The emergence of xylazine-associated wounds, highlighted by case reports from Philadelphia in 2022, has been linked to the use of this veterinary sedative as an adulterant in the unregulated drug supply and has brought renewed attention to the challenges of complex wound management, particularly in vulnerable populations. Among these challenges are unusual infectious complications, including cases of larva-associated infections such as Ignatzschineria bacteremia in maggot-colonized wounds, raising critical questions about the role of environmental exposure, wound neglect, and the presence of m

PURPOSE: Calliphorid flies commonly cause traumatic myiasis in sheep, which refers to the parasitic infestation by fly larvae in living vertebrate tissues and hence poses a great threat to the well-being of vertebrates. In the present study, surveys were carried out in different regions of the Kashmir Himalaya to document the incidence and prevalence caused by myiasis in sheep.
METHODS: Seasonal surveys were conducted at the selected study locations, especially in the areas with a high density of nomadic herding. The wounds of the sheep were examined for the presence of calliphorid larvae. Th

INTRODUCTION: Blast injuries to the lower extremities often result in extensive soft tissue damage and are prone to complications such as infection and, rarely, maggot infestation. These challenges can jeopardize limb salvage, especially in resource-limited settings. We report a successfully managed case of a neglected anterior ankle blast wound complicated by infection and myiasis, treated with a multidisciplinary approach incorporating sunlight exposure and a cross-leg flap.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman presented with a 20-day-old anterior ankle blast injury complicated by infecti

This study aims to assess the current situation of the main nasal bot flies (Cephenemyia stimulator and Oestrus ovis) affecting roe deer in Spain and to identify the factors influencing their spread. Between 2018 and 2025, 1600 roe deer heads were examined. The overall prevalence of C. stimulator was 39.9% (CI 95% 37.5-42.3), with a mean larval intensity of 44.1 (SD 71.99). In contrast, a low mean larval burden of O. ovis (2.6; SD 1.90) was found in 1.6% of the animals (CI 95% 1.0-2.3). Our findings revealed the first case of mixed myiasis caused by both oestrids. Roe deer abundance was the ma

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation, either accidental or obligatory, that affects animals and humans and is caused by the larvae of flies, also known as maggots. Nasal myiasis is more commonly encountered in tropical and subtropical regions. We report the case of a five-year-old child with cerebral palsy residing in a rural area, with a history of contact with dogs and sheep, who was admitted to the otorhinolaryngology department after his parents noticed several larvae in his right nostril for the past two days. Clinical examination revealed maggots in the right nostril, while the nasopharynx

BACKGROUND: Human nasal myiasis is a rare zoonotic infection caused by Oestrus ovis with a non-specific clinical presentation that can mimic more common conditions such as allergic rhinitis.
OBJECTIVE: To report a series of nasal myiasis cases in immunocompetent individuals, emphasizing the clinical presentation and complementary investigations (endoscopic findings, parasitological identification, skin prick tests, and imaging studies) that facilitate differential diagnosis from allergic rhinitis and enable early treatment.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including cases of nasal

This report presents two cases of human infection caused by Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica, a pathogen associated with chronic osteomyelitis and soft tissue infections. Case 1 involves a 75-year-old male with a long-standing, chronic wound following a right lower leg fracture, which worsened due to inappropriate treatments like "moxibustion" and leech therapy, leading to a severe infection. Despite initial antibiotic therapy with cefoxitin sodium, the infection progressed, resulting in amputation. Case 2 describes a patient with a refractory right plantar ulcer complicated by calcaneal osteo

Acute balanoposthitis is a common inflammatory condition in children, typically caused by infectious agents. Penile infestation by fly larvae is an extremely rare etiology, imposing difficulty with diagnosis and treatment in endemic areas. We describe the case of severe acute balanoposthitis in a toddler from Ambo town, Ethiopia, as a result of myiasis caused by tumbu fly larva. The larva was completely removed, and circumcision was done. This instance emphasizes how crucial it is to take myiasis into account in the differential of balanoposthitis in endemic areas.

Medicolegal entomology, once primarily utilized for estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI), now serves an expanding role in evaluating abuse and neglect in vulnerable populations. This case study examines a pivotal 2022 ruling by the Busan District Court, where forensic entomological evidence led to a conviction for negligent homicide by abandonment. The victim, an 82-year-old woman with dementia and multiple chronic conditions, was discovered in a severely unsanitary environment. Numerous third-instar larvae of Lucilia sericata were retrieved from necrotic pressure ulcers, and developmenta

Tracheostomal myiasis, the infestation of a tracheostomy site by fly larvae, is an uncommon and challenging condition, with limited cases reported in the medical literature. This case report aims to describe both the clinical presentation and management of tracheostomal myiasis in a patient with multiple comorbidities. The patient presented with foul-smelling discharge and visible maggots at the tracheostomy site. Management involved manual removal of larvae, surgical debridement, irrigation with iodine solution, and sealing the stoma with paraffin ointment. This case highlights the need for c

The screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a significant pest in Brazil, posing threats to agriculture and public health. Laboratory rearing is crucial for developing control strategies like the sterile insect technique (SIT); but the effects of multi-generational rearing on the fly's biological parameters are not fully understood. This study investigated the impact of rearing C. hominivorax for 12 inbred generations on its morphometrics, reproductive capacity, and life expectancy. Specimens were collected at distinct developmental stages across 12 generations for morphometric analysis, an

Lucilia sericata, a dipteran fly, causes myiasis by infesting living or necrotic tissues and transmits mycobacterial infections to livestock. Its potential resistance to common insecticides underscores the need for integrated pest management strategies and highlights the importance of biopesticides. In this context, larvicidal effects of Citrus sinensis, Cymbopogon flexuosus, Achillea millefolium, Origanum onites, Salvia fruticosa, and Mentha piperita essential oils and biocapsulated ZnO nanoparticles were investigated to control Lucilia sericata vectors. Synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were cha

The evolutionary transition to parasitism in the family Calliphoridae serves as a compelling model to study the genetic and molecular basis of ecological adaptations. In this study, we sequenced and annotated the genomes of Chrysomya megacephala, Chrysomya putoria, and Lucilia eximia to provide a foundation to investigate the evolution of coding and non-coding sequences within the family Calliphoridae. Combining these new resources with publicly available genomes from 11 representatives of the family, we focused on two species with distinct parasitic strategies, Cochliomyia hominivorax -a fles

Sarcophaga princeps Wiedemann, 1830 (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a species widely distributed in the Oriental and parts of the Palearctic regions. Documented cases have reported its colonization of human corpses and association with livestock myiasis, highlighting its significant value in forensic and medical research. However, current methods for estimating the intra-puparial age of S. princeps, which accounts for more than half of the entire immature stage, remain lacking. In this study, pupae were sampled at four constant temperatures (16, 22, 28, and 34 °C), and intra-puparial morphological

Myiasis, a condition stemming from the parasitic infestation of Diptera fly larvae, constitutes a complication for cancer patients, particularly those with malignant skin wounds. The factors that contribute to myiasis include old age, inadequate hygiene, poor living conditions, vascular disease, and diabetes. Cases of myiasis in neoplastic wounds in the head and neck region are rare and guidelines or recommendations regarding the best treatment approach remain lacking. Herein, we describe a case of myiasis that developed into an extensive squamous cell carcinoma of the lip in an older male adu
