Iron Deficiency Anemia Linked to Severe Pediculosis Capitis in a 12-Year-Old Boy.

BACKGROUND Head lice is a common condition in school-age children caused by Pediculus humanus capitis. Although typically associated with scalp itching and discomfort, chronic or severe infestations can occasionally lead to more severe health consequences. This report describes a 12-year-old boy from Missouri, USA, presenting with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and a severe head lice infestation. IDA is characterized by insufficient iron to meet the body's needs, typically due to blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, or malabsorption. While there is no established causative relationship between

Death by lice? - A case of fatal secondary anaemia following severe lice infestation.

Head lice are generally considered harmless but in rare cases, a prolonged infestation can lead to severe consequences even resulting in the individuals' death. This article presents the case of a 56-year-old man who died from severe secondary anaemia most probably caused by prolonged and pronounced lice infestation. The man, who lived in poor hygienic conditions and suffered from schizophrenia and alcohol addiction, was found breathing heavily on the floor of his apartment and later died during the emergency measures. His body was covered in thousands of lice, even affecting his respiratory o

A descriptive-taxonomic study of two types of lice isolated from goats in the Basrah Governorate, Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis is an infestation of warm-blooded animals, and it is an important economic problem for various livestock and poultry hosts. Lice are termed direct parasites because they produce skin imperfections at tanneries because of the irritation they create during feeding. The feeding process triggers irritation or itching in the skin, resulting in rubbing and scratching. AIM: The study isolated, described, and diagnosed two biting and sucking lice species in goats in Basrah City, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total examination of 50 male and female goats was performed for lice coll

Epidemiological, Morphometric, and Genetic Analysis of Pediculus humanus capitis (Head Lice) in Pakistan: Evidence of Regional Diversity and Global Admixture.

PURPOSE: Pediculus humanus capitis poses a significant public health challenge among schoolchildren worldwide, emphasising the need for control efforts. The present study aimed to integrate epidemiological, morphometric, and mitochondrial genetic data on head lice across diverse regions of Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1536 school-aged children was carried out across four districts in Pakistan. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on risk factors. Head lice were morphologically examined and genomic DNA extracted. The mitochondrial markers cox 1 and cyt-b were am

Treatment failure of over-the-counter pediculicide shampoos in Thai schoolgirls: Evidence of insecticide resistance.

The increasing resistance to chemical pediculicides has raised concerns about the efficacy of head lice treatments, including in Thailand. This study evaluated the efficacy of three commercially available pediculicide shampoos (0.75% permethrin, 0.6% carbaryl, and 0.12% Stemona root crude extract) among infested children in Chonburi Province, Thailand. A pre-test/post-test experimental design was conducted with 135 infested female children assigned to three treatment groups (n = 45 each), with no significant differences in baseline demographic characteristics (level of head lice infestations,

Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Pediculosis-associated Severe Anemia in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Infestation with Pediculus species, or common lice, is frequently diagnosed in the emergency department (ED). Because lice ingest human blood, prolonged and heavy infestation can plausibly lead to iron deficiency anemia. Severe anemia attributable to lice infestation has infrequently been reported to date. Our objective in this study was to retrospectively review cases of lice-related anemia at a single public hospital to identify risk factors and associated demographic and clinical features of this disease process. METHODS: We screened the medical records for patients presentin

Molecular evidence of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) collected from disadvantaged children in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Pediculosis capitis, caused by infestation of the human head louse Pediculus humanus capitis is endemic all over the world, and Malaysia is no exception. Permethrin is recommended as one of the first-line treatments for pediculosis capitis. However, after decades of intensive and continuous use, numerous treatment failures and recurrent cases have been reported globally due to established evidence of permethrin resistance. The fact that permethrin-based products are still widely used and available over the counter prompted this study to investigate the genotypic basis of permethrin resistance

Genetic diversity, microbiome composition and socio-sanitary predictors of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) among disadvantaged children in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Pediculosis capitis remains a neglected public health issue in Malaysia, particularly among disadvantaged children. While the genetic diversity of head lice is well studied, their associated microbiome and links to socio-sanitary conditions remain unclear. This study examined 266 children from ten children's establishments in Klang Valley and Greater Kuala Lumpur, of whom 89 (33.46%) were positive for pediculosis capitis. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding identified two clades: A (36%) and C (64%). 16S rRNA metagenomic profiling of pooled samples revealed higher microbial diversit

The Two-Year Itch: Extreme Body Lice Infestation Complicated by Anemia, Eosinophilia, and Elevated Immunoglobulin E.

