This article presents the results of a case--control study regarding the background to handball injuries among players of 12 years and older. Data were collected by means of a written questionnaire on the nature, location and direct causes of the injuries as well as information on risk factors. Injured players (n = 130) are compared with non-injured players (n = 512). The response for the cases was 67% and for the controls 75%. This paper evaluates the effects of a bolt gun support stand on impact loading of the hand-arm system while firing spiked bolts into a steel beam. Ten healthy male subjects fired two bolts into the centre of the beam, one with and one without the aid of the support stand. During firing of a bolt gun, the shock sequences were recorded by two accelerometers. The analysis showed that peak values of acceleration decreased more than eightfold during firing with the bolt pistol support. The shock damping effect due to the bolt support was noted at the thumb (metacarpal level) and elbow bones.

Repetitive strain injuries include a group of disorders that most commonly develop in workers using excessive and repetitious motions of the neck and upper extremity. The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) provides stability to the medial aspect of the elbow during valgus stress. Trauma to this ligament may result from repetitive forceful throwing. Diagnosis of UCL injury has been based on clinical findings of medial joint pain and valgus instability, as direct imaging of this structure has not been available. From September 1974 to December 1987, seventy-one patients were operated on for valgus instability of the elbow. The average length of follow-up of sixty-eight patients (seventy operations) was 6.3 years (range, two to fifteen years). At the operation, a torn or incompetent ulnar collateral ligament was found. Self-report data on musculoskeletal discomfort were collected from several hundred VDT users in two agencies of a state government. Aspects of worker posture and workstation design were objectively assessed for 40 of the VDT users. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between these ergonomic variables and musculoskeletal discomfort.
