Scanning electron microscopy of Dermatobia hominis reveals cutaneous anchoring features.

We report the case of a 45-year-old Caucasian woman suffering from cutaneous myiasis. With the use of scanning electron microscopy, we placed special focus on the mechanisms by which Dermatobia hominis can fasten securely within the human skin.

A case of furuncular myiasis associated with systemic inflammation.

Cutaneous myiasis is a common travel-associated dermatosis caused by fly larvae. We report an unusual case of furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis that was associated with signs of systemic inflammation. In this case study, morphological and novel molecular approaches were used to identify and characterize the larvae responsible for human infestation.

A case of cutaneous myiasis due to Dermatobia hominis in Japan.

We report the 34th imported case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in Japan, which is not a habitat of the fly. A 41-year-old Japanese man noticed an insect-sting-like papule on his left upper back during his stay in Ecuador in March 2004. After his return home, the lesion gradually increased to become a red subcutaneous nodule with a central pore from which serosanguineous fluid drained. Because antimicrobial treatment under a diagnosis of inflammatory atheroma was ineffective, the lesion was incised and a 3rd instar larva of D. hominis was then found and removed. We checked t

Fly abundance and climate as determinants of sheep blowfly strike incidence in southwest England.

The relationships between abundance of the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), climate, animal management procedures and the incidence of cutaneous myiasis (blowfly strike) in sheep were examined in three sheep pasture systems in southwest England during the summers of 2002 and 2003. In each year, flies were collected using liver-baited sticky targets, daily weather and routine husbandry practices were noted and the age-class of each animal infested and body position of each strike were recorded. On sites where no strike control was used, 5.8-12.1% of ewes and 5.7-15.8%

[Furunculoid skin lesions after travel to the tropics].

We present a case of cutaneous myiasis (Tumbu fly; Cordylobia anthropophaga) in a German traveller returning from Africa. Myiasis is caused by dipterous larvae invading human or animal tissues. The diagnosis is based on the travel history and specific features of the furunculoid skin lesions. Larvae are extracted with forceps or are surgically removed.

[Cutaneous myiasis over tumor-lesions: presentation of three cases].

We report three cases of myiasis in patients with tumor-lesions. The first patient, a 54-year-old male, presented with laryngeal carcinoma with extensive local involvement, forming a large tumorous mass on the front of the neck that had been irradiated, where several active larvae were seen. The other two patients, females aged 101 and 87 years, respectively, presented with skin tumors on the scalp and face, and several active larvae could be seen in these tumors. After microbiological examination of the larvae removed, the species in the first case was identified as Chrysomya, while the speci

The potential for improving welfare standards and productivity in United Kingdom sheep flocks using veterinary flock health plans.

Data from industry sources detailing variable costs in 2003 revealed that the average farmer keeping 1000 lowland ewes in the United Kingdom spent 3500 UK pounds annually on veterinary fees and medicines. Despite such expenditure, psoroptic mange and cutaneous myiasis are common in the UK, resistance to one or more anthelmintic group is not only common but increasing in frequency and distribution, and abortion outbreaks caused by Toxoplasma gondii and Chlamydophila abortus are frequently reported by veterinary laboratories. Welfare concerns also arise from farmers' intransigence towards tail d

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga.

Cutaneous myiasis is a temporary parasitic infestation of the skin of human and other vertebrates by fly larvae, primarily species of the flies Dermatobia and Cordylobia. In Central and South America cutaneous myiasis is mainly caused by the larvae of Dermatobia hominis; in Africa it is mostly due to the larvae of Cordylobia spp. We describe a case of cutaneous myiasis in a family who returned to Slovenia from a three-week trip to Ghana. The parasites, in tumor-like swellings about 1-2 cm in diameter and 0.5-1 cm high, were removed from the back of the 48-year-old man, the nose, shoulder and w

The impact of malnutrition and other causes of losses of adult sheep in 12 flocks during drought.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the range and cost of losses in Merino flocks in southern New South Wales during drought conditions by determining the cause of death, morbidity or wasting in adult sheep. DESIGN AND POPULATION: Pathological studies were performed on 392 dead or moribund adult sheep from 12 Ovine Johne's disease (OJD)-infected flocks during 2002 and a further 58 sheep culled due to wasting from one of these flocks in 2003. Flocks ranged between 3,500 and 20,000 sheep. METHOD: The most likely cause of death, morbidity or wasting was determined following consideration of the environment

Cutaneous myiasis with Dermatobia hominis (human bot fly) larvae treated both conservatively and surgically.

A case is presented of infestation with the larvae of Dermatobia hominis (human bot fly). This case is unusual in that it provides an example of three different outcomes for separate lesions in the same patient; spontaneous resolution, conservative treatment and surgical intervention. It also illustrates that myiasis should be included in the differential diagnosis of any skin lesion of a patient returning from the tropics.

Incidence of multiple myiases in breasts of rural women and oral infection in infants from the human warble fly larvae in the humid Tropic-Niger Delta.

Twenty-eight rural women of the Niger Delta were infected with the human warble fly (Tumbu fly) larva, Cordylobia anthropophaga, and of the women examined, 22 (78.5%) were nursing-mothers. Among the percentage of women with cutaneous myiasis, 20 had multiple myiases in their breasts. Larvae were also extracted from the upper and lower lips of breast-fed infants. A positive correlation was drawn between the incidence of breast and oral myiases.

Biological activity of Bacillus thuringiensis strains against larvae of the blowfly Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Different strains of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner were proved to be a powerful biologic insecticide against larvae of several insect orders. Due to the epidemiological importance of blowflies of the Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy genus in the production of secondary cutaneous myiasis and mechanic transmission of pathogenic agents, the performance of two strains of B. thuringiensis (LFB-FIOCRUZ 907 and LFB-FIOCRUZ 856) was tested against larvae of Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann). The LFB-FIOCRUZ 907 strain was tested in four different concentrations, added to the diet; the LFB-FIOCRUZ 856 strain

Evaluation of efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes against larvae of Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

The blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is the primary agent of cutaneous myiasis of sheep in northern Europe, southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. As the application of chemicals has several disadvantages, alternative control measures of traumatic myiasis of livestock must be developed. In this study, the use of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) as potential biocontrol agents against second instar larvae of Lucilia sericata was considered. The following nematode species were tested: Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (IS 5, HHU 1, Hmol, HNC 1, HAZ 36, Hbrecon, H

A case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica.

Myiasis is caused by the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The disease is infrequent in Turkey; it is observed particularly in people with some predisposing factors. A 46-year-old male farmer with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) presented with the complaint of a blood-tinged discharge and pain in the left frontal-temporal region for three days. Physical examination revealed live maggots in the ulcerous wound resulting from basal cell carcinoma. The larvae were removed with forceps, and the wound was locally dressed with povidone-iodine. The maggo

Human botfly infestation presenting as peri-auricular mass.

To report a new cause of peri-auricular mass in children: cutaneous myiasis-botfly infestation. Case report. The human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) is found in the tropics of Central and South America. However, cases of infestation are uncommon in the United States. We present the case of a 5-year-old girl with cutaneous myiasis in order to expand the differential diagnosis for a peri-auricular mass in children. In our report, the parasite was initially identified as sparganum, but was later reclassified by the center for disease control and prevention (CDC) as a botfly larva. Parasitic infecti
