Effect of a project achievement-oriented Quality Control Circle on traditional Chinese medicine nursing outcomes in elderly patients with distal radius fractures: A retrospective comparative study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a project achievement-oriented Quality Control Circle (QCC) model in improving traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) nursing outcomes for elderly patients with conservatively treated distal radius fractures (DRFs). This retrospective comparative study included 112 elderly DRF patients admitted between June 2022 and December 2023. Based on the admission period, 56 patients (June 2022-March 2023) received routine care (control group), and 56 patients (March-December 2023) received a comprehensive TCM nursing model driven by a project-oriented QCC. Radioulnar Synostosis After Isolated Undisplaced Distal Ulna Fracture: A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: A 50-year-old man developed radioulnar synostosis and presented with restricted forearm rotation, 15 months after sustaining an undisplaced fracture of the ulna. Radiographs and computed tomography revealed a mature bony bridge between the forearm bones. Surgical excision of the heterotopic bone was performed, and bone wax was applied to mitigate hemorrhage and prevent recurrence. Postoperatively, the patient achieved near-complete pronation and supination and no recurrence was found at the end of 2 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Radioulnar synostosis is an infrequent complication asso

Bone Loss After Implant Removal.

This case illustrates the complex challenges of managing forearm trauma complicated by bone loss after implant removal. A long-standing radial shaft plate, integrated into cortical bone with overgrowth, had to be removed to treat a new peri-prosthetic fracture. Removal caused massive cortical loss, leaving poor bone stock for fixation. Dual plating was performed to bridge the defect and stabilize the distal radius fracture, but mechanical failure prompted a staged revision. A deliberately delayed second operation allowed time for biological preparation. Definitive reconstruction included corre

Perioperative NSAID use and postoperative outcomes after distal radius fracture surgery: a propensity-matched cohort study.

PURPOSE: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for pain management following distal radius fracture (DRF) surgery, yet their effects on postoperative complications remain unclear. This study evaluated the association between perioperative prescriptive NSAID use and surgical and medical complications following DRF surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX database identified adult patients who underwent DRF surgery between 2012 and 2024. Patients were categorized based on NSAID prescription within 1 day before to 1 month after surgery. Propensit

Persistent Infected Nonunion of the Proximal Ulna after a Free Vascularized Fibular Graft.

This article presents our experience in managing a case of a persistent infected nonunion of the proximal ulna that failed to heal after a free vascularized fibular graft. Free vascularized bone grafting is one of the best treatments for infected nonunion, but multiple factors must be addressed to achieve bone union. It is crucial to target septic, biological, and mechanical factors systematically using a step-by-step approach, even when faced with a worst-case scenario after a challenging surgery such as a free vascularized fibular graft.

Operant Conditioning of the Motor Evoked Potential in Forearm Extensors of Individuals with Chronic Incomplete Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: Operant up-conditioning of the motor evoked potential (MEP) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation can increase corticospinal excitability for the ankle dorsiflexor and improve its activation in individuals with foot drop due to chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). It is unknown whether MEP up-conditioning can work similarly in the upper limb (UL). OBJECTIVES: As the first step in testing the possibility of MEP up-conditioning enhancing UL neurorehabilitation, we examined the effects of forearm extensor MEP up-conditioning in 6 adults with chronic incomplete cervica

Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome staging in an internal medicine ward: an opportunity for risk stratification and intervention.

BACKGROUND: Effective rehabilitation of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders requires multimodal assessment to guide clinicians' decision-making. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment must include reliable tests. Nevertheless, the interrelationship among various upper limb tests remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of easily applicable upper extremity assessments, including absolute values and asymmetries of muscle mechanical properties, pressure pain threshold, active range of motion, maximal isometric strength, and manual dexterity. A secondary aim was to explore c

Pre- and postsurgery measurements of continuous muscle compartment pressure in patients with extremity trauma.

BACKGROUND: Continuous pressure measurement of traumatized muscle has been shown to be an accurate method of diagnosing acute compartment syndrome (ACS), but no baseline data have been released to show the reaction to surgery in extremity fracture. We sought to establish normal values for perioperative pressures. METHOD: We obtained pressure tracings from prospective clinical trials of forearm and tibia fractures requiring surgery. We standardized data and produced graphs using the ggplot2 library in R version 4.2.2. We generated generalized pressure curves based on the mean pressure and quan

Automatic measurements of volar tilt and radial inclination of the distal radius on 3D models: validation against manual methods.

