BACKGROUND: Hip resurfacing arthroplasty remains an appealing option for young and active patients1, but its use has declined because of technical challenges, risks of femoral neck notching, and adverse reactions associated with metal-on-metal bearings, raising concerns regarding long-term implant survival2. Accurate preparation of the femoral head and acetabulum is critical for successful outcomes3. In the present video article, we describe a reproducible technique utilizing preoperative 3D computed tomography (CT)-based planning and patient-specific 3D-printed jigs to optimize femoral head p

A 77-year-old, right-hand-dominant woman presented after a low-energy fall with dorsal displacement involving the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints of the right small finger, along with a volar plate avulsion fracture at the base of the middle phalanx. Closed reduction was performed without anesthesia, followed by static aluminum splinting and occupational therapy. At her two-month follow-up, she reported minimal pain, improved function, and maintained joint alignment. This case highlights successful conservative management of a rare double interphalangeal dislocation with associated

Recovery after distal radius fracture surgery is commonly evaluated using physical function measures; however, actual upper limb use in daily life may not be fully captured by these assessments. In this case report, a postoperative distal radius fracture patient was monitored during hospitalization using a ring-shaped wearable device to quantitatively assess finger and upper limb usage, together with patient-reported outcomes and physical function measures. Finger and upper limb usage ratios increased during the mid-postoperative period, accompanied by reductions in swelling and improvements i

Hydrogels have been widely used in flexible electronics due to their water content similar to that of muscles and other biological tissues. However, it was a challenge to significantly improve mechanical robustness and electrical conductivity owing to their trade-off. To address this, a synergistic method of freeze casting and hot pressing was proposed to create a multiscale hierarchical structure in the hydrogel. In detail, the mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was freeze-cast and freeze-dried, then hot-pressed to enhan

Introduction Hand fractures in ice hockey players have the potential to profoundly impact performance, but the associations between specific fracture characteristics and performance have yet to be quantified. The objective of this study is to assess the rates of hand fractures in the National Hockey League (NHL) over the past 25 years and determine the impact of fracture site and laterality on return to skate (RTS), games missed, performance, and time on ice (TOI) after injury. Methods Carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal fractures sustained by active players were retrospectively collected from

Hydrogel-based strain sensors (HSSs) hold great promise for flexible and wearable electronics owing to their low modulus, excellent biocompatibility, and strong adhesiveness. However, conventional HSSs typically rely on costly, nonrenewable, and poorly biocompatible conductive fillers. To address this challenge, this study proposes a "hydrothermal coordination‑carbonization" strategy. By doping copper ions into industrial by-product lignosulfonate (LS) molecules to regulate their aggregate structure, highly conductive copper nanoparticle-doped hydroxylated LS-derived nanobiochar (Cu@HLSC) is s

Supracondylar humerus fractures are among the most common paediatric injuries. Although neurologic complications are often seen in these fractures, iatrogenic nerve injuries following closed reduction and percutaneous pinning remain relatively uncommon. Radial nerve palsy is particularly rare in this context, and most cases represent neuropraxic injuries that recover spontaneously. This report describes a rare case of iatrogenic high radial nerve palsy following closed reduction and K-wire fixation of a comminuted supracondylar humerus fracture in a child, with complete functional recovery und

BACKGROUND: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is characterized by pain related to exercise that resolves with a period of rest. Along with these symptoms, CECS is commonly diagnosed based on an increase in intercompartmental pressure during exercise. A negative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is helpful to rule out commonly presenting symptoms. While fasciotomy remains the gold standard for patients who require more than conservative treatment, sex-specific outcome data require further investigation.
INDICATIONS: This case presents a 17-year-old female adolescent with a 2-year h

Alpine skiing is associated with characteristic patterns of hand and wrist trauma, which together account for approximately 11% of all injuries in this sport. These injuries typically result from high-velocity falls, pole-related mechanisms, and collisions with infrastructure, including lift pylons and barriers. This review provides an overview of common hand and wrist injuries in alpine skiers, with emphasis on skiing-specific mechanisms, characteristic imaging findings, strengths and limitations of different imaging modalities, as well as clinically relevant implications. Although some of th

Finger pulp infections commonly occur due to bacteria entering through wounds. Foreign body-related pulp infections are uncommon and can present atypically. In this rare case, infection occurred due to a retained cement bead, which was surgically implanted for treating a compound, comminuted distal phalanx fracture with bone loss. A 22-year-old woman presented with persistent swelling, dull pain, and discharge from the pulp of the right middle finger for three months, unresponsive to empirical antibiotic therapy. Examination revealed localized swelling, tenderness with a puncture wound, and pu

