Atypical infantile scabies is easily misdiagnosed as common inflammatory dermatoses, leading to therapeutic delay. This 11-month-old female infant presented with two months of generalized pruritus and steroid-refractory palmoplantar pustules, which failed to respond to topical glucocorticoids and calcineurin inhibitors. Epidemiological inquiry revealed familial clustered pruritus and definite occupational scabies exposure in her mother, a ward nurse. Dermoscopy directly identified mites and confirmed the diagnosis. Standardized sulfur ointment treatment for the infant and synchronous eradicati

BACKGROUND: While outpatient management for classic scabies is the standard, severe cases, such as infected scabies or crusted scabies in immunocompromised individuals, may require inpatient care, increasing the financial burden on healthcare systems.
OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study of the cost of scabies inpatient cases from the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) database was undertaken to provide valuable insights for policy-making and resource allocation.
METHODS: This retrospective secondary data analysis used the PhilHealth claims database for inpatient scabies tre

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic infestation that causes substantial morbidity, especially in low-resource tropical regions. Diagnostic limitations, particularly poor sensitivity of microscopy and the impact of dark skin pigmentation on lesion visibility, contribute to persistent transmission. Dermoscopy offers a rapid, non-invasive method of direct visualization of mites, yet evidence from Africa remains scarce. This study evaluates the demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, and the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy compared with skin scraping microscopy among

Potato common scab (PCS) is an economically important soil-borne disease whose occurrence is governed not only by pathogen virulence but also by the disease-associated microbiome and soil environment. However, studies on natural bioactive compounds have primarily focused on direct pathogen inhibition, whereas their roles in microbiome remodeling remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the antibacterial activity of kojic acid (KA) and ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) against Streptomyces scabies and evaluated their effects on PCS severity and the tuber-associated microbiome. Both KA and ε-PL sig

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease endemic in many resource-limited settings worldwide.
OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to assess individual clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on scabies for their quality, accessibility, and applicability; with special attention to health equity implications.
METHODS: A literature search was undertaken to identify CPGs published on scabies, covering publications from 01/01/2010 to 30/08/2025. The search included a manual review of each dermatological society recognised by the International League of Dermatological Societies, guideline deposit

Scabies, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, remains a major global health problem affecting both resource-poor and high-income regions. Despite the availability of effective treatments, treatment failure continues to pose a challenge to disease control and has become an increasingly recognized clinical and public-health concern. However, treatment failure is often attributed solely to drug resistance, overlooking the complex interplay of biological, clinical, behavioral, and environmental factors. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the multifactori

Ectoparasitoses are caused by organisms that parasitize their host's skin. They affect a considerable proportion of the global population, with a disproportionately greater burden in disadvantaged individuals and communities, although any human is susceptible. They are more prevalent in tropical climates. They can have a major impact on infected individuals' quality of life and on affected populations, and they can result in severe complications. Despite their contribution to the global burden of disease, ectoparasitoses remain largely neglected. Making their characteristics visible and unders

Background/Objectives: Scabies, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, is a recognised neglected disease of rising global burden, and increasing resistance to first-line scabicides is making treatment failure more frequent. No dermoscopic marker of cure has been validated for monitoring treatment response, so a reliable marker of active infestation is crucial. The tunnel window sign (TWS)-rounded perforations along the burrow, visible under polarised dermoscopy and ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD)-is a recently introduced candidate. We aimed to determine whether TWS represents a dermos

Background: Scabies is a World Health Organization-designated neglected tropical disease of rising incidence with increasingly reported treatment failure, making objective verification of cure important. Dermoscopy is well established for diagnosis, but its role in assessing treatment response has never been mapped. Objectives: To map how dermoscopy assesses treatment response in scabies-which markers, timepoints and cure definitions are applied, and how it relates to clinical and microscopic standards. Methods: A scoping review following PRISMA-ScR searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EBS

