Epidemiological trends of Pediatric scabies in Central Anatolia: a retrospective analysis covering the period 2019-2023.

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation of ongoing public health concern. This retrospective, descriptive study analyzed the epidemiological trends, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes of pediatric scabies in a tertiary care setting in Ankara, covering both pre- and post-earthquake periods between September 2019 and December 2023. Among 848 patients, representing 25% of all parasitic infections, case numbers showed a steady increase over the four-year period. The majority of patients (95.8%) resided in Central Anatolia, and 49% reported symptomatic household contacts. Pruritus (9

Combined Oral Ivermectin and 5% Permethrin Cream to Treat Severe Scabies.

BACKGROUND: Severe scabies, a rare parasitic skin disease characterized by abundant skin mites, may be life-threatening and poses public health concerns worldwide. A combination of standard-dose oral ivermectin and topical scabicides is recommended for treatment. However, data from randomized clinical trials are lacking, and the probability of cure is uncertain. Ivermectin at higher doses has been effective in the treatment of some parasitic diseases. METHODS: We conducted a blinded randomized trial involving adults with severe scabies (i.e., profuse or crusted), as confirmed by parasitologic

Effective treatment of scabetic nodules with thalidomide: a 5-year retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: Scabetic nodules are a cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to scabies mites and their byproducts, often accompanied by persistent pruritus. These nodules remain a therapeutic challenge due to the lack of effective treatments. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the effectiveness and tolerance of thalidomide for genital scabetic nodules. METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of thalidomide treatment (50-200 mg/day for 2-3 consecutive weeks) in 38 male patients with genital nodular scabies who had previously been infested with scabies mites and were left with persistent pruri

Crusted scabies complicated by septic shock: a fatal case report with incidental detection of Sarcoptes scabiei DNA in peripheral blood.

Crusted scabies is a severe form of scabies characterized by massive mite burden and profound immune dysregulation. Secondary bacterial infection is common and may progress to sepsis with fatal outcomes. We report a fatal case of crusted scabies complicated by septic shock in a 58-year-old man with diabetes mellitus and chronic dermatitis. The patient presented with diffuse erythroderma, extensive hyperkeratotic crusts, and deep skin fissures, and several household members had similar pruritic skin lesions. Laboratory investigations revealed marked eosinophilia, extremely elevated serum immuno

Immunosuppressive traditional herbal remedies in Myanmar (Burma) as a potential trigger of severe crusted scabies.

We report the case of a woman in her 20s from rural Myanmar who developed severe crusted scabies following the prolonged use of unlabelled traditional herbal remedies for rheumatoid arthritis. While her joint symptoms improved, she developed a rapidly progressive, hyperkeratotic and pruritic rash. A clinical diagnosis of crusted scabies was made based on the characteristic morphology and evidence of uncomplicated scabies in household contacts. Treatment included a prolonged course of topical benzyl benzoate and environmental decontamination. Ivermectin was unavailable due to national supply ch

Bioinformatic analysis of the glutathione S-transferase gene family in Sarcoptes scabiei and protective immunity of Delta-class SsGSTd3 and SsGSTd5 in rabbits.

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are key detoxification enzymes and immune antigens in parasites. Sarcoptes scabiei has 14 GSTs in four subclasses (Delta, Mu, Kappa, Zeta), tandemly arranged in four chromosomes. Bioinformatic analysis revealed molecular weights of 22.28-43.73 kDa, isoelectric points of 4.90-8.70, and inter-subclass sequence similarity of 6.6%-21.03%. Transcriptomics and RT-qPCR showed consistent high expression of SsGSTd3, SsGSTd5, SsGSTm3, and SsGSTm4 across different host sources and stages. Since Delta GSTs are unique to S. scabiei, we expressed recombinant SsGSTd3 and SsG

Integrated in vitro and in vivo evaluation of ivermectin hydrogel formulation for management of scabies with pharmacological assessment.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites, posing a significant health risk, especially in poor, crowded settings. Existing treatments are facing challenges due to poor compliance and side effects, necessitating alternative therapies. Hydrogel formulations offer promise by enhancing drug release and bioavailability. This study tested a novel topical ivermectin (IVR) hydrogel for scabies, evaluating its effectiveness, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It also assessed treatment outcomes of skin structure and its effect on animal behavior and locomotor a

Immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis following scabies infestation in a child: a rare association.

Scabies, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, is a common parasitic infestation in tropical regions. Although primarily dermatological, it can rarely trigger systemic complications such as immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). A 14-year-old boy presented with bilateral pedal edema, facial puffiness, and reddish urine for one week. Examination revealed pruritic papular lesions over the interdigital spaces, and microscopy confirmed Sarcoptes scabiei infestation. Investigations showed nephrotic-range proteinuria (4.9 g/day), microscopic hematuria, and norma