BACKGROUND: No international consensus regarding optimal non-surgical or surgical treatment of metacarpal fractures exists. Surgical outcome using patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) from national registers with large surgically treated population have rarely been reported. We present demographics and patient-reported outcomes in relation to fixation methods for surgically treated metacarpal fractures, using data from the Swedish National Quality Registry for Hand Surgery (HAKIR).
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of a prospective collected dataset, patients aged ≥ 18 years with

Fractures of the thumb encompass a diverse spectrum of injury patterns, each requiring nuanced consideration of various treatment strategies. Associated conditions include injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament and radial collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint, which can significantly impact thumb stability and function. Although extra-articular fractures of the thumb metacarpal and phalanges are more tolerant of residual deformity due to compensatory movement of the carpometacarpal joint, intra-articular fractures, including Bennett and Rolando fractures, often benefit from s

Arthrodesis with a locking plate is widely used for thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. However, complications such as nonunion and plate fracture remain a concern. Although clinical studies suggest that an oblique screw reduces the complication rate, its mechanical effect and an optimal insertion method remain unclear. We aimed to quantify the oblique screw's biomechanical effect with finite element (FE) analysis. A FE model of thumb arthrodesis was constructed using a CT-based bone model and three plate designs. For each plate, models with and without an oblique screw were tested under thr

PURPOSE: Decreased Medicare reimbursement rates have been observed in many surgical subspecialties, which can negatively impact access and sustainability of care. While several studies report decreased reimbursement for hand surgery procedures, none have accounted for changes in case volume.
METHODS: The CMS Physician and Other Practitioners database was used to extract all procedure codes billed to Medicare Part B by hand surgeons. The Medicare Physician Fee Schedule database was used to collect reimbursement information, and reimbursement trends were weighted by procedure volume.
RESULTS:

Boutonniere deformity results from damage to the central band and structures stabilizing the finger's extensor apparatus, leading to flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint and hyperextension of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Untreated or delayed diagnosis of boutonniere deformity results in progression of both deformity and degenerative changes in the PIP joint. In advanced, chronic deformities (Burton IV), surgical treatment includes arthrodesis or PIP joint replacement. In the presented case, a 29-year-old right-handed man presented with a persistent boutonniere deformi

Volkmann ischemic contracture is a severe and largely preventable complication of untreated or delayed compartment syndrome. In children, it is most commonly associated with supracondylar humerus fractures, especially when external compression from casts or splints is not promptly recognized. We report the case of a six-and-a-half-year-old right-handed girl who developed severe left upper-limb dysfunction after a closed supracondylar humerus fracture treated in a rural setting with tight traditional splint immobilization, locally known as "Jbira." No fasciotomy was performed during the acute p

Pelvic digit is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a finger-like bony structure near the pelvic bone, often discovered incidentally on imaging. Although typically asymptomatic, it may mimic other pathologies when symptoms arise. We report two cases: Case A involved a 14-year-old boy with post-traumatic foot pain, where imaging revealed a pelvic digit initially suspected to be an avulsion fracture; and Case B concerned a 40-year-old man with unrelated back pain, in whom the pelvic digit was found incidentally during imaging workup. In both cases, computed tomography and magnetic resonan

Open distal phalanx fractures with nail-bed injury require prompt treatment of both the fracture and the nail-unit soft tissues. Kirschner-wire fixation is commonly used when an unstable fracture requires stabilization, but operating-room access and fluoroscopy may be delayed or unavailable in high-volume or resource-constrained emergency settings. Published series suggest that hypodermic-needle fixation can be an alternative in selected distal phalanx fractures, although the evidence remains limited. A 49-year-old man with hearing impairment sustained a door-crush injury to the dominant left

Radial head subluxation, commonly known as nursemaid's elbow, is a frequent upper extremity injury in young children and typically presents with refusal to use the affected arm without focal distal motor dysfunction. We report an atypical presentation in a previously healthy two-year-and-10-month-old girl who was brought to the emergency department after an unwitnessed event with no clearly identified mechanism of trauma. She held her right elbow flexed against her chest in a posture suggestive of radial head subluxation, and additionally refused to let go of her wrist and demonstrated a wrist

CASE: A 49-year-old woman presented after a leash-pulling injury with ring and small finger proximal phalanx fractures. Pain and supination of the long finger metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint were noted without collateral ligament injury on examination or imaging. Surgical exploration noted isolated capsular avulsion, which was repaired with restoration of alignment and full range of motion with relief of pain and instability at 1-year follow-up.
CONCLUSION: This is a unique case of isolated finger MCP capsular injury causing rotatory instability. Surgeons should consider exploration and repai
