The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is the terminal sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve supplying the lateral aspect of forearm. Because of its close proximity to the biceps brachii tendon (BBT), the lateral epicondyle (LE), and the cephalic vein (CV), surgery and venipuncture in the cubital fossa can injure the LACN. Measurement data regarding the relative anatomy of LACN are scarce. We, therefore, dissected 96 upper extremities from 26 males and 22 females to expose the LACN in the cubital fossa and forearm. The LACN consistently emerged from the lateral margin of BBT. I

Ultrasonography has had relatively long history (approximately 20 years) in the diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome, but as late as in last decade has gained greater popularity and has been applied in the clinic. Numerous studies revealed that the most accurate parameter indicating the compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel is the cross sectional area of the nerve at the inlet level. However, contrary to the nerve conduction studies, sonographic measurements are characterised by wide range of normal, physiological (a mean of 4.8 to 9.7 mm2), pathological, indicating compression of

PURPOSE: Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome commonly present with paresthesias and pain extending into the small finger and proximal to the hand. This study was conducted to assess the ability of carpal tunnel release to relieve symptoms outside of the median nerve distribution.
METHODS: We enrolled 34 consecutive surgical patients (40 wrists) diagnosed exclusively with carpal tunnel syndrome based on the history, physical examination, and electrodiagnostic studies. Preoperative symptoms were categorized as pain, numbness, tingling, or "burning and electrical shocks." The presence or absenc

HYPOTHESIS: Traumatic injuries to the ulnar nerve at the elbow are a frequent problem as it is vulnerable to stretching and compression with motion of the upper limb. The aim of the present study was to explore the course of the ulnar nerve at the elbow and forearm and to determine possible anatomical structures that may cause compression of this structure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 12 upper limbs from cadavers. The length of any fibrous bands, and if present, their distance to the medial epicondyle was recorded.
RESULTS: On 5 sides a fibrous band originating from the medial intermu

BACKGROUND: Improvement of motor function of the upper extremity was investigated in a patient following bilateral forearm transplantation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Following an electric shock injury with amputation of both forearms at the proximal level a bilateral allotransplantation was performed 2003 in a 41-year-old male patient. Missing and insufficient muscles were replaced by donor units. For use of myoprothesis in case of transplant failure remnants of BR, ECRL, ECRB and ECU remained at the recipient. 3.5 mm DCP plating was used without bone grafting to stabilize the forearm bones. This report documents retrospectively a case of Posterior Interosseous Neuropathy (PIN) occurring in an elite baseball pitcher experiencing a deep ache in the radial aspect of the forearm and altered sensation in the dorsum of the hand on the throwing arm during his pitching motion. The initial clinical goal was to control for inflammation to the nerve and muscle with active rest, microcurrent therapy, low-level laser therapy, and cessation of throwing. Minimizing mechanosensitivity at the common extensor region of the right elbow and PIN, was achieved by employing the use of myofascial releas

Dissections of 30 upper extremities from 15 skeletally mature cadavers were performed to identify the levels of origin and penetration of the innervation of the extensor carpi radialis brevis and supinator muscles. The humeroradial joint was used as a reference point for measurements. The most common pattern of extensor carpi radialis brevis innervation consisted of a single origin from the posterior interosseous nerve at the level of the humeroradial joint branching to penetrate the muscle at a level 30 mm to 60 mm distal to the humeroradial joint. The common innervation pattern of the supina

BACKGROUND: Patients who have suffered obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) have a high incidence of musculoskeletal complications stemming from the initial nerve injury. The presence of muscle imbalances and contractures leads to typical bony changes affecting the shoulder, including the SHEAR (Scapular Hypoplasia, Elevation and Rotation) deformity. The SHEAR deformity commonly occurs in conjunction with Medial Rotation Contracture (MRC) of the arm. OBPI also causes muscle imbalances at the level of the forearm, that lead to a fixed supination deformity (SD) in a small number of patients.

BACKGROUND: Nearly all pediatric humeral shaft fractures can be successfully treated with closed methods. Some patients, however, require internal fixation either because of an inability to maintain an adequate reduction, significant soft tissue injury, or concomitant fractures.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all traumatic humeral shaft fractures treated at our hospitals between 1999 and 2006. Thirteen pediatric patients ranging in age from 4.8 to 16.7 years (mean age 12.0 years) were treated surgically with titanium elastic nails (TENs). Relative surgical indications included ope

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), also known as repetitive strain injuries of the upper extremity, frequently cause disability and impairment of the upper extremities. Histopathological changes including excess collagen deposition around myofibers, cell necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, and increased cytokine expression result from eccentric exercise, forced lengthening, exertion-induced injury, and repetitive strain-induced injury of muscles. Repetitive tasks have also been shown to result in tendon and neural injuries, with subsequent chronic inflammatory responses, fol

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a frequent complication of pregnancy, with a prevalence reported as high as 62%. The most typical symptoms are numbness and tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and radial half of the ring finger. Other common manifestations include burning dysesthetic wrist pain, as well as the loss of grip strength and dexterity. Proximal radiation along the volar forearm, medial arm, and shoulder, while not as common, is not unusual. Symptoms are often worse at night and can be exacerbated by forceful activity and extreme wrist positions. It can be diagnosed to

A 54-year-old man experienced injury to the second finger of his left hand due to damage from a paintball gun shot 8 years prior, and the metacarpo-phalangeal joint was amputated. He gradually developed mechanical allodynia and burning pain, and there were trophic changes of the thenar muscle and he reported coldness on his left hand and forearm. A neuroma was found on the left second common digital nerve and was removed, but his symptoms continued despite various conservative treatments including a morphine infusion pump on his left arm. We therefore attempted median nerve stimulation to trea

Three months after he was employed as a poultry worker, a 48-year-old man developed involuntary jerks of his right first, fourth, and fifth fingers, paraesthesiae, weakness, and eventually wasting of the first dorsal interosseous muscle. His job entailed repetitive lifting of boxes weighing 10-25 kg with flexion of the elbow, pronation of the forearm, and ulnar deviation of the wrist. A nerve conduction study indicated ulnar neuropathy just distal to the elbow. Surgery at this level alleviated the symptoms, but shortly after his return to work, he changed jobs because of aggravation.

Peripheral nerve injures are common and often result in impaired functional recovery. The majority of injuries involve the arm and/or the hand. The traditional treatment for peripheral nerve injuries is repair by using microsurgical techniques, either by primary nerve suture or nerve graft, but research to find more successful methods that could improve recovery is ongoing. Tubulisation has been investigated by several authors and is suggested as an alternative to microsurgical techniques. The resorbable poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) is one of the materials that has been previously tested
