BACKGROUND: Baseball pitching requires precise coordination of the upper extremities to generate and transfer angular momentum efficiently while minimizing joint loading. Although the importance of temporal sequencing is recognized, few studies have examined how segmental momentum sequences vary across arm slot styles. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the temporal sequence of peak angular momentum across segments and determine its capacity to predict ball velocity and upper extremity joint loading among overhead (OH), three-quarter (QT), and sidearm (SA) collegiate pitchers

PURPOSE: Radial head arthroplasty is widely used for unreconstructable radial head fractures, particularly in complex elbow trauma, yet long-term outcomes remain poorly documented. This study aimed to assess implant survival and clinical outcomes after radial head arthroplasty performed for traumatic fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study included patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty between 1997 and 2017 with a minimum follow-up of seven years. The primary outcome was implant survival, defined as absence of revision or implant removal. Secondary outcomes included

Distal biceps tendon repair carries a recognised risk of posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury, particularly when anatomical planes and tuberosity landmarks are not precisely identified. This case report describes an acute PIN palsy in a young labourer following single-incision cortical button fixation for a distal biceps rupture. Postoperative imaging revealed proximal malposition of the Endobutton, prompting urgent re-exploration. Intraoperatively, the biceps tendon was found to have been passed radially over the PIN, resulting in stretch and compression, and fixation was non-anatomical.

General orthopaedic surgeons should have up-to-date information on the most common types of hand and wrist injuries, including distal radius fractures, scaphoid fractures, proximal interphalangeal joint injuries, scapholunate and perilunate injuries, nerve lacerations, common pediatric upper extremity injuries, and metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. These topics represent a broad swath of the typical pathologies the common hand surgeon will face in their practice. Providing the most up-to-date evidence and rationale for current treatments should help clinicians identify current themes in the

Delayed tendon injury has been historically treated with several techniques, including staged tendon graft and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) transfers from neighboring rays. Nevertheless, the use of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) hemi-tendon from neighboring fingers may provide the same results with less donor site morbidity. This article aims to present the safety and effectiveness of the fourth FDS hemi-tendon transfer technique to treat zone I-5th FDP injuries on cadaver specimens, and to describe its in vivo application. In 4 fresh-frozen forearms, the fifth FDP was cut at zon

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the accuracy of classification of forearm shaft fractures (FSFs) in adult patients registered in the Swedish Fracture Register (SFR). A secondary aim was to examine intra- and inter-rater reliability for the modified 2007 AO/OTA classification within the SFR.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: FSFs were classified into three types (A-C) based on fracture pattern and further grouped (1-3) according to involvement of the ulna, radius, or both. Of 130 randomly selected radiograph sets, 122 were available and suitable for validation. Three orthopaedic consultant trauma surgeon

INTRODUCTION: Several statistical models have been developed to predict the stability of distal radius fractures after closed reduction, but their findings have not been consistently reproduced. We aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model to predict radiographic outcomes of nonsurgically treated distal radius fractures based on pre-reduction and postreduction radiographic parameters and demographic variables.
METHODS: Adults with displaced distal radius fractures at a single institution between 2012 and 2024 were identified through retrospective chart review. Inclusion criteria required

BACKGROUND: There are knowledge gaps about postsurgical utilization and spending after hand trauma, which has implications for outcomes and access to care.
METHODS: Using 2019-2022 national claims, we examined 30-, 60-, and 90-day postsurgical health care utilization and out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses of flexor tendon repairs, open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of a distal radius fracture, and digital replantation/revascularization. Multivariable regression models were used to examine the association between characteristics and postsurgical utilization and OOP expenses.
RESULTS: Among 22

INTRODUCTION: We conducted an initial orthopaedic resident-based evaluation of a novel three-dimensionally (3D) printed model simulating a displaced, unstable distal radius fracture (DRF). We hypothesized the model would have construct validity, enhance beginner resident performance when used for teaching, and be rated as beneficial.
METHODS: Thirty-three residents across all postgraduate years (PGY) from multiple institutions participated. We gathered baseline clinical DRF experience levels for each through Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education case logs. We block randomized 1

Background: Psychosocial factors may play a role in the management of distal radius fractures (DRF). The purpose of this study was to explore how psychiatric history and socioeconomic status affect access to care, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and complications after adult DRF. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of adult patients from 2005 to 2015 with a DRF was conducted. PROs were collected via DASH and VAS questionnaires. Socioeconomic status was inferred through insurance status and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) based upon the patient's ZIP code of residence. Complications and reopera

The traditional management of distal radius fractures involves the use of fluoroscopy or capsulotomy to guide articular reduction. Arthroscopy is a tool that can aid in achieving articular congruity as well as the management of concomitant injuries, where indicated. In this article, we present a practical arthroscopic step-by-step guide in the treatment of distal radius fractures.

