A 10-Year Experience of Teledermatology in a Korean Correctional Facility: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Teledermatology offers a potential solution for providing dermatologic care in correctional facilities, where access to specialists is often limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of all live-interactive teledermatology consultations between the dermatology department of Busan Paik Hospital and Busan Correctional Facility from 2013 to 2023. Data were extracted from electronic medical records and included demographics, diagnostic categories, individual diagnoses, treatment outcomes, and follow-up rates. RESULTS: A total of 1,236 incarcerated patients (m

Infectious adverse events in patients treated with biotherapies in a tropical Amazonian context, French Guiana.

BACKGROUND: Data on infectious complications associated with biologic therapies in tropical settings are scarce. French Guiana, an Amazonian French overseas territory, combines an important burden of infectious diseases with a high use of biologic therapies. Our objective was to assess the incidence, spectrum, and risk factors for infections in patients treated with biotherapies for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases in French Guiana. METHODS: We performed a multicentre retrospective study of adult patients receiving biotherapies between January 2021 and December 2023 in the French Guiana U

Skin of Color in Pediatric Dermatology: A Cross-Sectional Retrospective Analysis Addressing Inclusive Diagnosis and Care.

Children with skin color (SOC) are underrepresented in dermatologic research, despite structural and functional differences that shape disease presentation. Atopic dermatitis (AD), one of the most common pediatric dermatoses, often appears differently in SOC than in white children. This study compared dermatologic conditions prompting Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) referral in SOC and white children, and described clinical features of AD in SOC. A retrospective study was performed at IRCCS AOUBO Policlinico di Sant'Orsola, Bologna, Italy, analyzing records and photographs from 2019. Pati

Mites, microbes, and neurodegeneration: A unified environmental hypothesis for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Lewy body dementia.

Emerging evidence suggests that various microbes and mites may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). The association between microbial exposure and these conditions raises the possibility that mites, as vectors or direct agents, could contribute to disease onset and progression. PD, with 15% or less of cases linked to genetics, highlights the importance of environmental factors in the remaining sporadic cases. Mites, known to harbor prions, suggest a potential mechanism

Making space for happenstance: a proposal for a different 'Theory of Change' to help understand and guide NTD policymaking practices.

BACKGROUND: Historically, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have received far less global attention than the ‘big three’ diseases of global health (HIV, TB, and malaria), reinforcing health inequities experienced by those affected. Policy advocacy has been a necessary part of the work of NTD specialists, including researchers. One commonly used tool to support planned change is Theory of Change (ToC), employed by organisations such as the World Health Organization, non-governmental organisations, and research funders, who often require ToC diagrams at proposal stage. However, ToC practices ca

Atopic Dermatitis in Children: Differential Diagnosis and Mimickers.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory dermatosis that is characterized by pruritus, xerosis, and age-dependent clinical heterogeneity. Accurately diagnosing AD remains challenging due to the absence of specific biomarkers and the broad spectrum of conditions that may mimic its presentation. A wide range of inflammatory, infectious, and genetic disorders resemble AD, including seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, scabies, dermatophytosis, and nummular eczema, as well as rare immunodeficiency and metabolic conditions. This review summarizes the

Chronic ear pruritus.

Chronic ear pruritus, itching of the ear that lasts longer than six weeks, is a common symptom with a wide differential diagnosis that can significantly impair the quality of life. It can arise from such primary dermatologic conditions as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and lupus erythematosus, as well as such infestations as scabies and pediculosis capitis. Otolaryngologic causes-for example, otomycosis, chronic otitis externa, and temporomandibular joint disorders-may also lead to chronic ear pruritus. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, hematologic

Persistent and Progressive Exfoliative Dermatitis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Exfoliative dermatitis, also known as erythroderma, represents an infrequent clinical presentation in emergency departments (ED) and often contributes to considerable diagnostic uncertainty. The differential diagnosis is broad, and the condition may arise from a wide variety of etiologies. We report a case of severe exfoliative dermatitis characterized by gradual progression and resistance to multiple therapeutic interventions over several weeks, ultimately resulting in significant systemic complications and marked hematological abnormalities. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old man pres

Erythrodermic crusted scabies-a diagnostic pitfall and mini-review: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Erythroderma is a severe dermatologic condition with a broad differential diagnosis encompassing inflammatory, drug-induced, neoplastic, and infectious etiologies. Scabies is the most common neglected tropical disease (NTD) and can manifest in two common forms: classic and crusted types. Although rare, crusted scabies is an important and frequently underrecognized cause of erythroderma (accounting for <0.5% of cases) that poses diagnostic challenges due to its clinical overlap with other dermatoses associated with erythroderma. CASE DESCRIPTION AND REVIEW: We report the case of

Management of Bullous Pemphigoid and Norwegian Scabies with Dupilumab Plus Ivermectin.

