Radiologic morphometry was performed in 125 patients with femoral neck fractures and 74 elderly control subjects to evaluate simple parameters for screening of the population at risk. Reproducibility of metacarpal cortical thickness was high when measured in six metacarpals. Values of this parameter were similar in patients and control subjects. Reproducibility of the Singh index was poor. The patients with femoral neck fractures had a higher vertebral index, more vertebral crush fractures, and a lower Singh index than the control subjects. Since January 1979 we have treated 14 patients at the 1st University Clinic of Traumatology in Vienna with the MFE described by Jaquet. The MFE was used mainly in severe open fractures of fingers and metacarpal bones. All 14 patients were examined for follow-up after a mean interval of 20 months. This method of treatment warrants minimal strain on the soft tissues while it ensures stability and optimal care of the wounds. In treatment of old traumatic dislocations and fracture dislocations of the carpal bone complex, a careful and exactly dosed pre-extension of the shrunken capsular ligaments can be obtained by the use of Wagner's distraction apparatus. Nine patients on long-term hemodialysis with dialysis encephalopathy were studied, with sex matched control subjects for eight of the patients. Over a 6-year period a total of 23 greyhounds and 10 dogs of other breeds were presented with metacarpal and metatarsal fractures. While in other breeds trauma was the usual cause, in greyhounds the injuries were stress or fatigue fractures. In the greyhounds the fractures occurred mainly in young dogs and were often comminuted. Bone status and fracture rates were evaluated in two Yugoslav populations with very different dietary habits. In district A (Podravina) the daily calcium intake was about twice that in district B (Istra). There were similar but smaller differences in the intakes of other nutrients. An illustrated approach to the medial aspect of the equine fetlock joint is described, whereby the collateral ligaments are transected. With tomographic examination of the metacarpophalangeal joint in the straight lateral projection with maximum active extension and flexion, performed after the implantation of 42 Swanson and 41 Niebauer finger joint implants, it was possible to study the in vivo function of these implants. A method was devised to determine the position of the proximal phalanx in relation to the metacarpal bone in the plane of flexion. This was correlated to the ideal position of the proximal phalanx as determined for each of the implants in experimental studies and defined only by the implant axis of rotation.