Disasters such as earthquakes create conditions that amplify the risk of ectoparasitic infestations due to overcrowding, disrupted sanitation, and limited hygiene resources. This study explores ectoparasite-related online search interests in Türkiye before and after the earthquakes of February 2023, offering insights into potential secondary health concerns during disaster recovery. Weekly Google Trends data on scabies, lice, bed bugs, ticks, and insect bites were extracted for Türkiye and its provinces. Relative search volumes (RSV) were analysed to compare two years pre- and post-earthquake

Ectoparasitoses, caused by infestations of highly contagious and ubiquitous parasites, include Pediculus humanus capitis (the head louse) and human scabies. These diseases affect many school-age children and are a major public health problem in low-income countries such as the Republic of Guinea. These parasites, such as lice, are known to be potential disease vectors. Given the lack of data on these conditions in Guinea, we conducted a nationwide epidemiological study to assess their prevalence in schools. In March 2023, 81 head lice were collected from 18 schoolgirls in the regions of Boké a

Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM) is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by zoonotic Ancylostomatidae larvae, mainly Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum, which infect dogs and cats. Humans are accidental hosts, acquiring infection when L3 larvae in contaminated soil penetrate the skin, producing serpiginous, pruritic lesions. We report a 24-year-old female from Quito, Ecuador, who developed a pruritic lesion on her right foot nine days after walking barefoot on wet, potentially fecally contaminated sand at Atacames Beach. Initial self-treatment with benzyl benzoate and herbal was

Only a few studies have reported the relationship between immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) and scabies. A 30-year-old homosexual man who lived in a dorm was diagnosed with AIDS based on his CD4 count: 10/μL, HIV-1 real-time PCR: 100000 copies/mL, and pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). Although he developed a rash on his face and back shortly before, it exacerbated rapidly, and a rise of eosinophils was noted in his blood after initiation of antiretroviral therapy. Initially, he was suspected of having IRIS of PCP with eosinophilia, but he was ultimately diagnosed with scabies, whi

Background/Objectives: Scabies is a disease that disproportionately affects young children. Oral ivermectin is a mainstay of scabies therapy, yet children <15 kg are excluded due to insufficient safety data and the lack of age-appropriate formulations. To address this gap, we developed CHILD-IVITAB, a 1 mg ivermectin orodispersible tablet based on the Template Inverted Particle technology, which enables rapid disintegration and intrinsic taste masking in a mechanically robust tablet. Methods: We report the pharmaceutical characterization of CHILD-IVITAB tablets. The EPIC-15 trial (NCT06404333)

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization identifies 21 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affecting millions globally. While their population burden is well recognised, less is known about the long-term trends in severe NTD-related morbidity requiring hospitalization. We analysed national trends and geographic patterns of hospitalizations attributed to NTDs in Ecuador between 2000 and 2024.
METHODS: We analysed hospital discharge data from Ecuador's national registry over a 25-year period. Age-standardized hospitalization rates were estimated, and temporal trends were assessed using Joinpoin

Background/Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the etiologic distribution of markedly elevated IgE (≥2000 IU/mL) and the association of parasitic infections with longitudinal IgE dynamics and National Institutes of Health Hyper-IgE Syndrome (NIH-HIES) score trajectories in pediatric patients. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 127 pediatric patients with IgE ≥2000 IU/mL and ≥1 year of longitudinal follow-up at a tertiary allergy clinic (2019-2024). The primary outcome was the IgE reduction percentage difference between parasitic and non-parasitic groups. Results: Atopic sensitization was identi

Glucocorticoids exert their therapeutic effects by broadly suppressing the activity of immune cells, thereby increasing the risk of infection. Although this risk is dose-dependent, a clinically meaningful increase in infection risk persists even at daily doses lower than 5 mg of prednisone equivalent. We herein report the first documented case of a patient who developed concurrent crusted scabies and Candida albicans infection following glucocorticoid therapy for bullous pemphigoid.
