A Comparative Analysis of the Responses of Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macqart) (Calliphoridae) to Different Reflectance Levels of Green and Yellow Light Hues.

Proximate visual cues play a crucial role for flies (Order: Diptera) in locating suitable foraging and oviposition sites. This study examined the behavioural responses of two sheep myiasis-causing blowfly species in Australia, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), to six different reflectance levels of green and yellow hues. Both species were influenced primarily by reflectance intensity and proximity to the light source. Lucilia cuprina displayed a nonsignificant preference for moderate yellow (p = 0.25), whereas Ch. rufifacies showed a significant attraction to mod

Neglected Myiasis Wound Presenting With Septic Shock: A Case Report.

Myiasis is larval infestation of tissues, particularly common in tropical, and subtropical regions, especially in pre-existing wounds. Poor hygiene, inadequate wound care, and exposed wounds, can predispose to secondary bacterial infection. We report a case of neglected myiasis wound in a laborer from rural Nepal presenting with septic shock, who was managed with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, wound care, and delayed skin grafting, resulting in complete functional recovery.

Advanced Periorbital Squamous Cell Carcinoma Complicated by Extensive Facial Myiasis in a Homeless Patient: A Case Report.

Facial myiasis is an uncommon but severe complication associated with neglected malignant lesions, particularly in socially vulnerable patients. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the facial region may exhibit aggressive local behavior when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. The authors report a rare case of extensive facial myiasis associated with infiltrative periorbital SCC in a homeless patient. A 57-year-old man presented with a large ulcerated periorbital lesion and active infestation. Emergency management included blood transfusion, systemic ivermectin, and surgical debridement with mec

Critical care, surgical management, xenotransfusion, and long-term monitoring in a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) with severe traumatic injury.

This case report describes the advanced critical care, surgical management, and one-year outcome of a free-ranging adult male maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) presenting with severe polytrauma and concomitant renal dioctophymosis. The animal was rescued with a severely contaminated open tibial fracture associated with extensive soft tissue necrosis and active myiasis, rendering limb-sparing procedures unfeasible. A high pelvic limb amputation was therefore performed as a life-saving intervention. Diagnostic imaging and ultrasonography revealed extensive destruction of the right kidney caused

Ultrastructure of mouthpart and terminalia in Musca crassirostris (Diptera: Muscidae) with molecular confirmation from Thailand.

Musca crassirostris Stein, 1903 (Diptera: Muscidae) is a medically and veterinary important hematophagous fly whose feeding activity causes significant irritation and blood loss in livestock and is occasionally associated with human myiasis. Although this species is widely distributed and epidemiologically relevant, its feeding-related functional morphology and genital diagnostic characters have remained insufficiently documented at the ultrastructural level. Here, we present the first comprehensive scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based characterization of the labellar feeding apparatus and

Biological reinvasion of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Mexico: impacts and risks under different climate change scenarios.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an obligate parasitic fly that causes severe myiasis in livestock, wildlife, and humans, generating substantial economic and public health impacts. Following its historical eradication from North and Central America through sterile insect technique (SIT) programs, recent outbreaks in Central America and southern Mexico indicate ongoing biological reinvasion. We evaluated current and future environmental suitability for C. hominivorax using ecological niche modeling (Maximum Entropy [MaxEnt]) calibrated with 1,972 occ

Complement, coagulation and NET pathway activation underlies early host response to blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Blowfly strike (myiasis), caused mainly by Lucilia spp., poses a serious animal welfare concern and results in substantial economic losses to the global sheep industry. However, the early molecular and proteomic responses of sheep skin to larval infestation are not well characterised. METHODS: The early proteomic response in sheep skin following infestation by blowfly Lucilia cuprina larvae was assessed in 14 Merino ewes, 7 from a group selected for breech strike resistance and 7 from a non-selected group. Control sites were also established using mock dental plugs without blowfly

Landscape genetics of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae): predicting dispersal pathways and expansion potential after reintroduction.

The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an obligate parasitic blowfly that causes traumatic myiasis and represents a major threat to livestock production in the Neotropics. Although eradication programs based on the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) successfully eliminated the species from North and Central America, the risk of reinvasion remains a persistent concern. Understanding how landscape structure influences dispersal and connectivity is therefore essential for improving surveillance and control strategies. We evaluated the influe

Standardization of an in vitro test for doramectin, fipronil, chlorpyrifos, and fluralaner against Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858) is the main etiological agent of myiasis in Latin America. In vitro bioassays are essential for detecting insecticide resistance development in the laboratory. This study evaluated different in vitro bioassay methodologies targeting C. hominivorax third-instar larvae. Chlorpyrifos, fipronil, fluralaner, and doramectin, were tested using either a filter paper assay or larval immersion for three different durations. In the filter paper assays, 9 concentrations of each active ingredient were applied to filter paper discs. After drying, the discs were place

Integrative revision of the Australian carrion-breeding Calliphorinae (Diptera: Calliphoridae): Revision of the Calliphora stygia- and ochracea-groups.

The Australian carrion-breeding species of the blowfly subfamily Calliphorinae, collectively placed in the Calliphora stygia- and ochracea-group sensu Johnston, Szpila, et al., 2025, play crucial roles in forensic science and agriculture, serving as key indicators of time since death of corpses and facultative agents of myiasis in livestock. Additionally, carrion-breeding blowflies have growing relevance in biomedical research due to their application in maggot debridement therapy and their emerging potential as sources of novel therapeutic compounds. Despite this recognised importance, the Au

Molecular Recognition of Odorant-Binding Proteins WmagOBP39280 and WmagOBP42531 to Wohlfahrtia magnifica Pheromones and Bactrian Camel Volatiles.

Wohlfahrtia magnifica, a worldwide pest, causes myiasis in many domestic animals. Its pheromones and volatiles from Bactrian camels were reported to attract or repel W. magnifica, but the molecular mechanisms are still unclear. A small protein in the insect olfactory system, called odorant binding protein (OBP), plays a crucial role in odor reception. In this study, two W. magnifica odorant-binding proteins (WmagOBPs) genes, WmagOBP42531 and WmagOBP39280, were cloned from the antennae of W. magnifica, and then expressed and purified by prokaryotic expression. Fluorescence binding assays demons

Advancing the sterile insect technique for the New World screwworm fly: the case for CRISPR-engineered genetic sexing strains.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) has long been a cornerstone of area-wide integrated pest management programs, and the eradication of the New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) from North and Central America is widely regarded as a landmark success. However, its resurgence underscores the need to modernize SIT strategies against this devastating pest. The development of genetic sexing strains (GSS) is a revolutionary idea supporting SIT, enabling efficient large-scale separation and the exclusive release of sterile males. Despite GSSs having been shown to significantly enhanc
