Cutaneous myiasis complicating squamous cell carcinoma: a case report with literature review.

Myiasis is derived from the Greek word "myia", which means "fly". Zumpt, a German entomologist, defined this condition as the infestation of living humans and vertebrate animals by dipterous larvae that feed on living and dead host tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food for a certain period. Myiasis is a rare complication that can occur in advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This report describes a rare cutaneous SCC of the face complicated by myiasis. A 70-year-old male patient presented with cutaneous SCC that involved the left lateral side of the nose, medial canthus, and left

Canine intestinal pseudomyiasis by blow flies and first documented case report caused by Lucilia cuprina in Central America.

Pseudomyiases occur when vertebrates ingest eggs or larvae of flies that survive gastrointestinal passage and may result in pathological reactions, but they are usually unable to continue their life cycle in the host. Many blow fly species (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are associated with facultative cutaneous myiasis in humans and animals; however, very few cases of blow fly pseudomyiasis have been published in animals. In this report, two cases of canine pseudomyiasis caused by blow flies are documented, and Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann was confirmed as the species responsible in one of them. It is

Machine learning-based text mining for cutaneous myiasis and potential value of an accidental maggot therapy for complicated skin and soft tissue infection with sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis, one of the most frequently diagnosed myiasis types, is defined as skin or soft tissue on a living host infested by dipterous larvae (maggots). However, bibliometric analysis of this disease remains sparse. Machine learning techniques and updated publications provide an opportunity for such an investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the studies were retrieved from PubMed and were processed using R software in the bibliometric analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling. Furthermore, the clinical management of two diabetes patients with serious

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma with myiasis: a case report.

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a challenge for treatment. It is also a risk factor for unintended infestation with Diptera larvae (maggots) known as myiasis. We describe a rare case of cutaneous myiasis located on a giant SCC of the face in an elderly female. Myiasis coupled with malignant skin conditions provides a unique surgical challenge as it is associated with a significantly increased risk of complications and mortalities. A literature review using PUBMED revealed 15 cases of SCC-associated myiasis due to different species. It is not only a disease of older age, as two of the

Use of Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Travel-Acquired Cutaneous Myiasis in a Pediatric Patient.

A pediatric patient presented to the emergency department with ambiguous scalp lesions following recent travel to a tropical region. Despite a prompt physical examination and subsequent laboratory investigations, a definitive diagnosis could not be established. An experienced ultrasound radiologist from our team was consulted to assist in the diagnostic process using ultrasound imaging. The ultrasound revealed the presence of subcutaneous larvae, confirming a diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis, which had initially mimicked a more common dermatological condition. This case highlights the valuable r

Cutaneous Myiasis Presenting as Painful Leg Nodules Following a Fishing Trip to El Salvador: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 50-year-old Hispanic man with recent travel to El Salvador, who developed two painful nodules on his right lower extremity following a fishing trip. Upon medical evaluation, the nodules were diagnosed as cutaneous myiasis, likely caused by Dermatobia hominis. Videos demonstrating a minimally traumatic larval extraction technique are included. This case underscores the importance of considering myiasis in the differential diagnosis of painful skin nodules in returning travelers and highlights an effective removal method.

Population structure, gene flow and genetic diversity of sheep blowfly (Lucilia cuprina dorsalis) in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Flystrike (cutaneous myiasis) is caused by blowfly larvae of the genus Lucilia. This disease is a major obstacle to sustainable global sheep and wool production. Flystrike control relies primarily on breech modification surgery (mulesing) and insecticidal treatment; however, control is constantly compromised by the emergence and spread of insecticide-resistance. Preventing the spread of resistance is severely hindered by a limited understanding of genetic variation, structure and gene flow within and among Lucilia populations. Australia is one of the world's largest producers of sh

A Rare Encounter: Locally Acquired Furuncular Myiasis (Botfly) in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: Furuncular myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae in the skin, typically presenting as painful, inflammatory nodules. In the United States, the most common causative agent is Dermatobia hominis (human botfly), though autochthonous cases are exceedingly rare. These are caused by the rodent botfly Cuterebra, which is endemic to North America. Humans are incidental hosts, often through outdoor activities near rodent burrows. Diagnosis can be challenging, as it may resemble more common conditions such as an abscess or cellulitis. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old female

Cutaneous myiasis in a Serbian traveller returning from Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is an ectoparasitic disease caused by fly larvae. In non-endemic regions it is rare, often unfamiliar to clinicians and readily misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old Serbian traveller developed painful furuncular lesions on the thigh after returning from Kenya. The lesions were initially treated as insect bites with intramuscular corticosteroid, antihistamines and topical betamethasone-gentamicin. Spontaneous expulsion of a larva led to the recognition of myiasis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three third-instar (L3) larvae were surgically removed. Morphological

Furuncular cutaneous myiasis after travel in South America: case report and epidemiologic, diagnostic and management considerations.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic conditions are among the most frequent health problems in international travelers, following gastrointestinal and febrile illnesses. Myiasis, defined as infestation of human tissue by dipterous fly larvae, represents a noteworthy dermatologic diagnosis, particularly in travelers returning from tropical regions. Furuncular myiasis is the most recognizable form, presenting with painful nodules containing larvae, and is commonly caused by Dermatobia hominis in Central and South America. Increasing international travel is expected to raise the incidence of such conditions

Old World screwworm myiasis: first report of Chrysomya bezziana in Chinese Milu (Elaphurus davidianus).

Myiasis is the infestation of humans and other warm-blooded animals with dipterous larvae. In the current study, a total of 40 maggots were collected from the cutaneous lesions of the Chinese Milu (Elaphurus davidianus) in China. Based on morphological identification, the third-instar larvae were classified as Chrysomya bezziana. To accurately identify this species, genomic DNA from the larvae was analyzed using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The findings indicated that the examined larvae were unequivocally consistent with the Old World screwworm fly, C. bezziana
