Oculo-dento-digital syndrome (SODD) as defined by Meyer-Schwickerath in 1957 is a rare entity (84 cases) which belongs to ectodermal dysplasias. It consists of: the characteristic features (long face, pinched nose); syndactyly; ocular, dental and bone abnormalities. This entity is usually transmitted on the autosomal dominant mode. We complied a case series involving 556 employed patients who sustained unilateral hand fractures requiring open reduction and internal fixation and a modification of their normal work activities and schedules. We report two siblings with bowed tibia, hypoplastic thumbs, multiple fractures, a distinctive facial phenotype and developmental delay. These children share some features with other cases reported in the literature but we consider that they represent a new syndrome.

It is important to obtain a history of prior injury during the assessment because treatment and prognosis may be very different. Delayed treatment often yields an inferior result and lost time. Osteogenesis imperfecta and skin fragility occurred in about 50 New Zealand Romney lambs born in a flock of 450 ewes. Affected lambs had soft bones and multiple intrauterine bone fractures. An unusual case of Mycobacterium marinum cutaneous infection is described. As a result of marked delay in the diagnosis, extensive local inflammation and destructive osteomyelitis occurred together with cutaneous dissemination in an immunocompetent host. Case notes of 20 patients who presented with grinding machine injury to the hand from April 1984 to March 1990 were analysed for pattern of injury, method of management and outcome of treatment. Gymnast and injury information on 178 competitive female gymnasts was collected through questionnaires and interviews in a 3-year prospective epidemiologic study. The injury rate was 30/100 gymnasts/year, .52 injuries/1000 h. Injury rates excluding risk exposure increased with competitive level, but the top level gymnasts had the lowest rate per 1000 h of practice. During a 9-year period, we treated 13 patients with major fractures of bones of the distal carpal row creating instability of the corresponding carpometacarpal joints. Diagnosis of the injury was made early in only eight patients whose treatment consisted of open reduction, pin or screw fixation, and immobilization from 6 to 8 weeks. They showed no complications and had an excellent functional recovery. Diagnosis in five (38%) patients was delayed 1 week to 8 months after the accident. At initial presentation, symptoms included pain, loss of grip strength, and mild limitation of finger motion.

A review of all cases of operative hand surgery at The Adelaide Children's Hospital during the period January 1-June 30, 1988 yielded 38 cases that resulted from trauma (burns and fractures excluded). Lacerations from uncapped galvanized-iron fences occurred in 10 patients.
