OBJECTIVE: To provide a strong foundation for the use of high-intensity laser therapy in carpel tunnel syndrome, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the outcomes of short- and long-term follow-up studies.
DESIGN: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Sample sizes of included studies ranged from 16 to 98 patients ( N = 308). Overall, a significant difference between the treatment and control groups were found across majority of the measures. Studies using a 4-wk follow-up period, however, only found significantly greater benefits for high-intens

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a debilitating condition that can cause significant morbidity. Corticosteroid injection (CI) is a popular treatment for CTS. Short-term benefits of CI for CTS have been reported, but there is little evidence on long-term outcomes. We performed a systematic review in the PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases to identify studies which reported outcomes of CI for CTS with at least 1-year follow-up. We identified 20 total studies and extracted data on outcomes such as number of patients needing eventual surgery or reinjection, complications, and functional s

Transactional data from point-of-sales systems may not consider customer behavior before purchasing decisions are finalized. A smart shelf system would be able to provide additional data for retail analytics. In previous works, the conventional approach has involved customers standing directly in front of products on a shelf. Data from instances where customers deviated from this convention, referred to as "cross-location", were typically omitted. However, recognizing instances of cross-location is crucial when contextualizing multi-person and multi-product tracking for real-world scenarios. T

Background: Dynamic forces acting on the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) may influence the mechanics of the carpal tunnel (CT), thus affecting the occurrence of CT syndrome (CTS). Previous studies demonstrated an association between muscle overlying the CT and the diagnosis of CTS. Understanding the location of insertion/origin of the thenar musculature will allow mechanical analysis of the forces applied to the TCL during performance of individual tasks. Our purpose was to determine the location of muscle overlying the CT on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in CTS and controls. Methods: Case

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) is positively correlated with the frequency of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, there are different types of obesity, and the localization of adipose tissue differs between the genders. In this study, we purposed to investigate whether there was an association between the amount of local adipose tissue thickness and anthropometry in upper extremity with the presence and/or electrophysiological severity of CTS on both genders.
METHODS: Our study included 150 patients who were diagnosed with CTS clinically and electrophysiologically and 165 he

In up to 2% of the population, benign tumours called lipomas can develop. When they are more than 5 cm, they are considered giant lipomas. Giant lipomas of the distal forearm and hand may cause compression to the underlying tissues, nerves and muscles, even though they are typically asymptomatic. An older woman with soft tissue swelling in her right wrist and forearm, and numbness and pain in her right hand presented to the general surgery outpatient clinic. Her numb fingers indicated that the median nerve was compressed, and an MRI scan of her wrist and forearm revealed median nerve compressi

Symptomatic bowstringing of digital flexor tendons is a rare complication of carpal tunnel release (CTR). Two weeks after open CTR, a 47-year-old man with severe carpal tunnel syndrome had relief of his preoperative median paresthesia but complained of new-onset painful snapping of the wrist and transient ulnar paresthesia occurring with wrist dorsiflexion and concomitant digital flexion. Physical examination localized the audible snapping to the hook of hamate (HOH) where manual pressure eliminated the wrist motion-induced snapping and the associated ulnar paresthesia. Wrist radiographs showe

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common disorder caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, resulting in pain and numbness throughout the hand and forearm. While multiple behavioural and physiological factors influence CTS risk, a growing body of evidence supports a strong genetic contribution. Recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) efforts have reported 53 independent signals associated with CTS. While GWAS can identify genetic loci conferring risk, it does not determine which cell types drive the genetic aetiology of the trait, which variants are "causal" at a

Symptoms in people with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are traditionally attributed to neural tissue, but recent studies suggest that the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) may also play a role in CTS. The SSCT undergoes fibrotic thickening which is generally described as "non-inflammatory" based on basic histology. This study uses immunohistochemistry to determine the presence of macrophages and T-cells within SSCT and their relationship with symptoms in people with CTS. SSCT was collected from twenty people with CTS and eight controls undergoing wrist fracture surgery. Immunohistochemical qu
