BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is being utilized more frequently to diagnose fractures in bone and track fracture reduction quickly, and without radiation exposure in the ED. Realistic and practical methods of teaching sonographic fracture identification to medical trainees are needed. The objective of this study is to determine the feasibility of using formalin-embalmed human cadavers in teaching medical trainees to use ultrasound to identify synthetic fractures in tibia, radius, and metacarpal bones.
METHODS: First-year medical students attended an orientation presentation and a 15-min scanning wor

Osteochondral fractures of the fingers are challenging to treat, and it is mandatory to acquire early bone union and joint surface reconstruction to obtain satisfactory outcomes. These injuries sometimes occur as open fractures with poor soft tissue condition and bone defect adjacent to osteochondral fragment. For such cases, surgical treatment can be more difficult, and vascularized bone graft (VBG) could be a useful method for joint reconstruction. Here, we report reverse-pedicled VBG based on the radiodorsal artery of the thumb for reconstructing a traumatic bone defect of the thumb. A 36-y

Trapeziometacarpal dislocation is a rare traumatic lesion, especially in the pediatric population. Various treatments have been described for acute cases. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who was admitted in the emergency department with chronic post-traumatic trapeziometacarpal dislocation due to an untreated first metacarpal base fracture (Bennett), with complete articular destruction. The patient was treated by open reduction, interposition of a costal cartilage graft, and intermetacarpal K-wire fixation. Follow-up at 2 years after the surgery showed excellent clinical and radiologic

INTRODUCTION The purpose of the study was to evaluate the injury-treatment time interval in a group of patients with limb bone fractures over the period of one year; and to compare this interval in the most frequent fractures of the upper and lower limb. MATERIAL AND METHODS The followed-up group of the prospective one-year monocentric study included 3,148 patients treated consecutively for 3,909 fractures. For the purpose of sub-analysis of the injury-treatment time interval in limb bone fractures, excluded from the group were the patients with multiple fractures (520 pts), patients with spin

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Trapezium, as a carpal bone positioned at the distal row, is often associated with other wrist injuries such as distal radius fracture. Isolated trapezium fracture, especially in a comminuted form, rarely occurs. There are only six reports of isolated comminuted trapezium fractures in the literature to the best of our knowledge.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case with an isolated comminuted trapezium fracture presenting pain in his thenar eminence and thumb motion limitation. He was treated by Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) with the K wire pin.

UNLABELLED: The United States has the highest population of inmates in the world (per capita and total). Musculoskeletal disorders are included within the 10 most frequent medical reports of prisoners; however, the literature about them is limited. The purpose of this study is to describe the epidemiology and complications of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries. To our knowledge, this is the first report of musculoskeletal trauma and complications in the prison population.
METHODS: A list of all traumatic orthopaedic injuries and complications, except for spine, was sent to the billing contrac

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid excision and four-corner arthrodesis is an acceptable salvage procedure for the treatment of scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) wrists, since first popularized in the 1980s. We investigated the potential application of novel bioabsorbable plates and screws made of un-sintered hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide composite for the treatment of metacarpal fractures. We used this material for the fixation of four-corner fusions for SLAC or SNAC wrists commencing from April 2009. The purpose of this study was to clarify the controvers

Gunshot wounds to the hand often produce complex injuries and large segmental bone defects. Bone reconstruction remains a challenge in this context. The induced membrane technique is a simple and effective procedure for reconstruction of segmental bone defects. The technique is straightforward but must be performed rigorously. Usually polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement is required for the first stage of the surgery. We describe four cases of metacarpal bone reconstruction after gunshot wounds in a limited-resource setting. Two patients were treated using the induced membrane technique with a

BACKGROUND: The increasingly fashionable sport of motocross is practiced worldwide by millions of people, but there is very little in the literature regarding its associated injuries and their prevention. We therefore present the first comprehensive, prospective study looking at hand and wrist injuries resulting from motocross injuries in the UK.
METHODS: Data was prospectively collected over a 5-year period (from 2010 to 2015) at our regional trauma unit. We exclusively looked at motocross riders. Injuries sustained via motorcycle were excluded from our study.
RESULTS: During the period stu

BACKGROUND: The term "floating" is used in orthopedic literature to describe certain patterns of skeletal injuries that share one common character which is disruption and discontinuity of bones above and below a joint. The first time used in orthopedic literature being in late 1970 to describe a type of elbow injury. Later the word was used increasingly and applied to a variety of injuries affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, forearm, hand, and ankle. Currently, there are about 12 different skeletal injuries described as floating.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article was to define the term "floa

Background: Hand fractures and dislocations are common injuries in the pediatric population. This study aims to characterize the pediatric hand injuries that required closed reduction and identify those that required multiple reduction attempts. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in patients younger than 18 years of age with hand fractures or dislocations who underwent closed reduction in the emergency department (ED). Patients who ultimately required surgical reduction and fixation were not included. Results: Of the 310 hand injuries identified, 148 (114 fractures and 34 di

This anatomical study defines a safe zone for percutaneous or minimally invasive fixation of first metacarpal fractures in order to avoid injury of the superficial branch of the radial nerve and the dorsal branch of the radial artery. The courses of the nerve and artery branches were marked in 20 embalmed cadaver specimens. With computer-assisted surgical anatomy mapping, a large diversity in the anatomical patterns for the nerve and a consistent pattern for the artery were found. Based on these findings, we conclude that transfixation of the first and the second metacarpals with K-wires place

The purpose of this study was to develop a technique allowing a faster return to previous activities after surgical treatment of short transverse and oblique fractures of the diaphysis of the fifth metacarpal. It consisted of an anterograde and retrograde centromedullary double pinning connected. Our series included 40 patients of average age 25 years including 2 women. In 20 cases (group I), an anterograde centromedullary pinning with a 1.6- or 2-mm pin was performed followed by a 6-week orthosis and then 2-week self-education. In 20 cases (group II), an anterograde and retrograde centromedul

BACKGROUNDS: Hand fractures are the second most common upper-extremity fractures. The standard X-ray has shortcomings, such as exposure to radiation. Ultrasound has been reported as an alternative method of detecting hand fractures. In this study, we used meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic value of ultrasound for hand fractures.
METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relative citations up to June 2019. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), area u