Human lice infestation, or pediculosis, remains a significant global public health concern, particularly in vulnerable populations living in overcrowded, poorly hygienic conditions. Lice are known to be vectors for arthropod-borne diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. However, a growing body of evidence suggests their potential role in the pathogenesis of iron deficiency anemia, peripheral eosinophilia, and elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. We report a case of a middle-aged male with a two-year history of extensive pruritic skin lesions in the setting of a visible lice infes

Prevalence and Susceptibility Status of Body Louse (Pediculus humanus humanus) (Anoplura: Pediculidae) to Deltamethrin in Urmia City, Iran (2024).

BACKGROUND: The body louse spreads diseases such as epidemic typhus and louse-borne relapsing fever and has shown resistance to various insecticides. While deltamethrin is used to treat infestations in some countries, research on its effectiveness against body lice is limited. This study assessed the susceptibility of body lice to deltamethrin using a bioassay. METHODS: Body lice specimens were collected from an addiction treatment camp in Urmia City, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. They were treated in 5 cm Petri dishes lined with 1 ml of various concentrations of deltamethrin (0.01, 0.02, 0

Napoleon Bonaparte-A Possible Case of Trench Fever.

In 1789, Napoleon Bonaparte reported having a recurrent febrile illness that initially subsided for 4 days and then had multiple relapses of similar duration. A speculative diagnosis of trench fever would be supported by poor hygiene conditions, prolonged exposure to cold, and the presence of lice in Napoleon's barracks environment.

Correlation of Narrow Band Imaging Patterns with Histopathology Reports in Head and Neck Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck malignancies are associated with poor prognosis and poor quality-of-life if detected late. Narrow-Band-Imaging(NBI) is one of the important tools, which helps in detecting these lesions earlier. By using narrow-wavelength(400-550 nm) it enhances the mucosal and submucosal vascularity against the pale mucosal background which helps us detecting benign, pre-malignant and malignant lesions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of NBI in the diagnosis of various mucosal lesions of head and neck region and its correlation with the histopat

Pediculicide regulations and usage trends in Türkiye in 2015-2022.

BACKGROUND: Over the years, the increasing prevalence of head lice infestation has led to an increase in treatment-related costs and the development of resistance to pediculicides. This study aimed to evaluate pediculicide sales over an 8-year period (2015-2022), including the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data on products registered in the Turkish Pharmaceutical Index Dataview, Intercontinental Medical Statistics (IMS) database, sold on prescription and approved by the Ministry of Health in Türkiye were formally requested from the research organization IQVIA for pharmacologically active pedicu

The effect of educational intervention on efficacy of 1% permethrin shampoo and 4% dimeticone lotion to treat head lice infestation using propensity score matching (PSM).

BACKGROUND: Head lice are a main public health problem and the most important human ectoparasites and the use of pediculicides is the most common way to control it. One of the possible causes of treatment failure is the lack of improper application of pediculicide. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of education on efficacy of 1% permethrin or 4% dimeticone lotion to treat head lice infestation. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study included 100 individuals with head lice infestation from comprehensive urban health centers in Ardabil as the intervention group, and 400 individuals

Body lice: a vector for re-emerging disease outbreak in a rehabilitation camp in Northwestern Iran.

OBJECTIVE: The report of the outbreak of body louse in northwestern Iran after three decades reminds us again of the danger of the re-emerging of previous epidemics. RESULTS: The results of the study that nearly 70% of the patients in a rehabilitation Centre were infected with body louse. In this study, scientific measures were taken to prevent the spread of body lice to healthy people, including isolation of the patients, washing the clothes of those infected at high temperatures, and spraying the rest area, beddings, and blankets. This is a more recent report on an outbreak of body louse in