BACKGROUND: Radius bipolar fractures are characterized by an ipsilateral combination of fractures in both the distal and proximal radius, which occur much less commonly than their separate counterparts. We propose the term Joint-Coupled Pattern (JCP) to describe this distinct injury, defined as a single bone fractured at both proximal and distal ends, thereby affecting two adjacent joints. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old female presented with right wrist pain following a motorcycle accident. Initial X-rays revealed a distal radius fracture (2R3B2, volar displacement). Open reduction internal

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Management of pediatric distal forearm fractures ranges from no or simple immobilization to surgical fixation. Treatment decisions depend on age and fracture severity, but practices vary widely across countries. As surgical intervention has increased internationally, we aimed to investigate national trends in incidence and treatment of pediatric distal forearm fractures in Denmark from 1999-2018 Methods: We conducted a population-based register study of children aged 0-15 with distal forearm fractures (S525 + S526) registered in the Danish National Patient Registry from

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate protocol adherence in the follow-up of patients with distal radius fractures (DRFs) managed within the Virtual Fracture Care (VFC) model, and to explore predictors and patterns of deviation across VFC pathways.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a Dutch level 2 trauma center, including 1,677 adult patients with DRFs managed within VFC from January 2022 to January 2024. Actual follow-up was compared with the follow-up planned during the VFC multidisciplinary team meetings. Deviation from the plan was classified as either more or less foll

INTRODUCTION: Fractures and soft tissue damage are the main causes for traumatic peripheral nerve injuries. Discontinuity of peripheral nerve after injury results in loss of motor function or sensation or both combined. This is often associated with debilitating consequences for the affected person. Current data on the epidemiology of peripheral nerve injuries in Germany are scarce.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a non-interventional retrospective population-based cohort study (registry-based), publicly available, anonymized patient data (2019-2023) were analyzed with respect to traumatic periphera

Background and Objectives: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) represent the most common fracture in the elderly population and are typically the first fractures to occur in the sequence of fragility fractures. Although fracture instability is an important criteria for guiding treatment, there is no universal consensus on how to define an unstable DRF. Given the demonstrated influence of bone quality on fracture stability, it has been hypothesized that second metacarpal index (2MCI) may also serve as a predictor of instability in DRFs. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of 2MCI for f

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are commonly treated with cast/splint immobilization, but variations exist in activity restrictions.
METHODS: Fractures of the distal radius/ulna were created in cadaveric forearms. A force was applied through the long axis of the forearm simulating a ground-level fall. Each sample underwent testing in a short-arm well-molded fiberglass cast and a commercial fracture splint. Initial and final position lateral radiographs at 0 N and 400 N of force and dynamic fluoroscopy were taken for calculation of the primary outcome, change in volar tilt. Secondary outco

BACKGROUND: The number of surgical procedures for distal radius fractures in the elderly has increased, even though most studies show little or no benefit over cast treatment. While medical costs of surgical treatment are higher than those of cast treatment, surgery may enable faster recovery and help patients maintain independence, potentially reducing their use of other healthcare resources and informal care.
METHODS: We evaluated whether cast treatment is cost-effective compared to surgery for patients aged 65 years or older with substantially displaced intra-articular distal radius fractu

The aim of this study was to explore the independent risk factors for distal radius fractures in emergency department patients and to establish a corresponding prediction model based on these factors. We retrospectively collected 500 patients with distal radius fractures attending the emergency department of our hospital between January 2020 and December 2024 as an observation group, and selected 500 non-fracture patients attending the emergency department during the same period as a control group. Through univariate analysis and multifactorial logistic regression analysis, we identified indep
