Modelling the impact of climate change on spatial patterns of disease risk: sheep blowfly strike by Lucilia sericata in Great Britain.

Understanding the spatial scale and temporal pattern of disease incidence is a fundamental prerequisite for the development of appropriate management and intervention strategies. It is particularly critical, given the need to understand the elevated risks linked to climate change, to allow the most likely changes in the distribution of parasites and disease vectors to be predicted under a range of climate change scenarios. Using statistical models, the spatial distribution and climatic correlates of a range of parasites and diseases have been mapped previously, but their development into dynam

Myiasis in a dog shelter in Greece: epidemiological and clinical features and therapeutic considerations.

The paper describes features of myiasis in a cohort of 163 dogs in an animal shelter, monitored over 3.5 years (4 fly activity seasons). Seven dogs (4 males, 3 females) were presented with myiasis; two dogs were presented twice with infestation in different areas of their body. The overall incidence rate (IR) of myiasis was 5.8 cases per 10(3) animal-months at risk, or else 0.0058 case per animal-month at risk. Six cases occurred from May to July and three from August to October, giving IRs of 7.7 per 10(3) animal-months and 3.9 per 10(3) animal-months, respectively, and an IR ratio of 1.97 (P

Livestock ectoparasites: integrated management in a changing climate.

The prevalence of livestock ectoparasites is the result of a complex interaction of factors such as parasite and host abundance, host susceptibility, climate and, critically, farmer husbandry and intervention strategies, all of which change seasonally in space and time. Given the complexity of the interacting factors, the effects of any climate change on disease incidence are hard to predict, as accordingly are the optimal husbandry responses required to ameliorate any effects. Here cutaneous myiasis in sheep, by the blowfly Lucilia sericata in the United Kingdom, is used to highlight the impa

Cutaneous superficial myiasis: report of a rare nosocomial parasitic disease caused by Sarcophaga spp. (diptera, sarcophagidae).

Flies of the genus Sarcophaga are known to cause myiasis in necrotic wounds and in anatomical cavities where fluids have collected. We present here the first case of external cutaneous myiasis by Sarcophaga larvae in the absence of skin ulcerations or necrosis. The host in this case was a geriatric patient with limited motor and neurological capacity who lives in a nursing home. Of particular importance is that Sarcophaga is capable of causing myiasis even in the absence of cutaneous infections or significant stasis of fluids or secretions and that the larvae can cause damage in otherwise heal

Effectiveness of wound cleansing treatments on maggot (Diptera, Calliphoridae) mortality.

Myiasis is defined as an infestation of the organs and/or tissues of human and other animals by fly maggots. Fly species that normally breed in meat or carrion (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae) may become involved in cutaneous myiasis by colonizing preexisting wounds. Reports of human wound myiasis contracted in hospitals and nursing homes, especially when patients are chronically ill or bed-ridden, are not uncommon across North America and often result in cases of neglect and civil litigation. Based on a case history dealing with this latter situation and circumstances surrounding the t

Comparison of traps for the control of sheep blowfly in the U.K.

The ability of three commercially available trap types to catch Lucilia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) blowflies was assessed on three sheep farms in southwest England in 2008. The aim was to evaluate their relative value for the control of ovine cutaneous myiasis (sheep blowfly strike) on farms. There was a highly significant difference between the total number of female Lucilia caught per day by the traps, with an Agrilure Trap (Agrimin Ltd, Brigg, U.K.) catching more than the other trap types (Rescue Disposable Fly Trap, Sterling International, Spokane, U.S.A.; Redtop Trap, Miller Methods, Johann

[Dermatobia hominis furuncular myiasis in a man returning from Latin America: first imported case in Tunisia].

Human cutaneous myiasis is a common dermatosis in tropical zones. The purpose of this report is to describe the first imported case of furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis (human botfly) in Tunisia. The patient was a man returning from Bolivia. Furuncular myiasis was suspected based on epidemiological data and clinical examination showing pruriginous elevated lesions. Diagnosis was confirmed by identification of Dermatobia hominis larvae. Treatment was based mainly on manual removal of larvae. Since furuncular myiasis is unknown in Tunisia, it is important to remember this parasitic

Traumatic myiasis from Sarcophaga (Bercaeal cruentata Meigen, 1826 (Diptera, Sarcophagidae) in a hospital environment: reporting of a clinical case following polytrauma.

We present a case of cutaneous myiasis occurring in a hospital environment (nosocomial myiasis) in an patient with serious multiple traumas sustained in a motorcycle accident. The agent responsible for the myiasis was identified as Sarcophaga cruentata (Meigen 1826). The larvae found in the necrotic wound were removed and the necessary environmental measures were taken to avoid further infestation. Although nonocomial myiasis is a form of parasitosis already cited in the in literature, it is a rare event and worthy of attention to aid in identifying parasitosis in hospitalized subjects in orde

Cutaneous myiasis in a geriatric patient.

Cutaneous myiasis in humans involving fly species endemic in Italy are uncommon and are not often present in the literature. In the present article we describe the case of cutaneous myiasis in a woman brought to the Emergency Department (ED) of the S. Croce e Carle General Hospital in Cuneo, northwest Italy. The patient was in precarious hygienic condition, and was suffering from localized ulcerated foot ulcers with significant inflammation extending up to the knee. Fly larvae, subsequently identified as Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826), were found in the lesions. The patient was admitted to th

Cutaneous myiasis: a review of the common types of myiasis.

Myiasis is derived from the Greek word, myia, meaning fly. The term was first introduced by Hope in 1840 and refers to the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with dipterous (two-winged) larvae (maggots) which, at least for a certain period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body-substance, or ingested food. Myiasis is the fourth most common travel-associated skin disease and cutaneous myiasis is the most frequently encountered clinical form. Cutaneous myiasis can be divided into three main clinical manifestations: furuncular, creeping (migratory), and wound (trauma

[Cutaneous myiasis by Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera Calliphoridae) in Hospital Universidad del Norte, Soledad, Atlántico].

Human myiasis is the parasitism of human tissues by fly larvae. Diagnoses are based on clinical pattern of tissue damage and presence of insect stages. Herein, a case myiasis is described in a seven-year-old female child. She presented with fever associated with abscessed scalp lesions containing exposed larvae. Severe pediculosis was also observed. The patient was hospitalized and treated with clindamycin, gentamicin (for bacterial secondary infections) and ivermectin (treatment for lice) after which the patient showed clinical improvement and was discharged four days later. Since human myias

Detection of cutaneous myiasis in sheep using an 'electronic nose'.

Cutaneous myiasis (flystrike), in Australia caused primarily by Lucilia cuprina [Diptera: Calliphoridae], is a debilitating, painful and potentially lethal disease of sheep. Early detection of flystrike is difficult and continual flock surveillance is required to enable timely treatment of struck sheep. Electronic nose technology offers the potential for early and automated detection of flystrike. An electronic nose consisting of six metal oxide semiconductor sensors and temperature and humidity sensors was used to measure odours collected by dynamic headspace sampling during flystrike develop

Furuncular myiasis in a child caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) associated with eosinophilia.

We report the case of an eight-year-old boy with hypereosinophilia who presented with a swelling under his right armpit that had persisted for more than four weeks. A second-stage larva of Wohlfahrtia magnifica was found, leading to the diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis. Following removal of the larva, the clinical and hematological manifestations returned to normal. Diagnosis of myiasis should always be kept in mind in the event of clinical signs of furuncular lesions, which may be accompanied by eosinophilia.