Assessing distal radius malunions traditionally relies on measuring volar tilt and radial inclination in 2D radiographs. Reliability of these parameters is limited by projection errors and landmark ambiguity. Using 3D models allows more precise quantification of these parameters. This study validated an algorithm for measuring volar tilt and radial inclination on 3D virtual models of malunited and healthy radii. The algorithm establishes a 3D coordinate system and anatomical landmarks replicating conventional 2D definitions to maintain clinical compatibility. Automatic 3D measurements on model

Further Displacement After Initial Nonsurgical Treatment of Minimally Displaced Olecranon Fractures in Children.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric olecranon fractures are uncommon periarticular injuries with unclear treatment guidelines for varying magnitudes of intra-articular displacement. Similar to other pediatric elbow fractures, minimally displaced fractures are treated nonsurgically, and potential for further displacement following nonsurgical treatment exists. This study assesses the incidence and risk factors for further displacement after nonsurgical treatment of minimally displaced pediatric olecranon fractures. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients aged 0 to 15 years with isolated

Biomechanical study on different internal fixation methods for treating Mayo type IIA olecranon fractures of the ulna.

The aim of this experiment is to compare the biomechanical strength of six distinct internal fixation techniques for Mayo type IIA olecranon fractures using biomechanical analysis. This study utilized tensile tests on artificial, shape-mimicking olecranon bones to assess their biomechanical properties. A tensile test was performed on the artificial, shape-mimicking olecranon bone at a 90° angle, with the tensile load applied at a rate of 2 mm/min until the test displacement reached 2 mm, at which point the test was halted. Throughout the test, the testing system was able to collect load and di

A Bear of a Case: Multidisciplinary Reconstruction Following a Grizzly Bear Mauling.

Grizzly bear attacks are rare but often result in devastating craniofacial injuries requiring staged, multidisciplinary reconstruction. A 61-year-old male sustained extensive facial trauma, including complete lower lip avulsion and anterior mandibular loss, after a grizzly bear attack. He underwent early stabilization followed by virtual surgical planning-guided fibula free flap reconstruction with immediate dental implants, and a radial forearm free flap incorporating palmaris tendon to restore oral competence. The patient's postoperative course was uncomplicated and he was decannulated and d

Predictors for the necessity of open reduction in the treatment of pediatric both bone forearm fractures with elastic stable intramedullary nailing.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) enables stable osteosynthesis with a low rate of complications in pediatric both-bone forearm fractures. However, repeated unsuccessful attempts at closed reduction can cause unnecessary soft tissue trauma and increased radiation exposure. We conducted a retrospective study of pediatric forearm fracture patients to identify predictors for the need for open reduction when using ESIN. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 65 pediatric patients who underwent ESIN osteosynthesis for both-bone forearm fractures. We analyzed gender

A Comprehensive X-ray Dataset for Pediatric Ulna and Radius Fractures Analysis.

Pediatric forearm fractures, particularly involving the ulna and radius, are among the most common childhood injuries. However, the lack of standardized and openly available datasets has limited progress in artificial intelligence research and constrained clinical validation. To address this issue, we present the Pediatric Ulna and Radius Fractures (PediURF) dataset, a first-of-its-kind, publicly available collection of over 10,000 de-identified images. Each image is carefully annotated by expert radiologists and categorized into three clinically relevant types: proximal, midshaft, and distal

The Clean Pass: Upper Limb Impalement with Complete Neurovascular Preservation.

INTRODUCTION: Impalement injuries of the upper limb represent a rare and striking form of penetrating trauma, often associated with significant risk of neurovascular and tendinous damage due to the compact anatomical arrangement of the forearm. Despite their alarming external appearance, actual morbidity is determined by the trajectory relative to critical structures. Effective management requires careful pre-hospital stabilization, thorough pre-operative assessment, appropriate imaging, and meticulous surgical extraction under direct visualization to minimize complications. CASE REPORT: A 29
