Eighty percent of 50 dissected cadaver palms showed a communicating branch between the fourth and third common digital nerves (ulnar and median origins, respectively). The branch commonly crossed the palm with the superficial arterial arch and usually provided sensory fibers from a branch of the superficial ulnar nerve into the ring finger radial digital nerve. Caution should be taken during carpal tunnel release or other surgery along the axis of the fourth ray to avoid injury to this structure.

We describe a neurovascular island flap of forearm skin based on the radial artery at the wrist level with reversed arterial blood flow. The flap may cover almost any skin and soft tissue defect of the hand. The flap is drained via venous anastomosis between one of the forearm veins and a suitable vein of the hand. Sensation is provided through a microneural anastomosis of one of the sensitive nerves of the forearm to a corresponding nerve of the hand.

The arterial supply of the thumb was studied in 50 cadaver hands. In 80% the princeps pollicis artery was the first palmar metacarpal artery, a major branch of the deep radial arch. Computerized axial tomography is a new method of tissue examination with x-rays whereby a picture can be produced which is a representation of a slice of the skull.
