical radiculopathy, brachial p

Ultrasound and clinical outcomes of vascularized ulnar nerve transposition.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow is common but results of ulnar nerve transposition remained uncertain. Chronic nerve ischemia is implicated in the syndrome's pathophysiology, and surgical interventions aim to mitigate related damage. The main hypothesis is that preserving the vascular system during ulnar nerve transposition helps prevent ischemic damage and improves clinical outcomes. METHODS: Thirty five patients were included and divided into two groups: 'Vascularized Ulnar Nerve' (UNV+) and 'Non-vascularized Ulnar Nerve' (UNV-). They underwent subcutaneous anterior transpos

Determinants of the Maximal Nerve Cross-Sectional Area and Its Role in the Separation of Entrapment and Compression Ulnar Neuropathies at the Elbow.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) is the most robust and sensitive ultrasonographic indicator of nerve pathology. The study aimed to identify predictors of maximal CSA (CSAmax) in ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) and to assess its utility in elucidating the mechanism of UNE, which is potentially important for patient referral to a surgeon. METHODS: In a group of prospectively recruited UNE patients, 11 demographic, clinical, and electrodiagnostic features were recorded. CSAmax in the elbow segment was measured ultrasonographically. Explanatory variables for CSAmax were de

Surgical outcomes of cubital tunnel syndrome with acute symptom exacerbation caused by elbow ganglion cysts: a retrospective case series of 32 patients.

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) caused by elbow ganglion cysts, characterized by abrupt onset or sudden exacerbation of ulnar nerve symptoms, is a rare condition with few reported cases. The current study aims to retrospectively assess the surgical treatment outcomes of patients with CuTS with acute symptom exacerbation caused by ganglion cysts from elbow joint. METHODS: From January 2023 to June 2024, patients diagnosed with CuTS with acute symptom exacerbation who were admitted to our hospital and followed up. Routine X-ray was performed to evaluate the degeneration of the elbow

Reinnervation assessment using a modified nerve conduction study protocol following end-to-side anterior interosseous nerve transfer in advanced cubital tunnel syndrome: A case series and proof of concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Supercharge end-to-side (SETS) anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) transfer augments motor recovery in advanced cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). However, standard electrodiagnostic studies cannot differentiate between native ulnar nerve regeneration and reinnervation via AIN transfer. We aimed to establish a proof-of-concept for a modified nerve conduction study (NCS) protocol by employing median nerve stimulation to electrophysiologically isolate and evaluate AIN-mediated motor recovery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 13 patients with advanced CuTS who underwent AIN SETS tra

Ultrasound-Guided Near-Nerve Needle Assessment of the End-to-Side Anterior Interosseous to Ulnar Motor Nerve Transfer Contribution to Hand Intrinsic Reinnervation in Compressive Ulnar Neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: In severe ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), occasionally surgeons will employ an end-to-side (ETS) nerve transfer of the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) motor branch of pronator quadratus (PQ) to the ulnar motor component distally (AIN ETS). We used an ultrasound (US)-guided near-nerve monopolar needle stimulation of the AIN to determine the specific contribution of the transferred PQ motor branch to the ulnar-innervated hand intrinsic muscles following AIN ETS in patients with UNE. METHODS: After inserting the monopolar needle under US guidance, direct stimulation of

Increasing surgical rate of clavicle fractures and acromioclavicular dislocations in Chile: analysis over the last 15 years reveals disparities in access according to insurance type.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, an increase in surgeries to treat clavicle injuries has been reported. It has been hypothesized that the studies regarding the beneficial effect of surgery in patients with displaced clavicle fractures may have contributed to raise the surgical rates for injuries around the clavicle. To our knowledge, there is a lack of data from Latin American countries on surgical rates of clavicle-related surgeries. The aim of this study is to describe the rate of clavicle surgeries, including clavicle fracture and acromioclavicular dislocation, in the last 15 years and to analy

Prognostic value of health-related quality of life in patients with acute dyspnoea: a cohort study.

The elbow is a common site of orthopaedic injury in the paediatric population. The number of these injuries continues to rise following increased levels of participation in paediatric recreational and competitive sport. Injuries to the paediatric elbow can be classified as either overuse or acute. Delineating injury patterns to the elbow in children can be challenging, given the cartilaginous composition of the distal humerus and the multiple secondary ossification centres that appear and unite with the epiphysis at defined ages.