Bullous pemphigoid is a severe autoimmune blistering disease, and Norwegian scabies is a rare comorbidity. However, conventional treatment methods, such as systemic corticosteroids, carry a high risk in the treatment of elderly patients. Herein, this rare comorbidity is described in an elderly patient. After an initial induction treatment with a low-to-moderate dose of corticosteroid, this patient achieved complete remission with a combination therapy of dupilumab (a monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin-4/13 signaling pathway) and ivermectin. Therefore, the successful treatment of thi

Skin disease in the Eastern Cape (SKINSCAPE): a Global Psoriasis Atlas point prevalence study in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Eastern Cape is an under-resourced province and the poorest in South Africa, where little is known about the epidemiology of skin diseases. OBJECTIVES: To examine the nature and prevalence of skin diseases in two neighbouring rural villages in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional point prevalence study of skin diseases of residents (adults and children) in Mtyholo Dlova and Mdolomba villages in December 2023. Through house-to-house visits, we collected data on the households, participant demographics and skin diagnoses following clinical ski

Chronic eczematous eruptions of aging: a clinical practice review.

Chronic eczematous skin disorders that first appear in later life are poorly characterized, partly because existing terminology is inconsistent and often conflates morphologic descriptors with specific diagnoses. This review introduces chronic eczematous eruptions of aging (CEEsA) as an umbrella term, summarizes current knowledge on its epidemiology, etiologies, and clinical presentation, outlines best practices in management, and highlights gaps requiring further investigation. CEEsA frequently present as ill defined, intensely pruritic eruptions on the trunk and extensor limbs, are often ref

Infectious contamination of healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases represent a major component of biological hazards encountered by healthcare workers. Occupational exposure may occur through multiple transmission pathways including airborne particles, direct contact, contaminated environments, or blood exposure accidents. Understanding these mechanisms is essential to guide effective prevention strategies in healthcare settings. METHODS: This narrative review synthesises current epidemiological data and preventive recommendations regarding occupational infectious risks in healthcare and related professional environments. Beyond the standard: targeted reapplication in palmoplantar scabies of infants.

Infantile scabies can be challenging to treat because of behavioural and anatomical factors that reduce the efficacy of topical therapies. In this small prospective cohort study, there were 22 neonates and infants with persistent palmoplantar scabies. Patients were treated exclusively with permethrin 5% cream. All patients initially failed the standard regimen consisting of one full-body application, followed by a second -application after 7 days. In 1 group, 11 infants received an intensified regimen with 3 additional nights of targeted application to the hands and feet (intervention group),

Including patient experiences from online sources in guidelines: A natural language processing study on scabies.

OBJECTIVE: Including patients' experience-based knowledge in the development of clinical and public health guidelines has been shown to enhance the quality, relevance, and applicability of guidelines. However, the meaningful and methodologically sound inclusion of patient experiences remains a challenge. This study aimed to showcase the potential of NLP methods as an innovative tool for guideline development to gain insights into patients' experiential knowledge and to incorporate this into the guideline development process. METHODS: For the revision of the Dutch public health guideline for s

Field efficacy assessment of a combination of afoxolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel pamoate to treat dogs naturally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei.

Canine sarcoptic mange, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, is a highly contagious and intensely pruritic skin disease in dogs. It is prevalent worldwide and has zoonotic potential. Therefore, effective treatment is important to safeguard animal welfare and public health. The present clinical field study aimed to confirm the efficacy of NexGard® Plus, an oral combination of afoxolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel pamoate, in treating dogs naturally infested with S. scabiei. It was a blinded, randomised, single-centre, negative-controlled efficacy study. Twenty naturally infested dogs were allocated into

National control programs for scabies: Experiences from Fiji and Solomon Islands.

INTRODUCTION: The most recent World Health Organization roadmap for neglected tropical diseases sets a target for countries to control scabies through several interventions, including mass drug administration in endemic areas where prevalence is 10% or greater using oral ivermectin and topical scabicides. This report documents the experiences and lessons learned from the first two countries in the world, Fiji and Solomon Islands, to implement national ivermectin-based mass drug administration for scabies. By identifying key challenges, this article aims to inform the global community as effort

A cross-sectional study of the burden and risk factors of impetigo and scabies among children during conflict in the middle area of the Gaza strip.

Impetigo and scabies, highly contagious skin infections, proliferate in the overcrowded and unhygienic conditions exacerbated by conflict. This cross-sectional study analyzed the demographic, environmental, and WaSH-related determinants of these infections among children in the middle area of the Gaza strip during its humanitarian crisis. The study was conducted between July and November 2024. Participants were recruited through a mixed non-probability sampling strategy combining systematic screening in displacement shelters and consecutive recruitment from red crescent dermatology clinics.
