Bone bruising represents a new category of bone injury that can only be demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with fat suppression. This study proposed the nature of non-radiographically evident injuries of the distal radius and wrist in children whose symptoms did not resolve after 5 weeks. We aimed to describe and classify the lesions and delineate the importance and potential complications of the injuries. Bone bruising was diagnosed in 20 patients (mean age: 11.6 years; range: 9-13 years). Bone bruises were classified according to anatomical location and whether they were solita

PURPOSE: To report outcomes in 6 patients with the terrible triad of the elbow treated with our modified protocol.
METHODS: 6 men aged 26 to 54 years underwent surgery for the terrible triad of the elbow by a single surgeon. All the patients had a displaced comminuted fracture of the radius, posterior dislocation of the elbow, and Morrey type-I fracture of the coronoid. They all underwent replacement of the radial head and repair of the lateral collateral ligament to the isometric part of the lateral condyle using suture anchors. Five had an additional capsular fixation to the anterior corono

A fracture of the proximal 1/3 of the ulna, with concurrent fractures of the proximal radial physis and the distal 1/3 of the diaphysis of the radius occurred in a three-month-old, male, neutered, Domestic Shorthaired cat. The ulnar fracture was stabilised with an intramedullary pin. The proximal radial physeal fracture was reduced and stabilised with two crossed Kirschner wires. The proximal radius was secured to the ulna with an additional Kirschner wire. The distal radial diaphyseal fracture was stabilised with a five-hole, 2.0 mm dynamic compression plate (DCP). Six weeks postoperatively t

The majority of clinical tests used to diagnose superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesions of the shoulder have poor diagnostic accuracy, possibly related to a lack of anatomical validity for test procedures. The resisted supination external rotation (RSER) test is suggested to reproduce symptoms associated with a SLAP lesion by placing stress on the labrum through increasing tension in biceps brachii long head. The test requires supination of the forearm against resistance, while the shoulder is externally rotated passively. It was hypothesized that the RSER would increase activity

There is no clear consensus about the best management of intra-articular distal ulnar fractures associated with distal radial fractures in older adults. We describe a treatment wherein the distal radial fractures were securely fixed with a palmar plate, leaving the associated ulnar fractures unfixed. The wrists of 14 patients with a mean age of 74 years were reviewed at an average of 18 months after surgery. The results were excellent in 11 cases and good in three, according to the modified Gartland and Werley score. All fracture sites displayed union, and there was no instability of the dista

BACKGROUND: Pulled elbow (nursemaid's elbow) is a common injury in young children. It results from a sudden pull on the arm, usually by an adult or taller person, which pulls the radius through the annular ligament, resulting in subluxation (partial dislocation) of the radial head. The child experiences sudden acute pain and loss of function in the affected arm. Pulled elbow is usually treated by manual reduction of the subluxed radial head. Various manoeuvres can be applied. Most textbooks recommend supination of the forearm, as opposed to pronation and other approaches. It is unclear which m

Twenty-one patients having proximal ulna nonunion were treated with contoured plating. The most proximal hole received an intramedullary 6.5-mm cancellous lag screw that extends fixation of the nonunion site. Mean age of the patients was 41.7 years. Average follow-up period was 22 months. Union occurred in 19 cases after a mean of 9.6 weeks. Complications were persistent nonunion in two cases, a stiff elbow in one, hardware prominence in two, and a 1 x 1-cm ulcer over the curve of the plate in one case. The two unsatisfactory results were related to ulnohumeral arthritis. In conclusion, augmen

Patients with spinal cord injuries are prone to knee hydrarthrosis (also known as "water on the knee"), which can cause pain, functional impairment and the restriction of social activities. Total knee arthroplasty is a potentially appropriate treatment. Here, we report on a patient presenting partial T12 AIS grade C paraplegia who was able to walk with two forearm crutches, an ankle-foot orthosis on the right leg and a knee-ankle-foot orthosis on the left leg. Thirteen years after the spinal cord injury, the patient presented with septic arthritis of the right knee, complicated by recurrent hy

Radial head fractures are the most common fractures occurring around the elbow. Although radial head fractures can occur in isolation, associated fractures and ligament injuries are common. Assembling the clinical presentation, physical examination, and imaging into an effective treatment plan can be challenging. The characteristics of the radial head fracture influence the technique used to optimize the outcome. Fragment number, displacement, impaction, and bone quality are considered when deciding between early motion, fragment excision, and radial head excision, repair, or replacement. Isol

AIM: Describe the technique of the elbow arthroscopy and discuss their indications through a series of 12 cases and a review of the literature.
METHODS: We report a retrospective study of a short series of 12 cases of elbow arthroscopy performed on 4 years. The indications of this technique were loose bodies in 7 cases, parcellar displaced fracture of radial head in 3 cases, fracture of coronoid process in one case and osseous impingement in one case.
RESULTS: We have noted no complications and at a mean follow up of 18 months (6 to 40 months) our results were almost satisfactory.
CONCLUSIO

PURPOSE: In an attempt to shorten the questionnaires given to patients in both clinical and research settings, we studied whether the correlation of commonly used psychological measures was comparable for the standard Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) and the shorter QuickDASH questionnaires.
METHODS: A cohort of 839 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, de Quervain's disease, trapeziometacarpal arthrosis, lateral epicondylosis, or a distal radius fracture 2 weeks after surgery, who completed the DASH and 1 or more measures of psychological distress, was creat

The case is described of a 45-year-old man with fixed contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joints (digits III-IV) after a stab wound injury in the forearm with subsequent compartment syndrome and partial ulnar injury. Despite neurographic recovery there was permanent contracture during rehabilitation, which was classified as psychogenic. Differential diagnostic aspects of this assumption will be discussed on the basis of clinical criteria as well as 3-phase skeleton scintigraphy and MRT for differentiation between complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type II and other posttraumatic cha

Since 1976, experimental and clinical studies have suggested the superiority of vascularized nerve grafts. In this study, a 27-year experience of the senior author is presented regarding vascularized nerve grafts and fascia for complex upper extremity nerve reconstruction. The factors influencing outcomes as well as a comparison with conventional nerve grafts is presented. Since 1981, 21 vascularized nerve grafts, other than vascularized ulnar nerve, were used for reconstruction of nerve injuries in the upper extremity. Indications were prolonged denervation time, failure of the previously use

We present a case report of a patient, affected by post-polio syndrome and cuff tear arthropathy of his right shoulder, who underwent reverse shoulder arthroplasty. A previous radial deficiency was unmasked in the post-operative follow-up, with passive elbow bending when the forearm was put in an antigravitational position. A precise preoperative neurological evaluation is mandatory in shoulder replacement in order to estimate the functional outcome after surgery.

Slide sheets are often stated to be the cause of hand and forearm injuries. While there are many other possible reasons injuries to nursing staff, carer and client occur, the most important linking factors relating to musculoskeletal disorders and manual handling of people is the ongoing inappropriateness or lack of suitably designed and equipped work areas. As physiotherapist Lynn Varcin-Coad writes, staff are bearing the brunt of inefficiencies of design and lack of high order risk control.

Segmental forearm fractures are relatively uncommon in children, and their optimal management is unclear. We present an unusual segmental fracture of the distal radius in a 14 year old that appears to be related to a large metal wristwatch worn by the patient. It was successfully managed by dosed reduction and immobilisation in a plaster cast.
