BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use in orthopedic trauma carries an indeterminate risk, with prior studies suggesting increased rates of deep vein thrombosis and elevated mortality. Upper extremity fractures (UEFs) have distinct mechanisms of injury and operative risk. This study evaluates outcomes following operative management of UEFs in patients with and without documented methamphetamine use.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of adults undergoing surgical fixation of UEFs (distal radius/ulna to clavicle; phalangeal, metacarpal, and carpal fractures were exclude

Microsurgical replantation of simultaneous bilateral upper extremity amputations is a complex procedure requiring a highly coordinated multidisciplinary team. Functional outcomes depend on anatomical level of injury, duration of ischemia, extent of crushing, degree of contamination, and quality of postoperative rehabilitation. We report a 45-year-old male industrial worker who sustained complete simultaneous amputations through the distal third of the right forearm and at the left wrist following an industrial paper-cutting machine accident. Total ischemia time was 8 h. Two microsurgical teams

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spiral or oblique metacarpal shaft fractures (MSFs) can be treated nonoperatively with unrestricted mobilisation; however, this approach leads to bone shortening upon healing. While an association between bone shortening and impaired hand function is suspected, empirical clinical evidence is lacking, and differing measurement methods make comparisons between studies difficult.
METHODS: This study is based on a midterm follow-up (mean 4.5 years) of 33 patients with a single spiral or oblique MSF from our previous randomised controlled trial. The original study and the p

BACKGROUND: The pull-in suture technique is a method of primary tendon repair that involves pulling the distal stump of the ruptured tendon into the proximal muscle belly and suturing it to the intact muscle fascia for avulsion injuries at the musculotendinous junctions associated with severe open forearm trauma. The aim of this study is to report the clinical outcomes of the pull-in suture technique for musculotendinous avulsion injuries associated with severe open forearm trauma and to evaluate its effectiveness.
METHODS: This study included patients who underwent pull-in suture repair for

The widespread use of smartphones and electronic devices has raised concerns about their impact on hand and wrist health. This scoping review synthesised current evidence on musculoskeletal and soft-tissue disorders associated with device use. Thirty-two studies were included, examining smartphones, computers and other digital tools. Smartphones were primarily linked to De Quervain's tenosynovitis and flexor pollicis longus tendinopathy, while computers and visual display units were associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain injuries. Key risk factors included repetitive thum

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common surgically treated upper-extremity fractures, and volar locking plate fixation is the predominant operative technique. Although perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is widely used in orthopaedic surgery, procedure-specific evidence for closed distal radius fractures remains limited. Contemporary data regarding postoperative infection rates and antibiotic prophylaxis practice following volar locking plate fixation are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe postoperative infection rates following volar locking plate fixation of

Introduction Injuries sustained by professional athletes can severely impact seasonal performance and future abilities. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of phalanx, thumb, metacarpal, and carpal injuries on the performance of athletes in the National Football League (NFL). Analyzing outcomes for football players is significant because the functional demands of each position vary widely. Methods NFL players who sustained phalanx, thumb, metacarpal, or carpal fractures from the 2012-2013 to 2022-2023 seasons were identified using the public database Pro Sports Transactions. P

Background US-guided hydrodissection is a minimally invasive treatment for nerve entrapment syndromes. However, its independent therapeutic efficacy remains unproven because most studies combine hydrodissection with corticosteroids or dextrose. Purpose To evaluate and compare the clinical and sonographic outcomes and complication rates of three US-guided hydrodissection techniques for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to assess the relative efficacy of hydrodissection. Materials and Methods Adults with refractory CTS were included in this prospective randomized controlled trial

Scaphoid fractures are the most common fracture of the carpal bone and frequently occur in athletic populations due to acute trauma or repetitive wrist loading. Management of these injuries in athletes is challenging because of the need to balance reliable fracture healing with timely return to sport. This narrative review summarizes current literature regarding treatment strategies, healing outcomes, and return-to-sport timelines in athletes with scaphoid fractures. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL between July 2025 and January 2026. A total of 862 records wer

