Cutaneous Myiasis Around Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube Insertion Site: The Second Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis refers to the infestation of live human with 2-winged larvae (maggots). Cutaneous myiasis is the most commonly encountered clinical form. It is divided into 3 main forms: furuncular, creeping (migratory), and wound (traumatic) myiasis. CASE REPORT: In this article, we report an extremely rare case of myiasis around percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube in a 71-year-old female patient. She had the tube placed for feeding purposes, 8 months prior to her presentation. Family noticed alive worms emerging from skin at the gastrostomy tube insertion site. Patient was tr

Chrysomya bezziana: a case report in a dog from Southern China and review of the Chinese literature.

Chrysomya bezziana is an obligate, myiasis-causing fly in humans and warm-blooded animals throughout the tropical and subtropical Old World. We report a case of cutaneous myiasis due to C. bezziana in a dog from Guangxi province in China. A total of 35 maggots were removed from the lesions. Direct sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene showed that the specimen belonged to haplotype CB_bezz02, which was previously reported in Malaysia and the Gulf region. This paper also reviews reported cases of screwworm myiasis from humans and animals in China. Geographical records indicate that t

Cutaneous myiasis in an elderly woman in Somaliland.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is a self-limited skin infestation by developing fly larvae, with three clinical subtypes: furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Furuncular myiasis is endemic throughout much of Africa; however, few reports are from the Horn of Africa. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 85-year-old woman in Somaliland presented with a 12-day history of multiple painful and pruritic nodules on the temple, arm, chest, breast, flank, and legs. The posterior of a larva was visible within several lesions. One larva was extracted from an arm nodule and identified as Cordylobia anthropophaga

The comparative efficacy of afoxolaner, spinosad, milbemycin, spinosad plus milbemycin, and nitenpyram for the treatment of canine cutaneous myiasis.

BACKGROUND: Canine screw-worm myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax or Chrysomya bezziana has traditionally been treated with extra-label use of ivermectin. The larvicidal activities of nitenpyram and spinosad/milbemycin also have been described, but there have been no reports to describe the efficacy of isoxazolines such as afoxolaner. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of spinosad, spinosad/milbemycin, milbemycin, nitenpyram and afoxolaner for the treatment of canine screw-worm myiasis. ANIMALS: Forty client-owned and naturally infested dogs. METHODS: Cases were randomized

A Case of Cutaneous Myiasis Caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga Larvae in a Korean Traveler Returning from Central Africa.

The cutaneous myiasis has been rarely reported in the Republic of Korea. We intended to describe here a case of furuncular cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga larvae in a Korean traveler returned from Central Africa. A patient, 55-year-old man, had traveled to Equatorial Guinea, in Central Africa for a month and just returned to Korea. Physical examinations showed 2 tender erythematous nodules with small central ulceration on the left buttock and thigh. During skin biopsy, 2 larvae came out from the lesion. C. anthropophaga was identified by paired mouth hooks (toothed, spade-

Oral and cutaneous myiasis in a five-year-old child from Karachi, Pakistan.

Myiasis is a pathological condition in which there is a pestilence of fly larvae feeding on living or dead tissues. This disease is common in the tropics and subtropics of Africa and America and rarely affects humans. Our case report describes a five-year-old boy from Karachi, Pakistan with a history of extraction sockets and incisional biopsy of the left parotid lymph node. Lack of proper wound maintenance led to infestation of maggots both over the overlying skin of the left parotid region and the posterior oral cavity. The plan was wound debridement both outside and intra-orally under local

Risk factors for cutaneous myiasis (blowfly strike) in pet rabbits in Great Britain based on text-mining veterinary electronic health records.

Blowfly strike is a devastating and often rapidly fatal disease in rabbits. In Great Britain (GB), Lucilia sericata is the primary causative species. Despite its severity, there has been minimal investigatory work into the disease in rabbits. Here we used text mining to screen electronic health records (EHRs) from a large sentinel network of 389 veterinary practices in GB between March 2014 and April 2017 for confirmed cases of blowfly strike in rabbits. Blowfly strike was identified in 243 of 42,226 rabbit consultations (0.6%), affecting 205 individual rabbits. The anatomical site of recorded

Artemisia spp. essential oils against the disease-carrying blowfly Calliphora vomitoria.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic flies play a considerable role in the transmission of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms. In this work, the essential oil (EO) of two aromatic plants, Artemisia annua and Artemisia dracunculus, were evaluated for their abilities to control the blowfly Calliphora vomitoria. Artemisia annua and A. dracunculus EOs were extracted, analysed and tested in laboratory bioassays. Besides, the physiology of EOs toxicity and the EOs antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated. RESULTS: Both Artemisia EOs deterred C. vomitoria oviposition on fresh beef meat.

Novel porcine model of cutaneous myiasis: a training tool for healthcare workers.

Cutaneous myiasis is a well-described problem in travellers to endemic regions including military personnel. Realistic training is important to ensure that healthcare workers have the confidence and expertise to recognise cutaneous myiasis and safely remove larvae if required. A model is described here that is simple, reproducible and realistic, and will allow for training of military healthcare workers in safe surgical removal of larvae when required.

[Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax associated with seborrheic dermatitis].

Myiasis is an infestation of tissues and organs of humans and animals by Diptera larvae (flies, horseflies, mosquitoes). They are located at different body sites, and classified clinically as cutaneous, visceral and cavitary. We report a 26-year-old woman with a history of seborrheic dermatitis and recent trip to Brazil. She presented with a seven days history of suppurating wounds in the parieto-occipital area of the scalp. At physical examination we found three ulcers of approximately 1.5 cm each, with multiple mobile larvae inside. The obtained larvae were analyzed, identifying Cochliomyia

Dermatoscopy in Diagnosis of Cutaneous Myiasis Arising in Pemphigus Vulgaris Lesions.

Myiasis, infestation of live human and vertebrate animals by larvae, can complicate ulcers and open wounds. Although myiasis occurs in neglected erosions of pemphigus, such a complication is not documented in the literature. Herein, we report a case of myiasis complicating pemphigus vulgaris and describe its dermatoscopic features.

Eyelid inflammation: An uncommon cause in occidental countries.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis designates the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with dipterous (two-winged) larvae (maggots) and is the fourth most common travel-associated skin disease. Furuncle is the most common aspect of cutaneous myiasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old Caucasian female had been back from Cap-Vert. She described pruritus, slight pain, and the sensation of a foreign body moving in the eyelid. Physical examination showed a single furuncle-like nodule with surrounding erythema and a central pore of the upper eyelid through which a serosanguinous fluid was exuding. A la
