The dangers of an adventurous partner: Cordylobia anthropophaga infestation in London.

We describe a case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga acquired in the UK from contact with another person's clothes. We propose that this diagnosis should be considered in both returning travellers and also their household contacts.

Myiasis after study trip to French Guiana.

Cutaneous myiasis is usually a harmless tropical disease caused by infestation with larvae from a variety of flies. Because of its rare occurrence in Europe, it is often misdiagnosed. Increased travel to tropical regions has correspondingly increased the number of cases observed in Europe. The furuncular type of cutaneous myiasis in a 31-year-old biology student was diagnosed upon his return from French Guiana. The student cultured one of the larvae to obtain a botfly. This case is discussed in the light of the current literature on pathogenesis, incidence and therapy of cutaneous myiasis.

Furuncular myiasis: unusual case of African Dermatobia hominis.

Human cutaneous myiasis is a common disease in endemic tropical zones. Increased international travel has produced increases in imported cases. We present an unusual patient with myiasis infestation of the leg caused by Dermatobia hominis, which manifested after returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This particular infestation has not been reported in Morocco prior to this case. Furuncular cutaneous miyasis must be considered when travellers exhibit draining nodules. Medical treatment consists of occlusion of the furuncular punctum with vaseline to stimulate extrusion of the larva o

Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax in a drug user.

Myiasis is the condition resulting from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The blowflies (Calliphoridae) of Argentina comprise several species that may cause myiasis by colonizing wounds or infected body orifices, and one specific parasite: Cochliomyia hominivorax. This species often causes traumatic myiasis in cattle, dogs and cats, and it is not rare in humans. The larvae consume living tissues, so they are dangerous unless speedily removed. Immediate operative exploration along with the removal of larvae and primary defect closure is recommended in ever

Infestation of an owl (Bubo bubo) with Lucilia spp.

Myiasis is an infestation of tissue with the larval stage of dipterous flies. This condition mostly affects the skin but may also occur in certain body cavities. It can occur in either animals or humans and is caused by parasitic dipterous fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. This disease rarely effects birds especially owls. In this study, infestation of an owl with cutaneous myiasis is reported. In October 2008, a wounded owl was referred by the environmental department of Chaharmahal-Bakhtiary province to the clinic of veterinary science at Shahrekord University in we

Cuterebra cutaneous myiasis: case report and world literature review.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of myiasis in North America are caused by fly larvae from South America or Africa, as these cases represent travelers returning from endemic regions. The etiology of creeping eruptions and furuncular lesions in North American patients who have no history of recent travel can therefore be a diagnostic problem. Among cases acquired in North America, Cuterebra species are the usual cause. Dermatologists and dermatopathologists should be aware that this unusual infestation may occur without a travel history. METHOD: Here we report a case of Cuterebra cutaneous myiasis acqui

Cutaneous myiasis from Panama, South America: case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is a cutaneous infestation with larvae of Diptera, the two-winged arthropod order. Eggs and/or larvae are transmitted directly from the environment or via arthropod vectors. Larvae are able to burrow into the dermis of intact skin or external body orifices. Three clinical variants of myiasis are furuncular, migratory (creeping), and infestation of wounds. METHODS: A 35-year-old male presented with a 1-month history of worsening furuncles on the left knee and posterior thigh following his return from Panama, South America. Clinical examination revealed tender 6 cm and 2 cm

Cutaneous myiasis.

Cutaneous myiasis is a unique disease, endemic in tropical areas, and uncommon in the Western world, making its diagnosis difficult for physicians that are unfamiliar with the disease process. Larvae of a two-winged fly are inoculated through normal skin by a mosquito bite. The larvae grow in the subcutaneous tissues, feed off the surrounding tissues and develop into a fly. A patient with a seemingly commonplace cutaneous lesion which was a harbinger of a much more sinister, unique disease process, is presented. Salient features that characterise these lesions, the difficulty in accurate (and

Cutaneous myiasis arising in an eccrine adnexal neoplasm.

Myiasis is the infestation of human tissue by fly maggots. Although it is most often reported in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world and in travelers returning from these areas, cases do occur in the United States. We report here a case of cutaneous myiasis observed in the setting of an eccrine adnexal neoplasm in an otherwise healthy host. Entomological analysis of the isolated organisms revealed additional information of interest.

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Hypoderma lineatum.

Cutaneous myiasis is a temporary parasitic infestation of the skin of domestic and wild animals and occasionally of humans by the larvae of flies. Larvae of many flies from various geographic areas can cause myiasis: in Central and South America, human cutaneous myiasis is mainly caused by the larvae of Dermatobia hominis; in Africa, by the larvae of Cordylobia anthropophaga; in the northern hemisphere (North America, Europe, Africa and Asia), by the larvae of Hypoderma spp. A case of cutaneous myiasis in a 47-year-old woman, co-author of the present report, is described. She returned to Slove

Sheep blowfly strike risk and management in Great Britain: a survey of current practice.

The methods used for the control of sheep blowfly strike (ovine cutaneous myiasis) and the farm management factors associated with strike prevalence were examined using data from questionnaire survey returns provided by 966 sheep farmers in Great Britain, based on the period between March 2003 and February 2004. Overall, 91% of participants treated prophylactically with insecticides against blowfly strike; 39% treated twice and 11% treated more than three times in the year. Insect growth regulators (IGRs) were the most commonly chosen product (40%), especially the IGR cyromazine. Only 12% of f

[Human cutaneous myiasis: a case report].

Myiasis is a self-limiting infestion of tissues by fly larvae commonly referred as maggots. A case of cutaneous myiasis in a 61 year old woman admitted to the Department of Emergency of S. Giovanni Hospital in Rome (Italy) is reported in the present note. The patient, a religious sister, returned to Rome from a mission trip of few weeks in Edea (Cameroon, Africa), was suffering from a subclavicular furuncular skin lesion; one maggot was surgically removed and submitted for parasitological examination. Based on the maggot shape and size, the travel history and the clinical presentation, a maggo

Cutaneous myiasis.

UNLABELLED: Myiasis is the infestation of living tissue by the larvae of flies in the order Diptera. Cutaneous involvement is the most common type of myiasis. Cutaneous myiasis can be subdivided into furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Each subtype is reviewed with discussion of the larvae involved, presenting signs and symptoms, clinical differential diagnoses, and treatment. Preventive measures are also described. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants should be familiar with the causal agents, clinical manifestations, and treatment of human cut

Multiple furunculoid myiasis on the scalp of a child.

Cutaneous myiasis is easy to diagnose and treat if clinicians are aware of the condition. Because of widespread travel, physicians may encounter this infestation in patients living in geographical regions where the condition is rare. A child is presented with cutaneous myiasis that presented as furuncle-like nodules on the scalp. The larvae were identified as a stage of the bluebottle-like fly, Dermatobia hominis.
