BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis, one of the most frequently diagnosed myiasis types, is defined as skin or soft tissue on a living host infested by dipterous larvae (maggots). However, bibliometric analysis of this disease remains sparse. Machine learning techniques and updated publications provide an opportunity for such an investigation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the studies were retrieved from PubMed and were processed using R software in the bibliometric analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling. Furthermore, the clinical management of two diabetes patients with serious

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a challenge for treatment. It is also a risk factor for unintended infestation with Diptera larvae (maggots) known as myiasis. We describe a rare case of cutaneous myiasis located on a giant SCC of the face in an elderly female. Myiasis coupled with malignant skin conditions provides a unique surgical challenge as it is associated with a significantly increased risk of complications and mortalities. A literature review using PUBMED revealed 15 cases of SCC-associated myiasis due to different species. It is not only a disease of older age, as two of the

A pediatric patient presented to the emergency department with ambiguous scalp lesions following recent travel to a tropical region. Despite a prompt physical examination and subsequent laboratory investigations, a definitive diagnosis could not be established. An experienced ultrasound radiologist from our team was consulted to assist in the diagnostic process using ultrasound imaging. The ultrasound revealed the presence of subcutaneous larvae, confirming a diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis, which had initially mimicked a more common dermatological condition. This case highlights the valuable r

Breech strike is a major parasitic problem affecting wool-producing sheep. While skin wrinkles and fecal soiling are recognized risk factors, much of the difference in susceptibility between individual sheep remains unexplained. This study compared the early immune response of 3-year-old Merino ewes genetically selected to be resistant to breech strike to that of the non-selected ewes following a brief Lucilia cuprina larval challenge. Fourteen sheep (seven breech strike resistant and seven non-selected sheep) were challenged with L. cuprina eggs at four random sites on their back. Skin biopsi

We report the case of a 50-year-old Hispanic man with recent travel to El Salvador, who developed two painful nodules on his right lower extremity following a fishing trip. Upon medical evaluation, the nodules were diagnosed as cutaneous myiasis, likely caused by Dermatobia hominis. Videos demonstrating a minimally traumatic larval extraction technique are included. This case underscores the importance of considering myiasis in the differential diagnosis of painful skin nodules in returning travelers and highlights an effective removal method.

BACKGROUND: Flystrike (cutaneous myiasis) is caused by blowfly larvae of the genus Lucilia. This disease is a major obstacle to sustainable global sheep and wool production. Flystrike control relies primarily on breech modification surgery (mulesing) and insecticidal treatment; however, control is constantly compromised by the emergence and spread of insecticide-resistance. Preventing the spread of resistance is severely hindered by a limited understanding of genetic variation, structure and gene flow within and among Lucilia populations. Australia is one of the world's largest producers of sh

BACKGROUND: Furuncular myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae in the skin, typically presenting as painful, inflammatory nodules. In the United States, the most common causative agent is Dermatobia hominis (human botfly), though autochthonous cases are exceedingly rare. These are caused by the rodent botfly Cuterebra, which is endemic to North America. Humans are incidental hosts, often through outdoor activities near rodent burrows. Diagnosis can be challenging, as it may resemble more common conditions such as an abscess or cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is an ectoparasitic disease caused by fly larvae. In non-endemic regions it is rare, often unfamiliar to clinicians and readily misdiagnosed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old Serbian traveller developed painful furuncular lesions on the thigh after returning from Kenya. The lesions were initially treated as insect bites with intramuscular corticosteroid, antihistamines and topical betamethasone-gentamicin. Spontaneous expulsion of a larva led to the recognition of myiasis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Three third-instar (L3) larvae were surgically removed. Morphological

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larvae of dipteran flies, affecting living or necrotic tissues in humans and animals. It is classified into obligatory and facultative forms, depending on the relationship between the parasite and the host. Clinically, myiasis may present as cutaneous, wound, cavity, intestinal, urogenital, or blood-feeding larval infestations. Diagnosis is based on the characteristic clinical presentation, with definitive identification provided by a parasitological examination of the larvae. Treatment involves the mechanical removal of the larvae and appropria

The tapeworms Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis cause two different clinical manifestations in humans: cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE), respectively. Both forms of echinococcosis manifest primarily in the liver, while other organs or tissues are less frequently affected. Simultaneous occurrence of CE and AE is extremely rare, and all previously reported patients exhibited affected livers, while simultaneous infection without liver involvement has not yet been described. Herein, we present an exclusively extrahepatic E. granulosus and E. multilo

Zoonotic pathogens such as arboviruses, arenaviruses, filoviruses, coronaviruses, highly pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) viruses, vesiculoviruses, and many others are emerging and reemerging worldwide, jeopardizing global veterinary and public health. Parasitic diseases such as visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis (Trypanosoma cruzi), myiasis, and river blindness (Onchocerca volvulus) are also paramount for public health in the Americas and elsewhere. In the fall 2024, a group of experts convened in Chiapas, Mexico, for the Fourth Mesoamerican Symposium "Dr. Roberto Navarr

Neuroparasitic infections are caused by a variety of organisms that affect the central nervous system (CNS). Given the increasing rates of international travel, climate change, and immunosuppression, neuroparasitic diseases represent a major global health concern. Accurate diagnosis relies on non-invasive medical imaging combined with exposure history and laboratory testing. Timely institution of appropriate therapy can drastically improve patient outcomes. This article represents an international collaboration of radiologists on multiple continents to illustrate exemplary radiologic cases and

Otomysis is the infestation of human ears with dipterous larvae. It is a rare medical issue, primarily observed in individuals with underlying vulnerabilities residing in tropical and subtropical regions. A 56-year-old farmer, with a history of chronic otitis media, presented to our emergency department for otalgia and pruritus of the right ear. Otoscopic examination revealed numerous whitish larvae. Management was based on abundant irrigation using saline solution Otomyiasis is a rare disease that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with unexplained otolo

Mastoid cavity myiasis is a rare but important differential diagnosis. While otomyiasis mainly occurs in tropical regions, it is a diagnosis in patients with a history of radical mastoidectomy presenting with otalgia or otorrhea, particularly in those with diabetes or poor hygiene. Prompt mechanical removal of larvae combined with antiseptic irrigation and systemic antibiotics is an effective and sufficient treatment, typically preventing recurrence or complications.

Coccidioidomycosis is predominantly a pulmonary disease, however dissemination can include unique cutaneous presentations. We report a previously healthy 11-year-old female with delayed diagnosis of cutaneous scalp coccidioidomycosis with disseminated disease with secondary wound myiasis and bacterial superinfection. She required extensive surgical debridement, eventually requiring a skin graft and prolonged hospitalization for antifungal therapy, experiencing a unique adverse effect.

The term "myiasis" refers to the parasitic infestation by fly maggots in human tissue. Although cutaneous involvement is well documented, anorectal myiasis is exceedingly rare, particularly when caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax, The New World screwworm fly. We present the case of a 55-year-old male septic tank worker from a rural northern community of Honduras. The patient presented with hyperglycemia, perianal pain, discharge, and prolapsed hemorrhoids. Upon admission, an early evaluation led to a new diagnosis of diabetes type II. We arranged a surgical exploration in the operating theater