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal bone fractures and are particularly prone to non-union due to their distinctive blood supply1. If left untreated, scaphoid non-union may result in carpal collapse and severe degenerative arthritis, leading to significant impairment of hand function. Delayed or missed diagnoses increase the risk of non-union and subsequent osteoarthritis. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with bone grafting have become the standard approach to prevent the progression of arthritis resulting from non-union2. However, the optimal fixation method r

INTRODUCTION: Fixation of small, very distal volar rim fragments of the distal radius is technically demanding because the classic Henry approach may provide limited ulnar exposure. The Wrist Henry Approach Modification (WHAM) combines a limited volar incision with a dual-window exposure.
HYPOTHESIS: The WHAM approach would enable more ulnar positioning of volar rim-specific plates than the classic Henry approach without increasing approach-related complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-center comparative study included 39 patients with distal radius fractures treate

PURPOSE: To compare arthroscopic versus open radial-approach management of scaphoid nonunion in Schernberg zones 2 and 3, with respect to radiographic union and functional recovery.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 54 consecutive patients treated for scaphoid nonunion in zones 2-3 over two years: 23 by arthroscopy and 31 via an open radial approach. Primary outcome was consolidation rate on imaging. Secondary outcomes were clinical and functional recovery recorded at follow-up; 22 patients underwent standardized clinical evaluation.
RESULTS: Overall consolidation rate was 81% (44/54).

Pediatric scaphoid nonunion is uncommon. Immobilization is initially attempted; however, it causes delays in both intervention and healing. Therefore, surgical intervention has gained broader acceptance and has been implemented in recent years. Among these, arthroscopic management has emerged as a contemporary technique. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of pediatric scaphoid nonunion treated with arthroscopic-assisted bone grafting and Kirschner (K) wire fixation. Six pediatric patients with scaphoid nonunion treated with arthroscopic bone grafting and K-wire fixation between Novembe

BACKGROUND: Distal end radius fractures are among the most common orthopaedic injuries and can significantly impair wrist function if not managed appropriately. Various treatment modalities exist, but achieving stable fixation with minimal complications remains a challenge, especially in extra-articular fractures.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome of distal end radius fractures treated by K-wiring using the ulna as a cantilever.
METHODS: This prospective observational study included 80 skeletally mature patients with extra-articular distal end radius fractures

Colles fracture is a common type of wrist fracture, typically resulting from falling onto an outstretched hand. Postoperative patients often require long-term self-rehabilitation to restore wrist function. However, traditional rehabilitation relies on medical personnel and lacks real-time feedback and progress tracking, which may lead to poor rehabilitation or even deterioration of the condition. This article proposes an intelligent wearable system based on edge computing to enhance the efficiency of self-rehabilitation, improve system portability, and ensure comprehensive recording of rehabil

High-voltage electrical injuries to the upper limb cause multiple areas of tissue loss and particularly involve the region of the fingers, wrist and elbow. The nature of the damage poses a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon in terms of ensuring the adequacy of debridement, timing, and type of soft tissue coverage for the various regions, as well as secondary reconstruction to restore function. We illustrate the possible solution by discussing the care pathway of a young boy who sustained electrical burn injuries to fingers and the volar aspect of the wrist with tissue loss in both upper l

This case report describes the successful multistage reconstruction of a severely mangled hand in a 15-year-old boy following a firecracker explosion. The injury resulted in multiple digit amputations, complex fractures, extensive soft tissue loss, and damage to critical anatomic structures, sparing only the little finger. Initial management focused on debridement, skeletal stabilization, and soft tissue coverage, followed by a carefully planned reconstructive pathway. Key surgical interventions included a medial plantar free flap for glabrous, sensate coverage of the thumb, a second toe trans

BACKGROUND: A high proportion of patients with pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) show glycemic dysregulation. However, studies on the effects of anti-diabetic drugs on PPGL tumor growth are still lacking.
METHODS: We evaluated the effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) semaglutide, metformin and insulin on fresh patient-derived PPGL primary cultures (n=54), including 8 cluster 1 tumors and 18 cluster 2/3 tumors (n=4 tumors with RET pathogenic variants [PVs]). We correlated the primary culture data with clinical data from 67 patients enrolled in the prospectiv
