[Myiasis: a practical approach].

Myiasis refers to the infestation of humans or other vertebrates by dipteran larvae that feed on living or necrotic tissue. It occurs worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Furuncular myiasis presents as a painful, erythematous, furuncle-like nodule with a central breathing pore, often accompanied by serous discharge and a sensation of movement. In Central and South America, it is caused by Dermatobia hominis, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, Cordylobia anthropophaga is the predominant causative species. While D. hominis transfers its eggs to humans via blood-feeding arthro

Wound myiasis caused by Lucilia spp. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a dog and a cat in Korea.

This study presents 2 cases of wound myiasis in a dog and a cat involving morphological and molecular identification in Korea. A 7-year-old male Jindo mix dog, Canis familiaris, was admitted to a veterinary clinic in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, in July 2024. The bite wound near the right rib was infected with maggots. We carefully removed the 5 maggots using forceps. The wound healed without any subsequent complications. A Korean Shorthair stray cat, Felis catus, was brought to the same clinic in October 2024 after being hit by a car. The maggot-infected wounds were found in the anus

Wound Myiasis Complicating a Malignant Wound Caused by Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Lip: A Case Report.

Wound myiasis is a relatively rare condition characterized by the infestation of an open wound with fly larvae and may complicate malignant wounds associated with locally advanced cancers. We report a case of wound myiasis complicating a malignant wound caused by locally advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the upper lip. An octogenarian man with MCC of the left upper lip (cT2N1M0, Stage III) developed local recurrence after radiotherapy and was subsequently treated with avelumab followed by paclitaxel. Five days after the second cycle of paclitaxel, he presented with a chief complaint of t

The Case of Severe Wound Myiasis Caused by a Minor Injury Sustained by a Spectator During a Tip-Cat-Sport.

Wound myiasis commonly occurs in tropical regions and is caused by flies laying eggs on open wounds. It is essential to raise awareness about preventive measures and treatment methods for this disease, especially because many people now visit endemic areas from non-endemic regions. This report presents a wound myiasis case caused by Chrysomya bezziana, resulting from a small wound sustained by a spectator of "Tip-Cat-sport." A 64-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital in Bangladesh with a severe facial wound infection and symptoms of fever, pain, and swelling. She sustained an injury from t

Neglected Trichilemmal Carcinoma with Severe Opportunistic Cutaneous Wound Myiasis: A First Case Report and Implications for Elderly Rural Populations.

This report describes the first documented case of trichilemmal carcinoma (TLC) complicated by opportunistic cutaneous wound myiasis in an elderly rural female patient with a long-standing ulcerated scalp tumour and heavy maggot infestation. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of TLC. A two-stage management strategy was implemented for the patient: initial eradication of myiasis and control of bacterial superinfection, followed by wide local excision of the tumour with split-thickness skin grafting. The patient achieved a good therapeutic outcome with no tumour recurrence at

A structured support process for social reintegration of a patient with long-term hikikomori: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hikikomori is a condition characterized by remaining predominantly at home for at least 6 months, with marked social withdrawal and functional impairment. In prolonged cases, reduced self-care and physical comorbidities are common; however, access to necessary medical care is often limited. When a distrust of medical services and the refusal of psychiatric care are pronounced, psychiatric interventions alone may be insufficient. In such cases, it is important to use general medical care as an entry point to subsequent psychiatric and community-based support. CASE PRESENTATION: We

Maggot infestation leading to Ignatzschineria larvae bacteremia and bladder outlet obstruction.

We report a case of a 61-year-old man with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis and impaired mobility who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with hepatic encephalopathy, cellulitis, sepsis, and extensive maggot infestation (myiasis). Maggots were recovered from the patient's skin, urethra, and rectum, and the burden of maggots in the urethra had led to bladder outlet obstruction. Blood cultures revealed polymicrobial bacteremia, including Ignatzschineria larvae. Ignatzschineria larvae is a commensal bacterium that resides in the digestive tract of maggots. The organism is rarely pathogenic

Palliative Management of Advanced Breast Carcinoma Complicated by Myiasis: First Case Report From Bangladesh.

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common subtype of breast cancer. While malignant wounds are known to predispose patients to secondary infections, the co-occurrence of cutaneous myiasis in breast carcinoma remains rare. We report the first documented case of wound myiasis in a patient with advanced breast carcinoma in Bangladesh. A 52-year-old woman with HER2-positive IDC of the right breast, previously treated with mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in a tertiary care hospital of Dhaka, presented to the Department of Palliative Medicine at Bangladesh Medical University with

Malignant Fungating Wounds in Advanced Cancer: Pathophysiology, Odor Control, and Dignity-Centered Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) represent a profoundly distressing complication of advanced cancer, affecting an estimated 5-10% of patients with solid tumors and imposing a disproportionate burden on quality of life, caregiver wellbeing, and therapeutic engagement. Despite their clinical significance, MFWs remain a systematically neglected domain within oncology and palliative medicine. Existing literature addresses wound odor, wound myiasis, and dignity-related dimensions as isolated topics; a unified clinical framework integrating these three domains from both biologica

Management of myiasis in advanced head and neck cancers: a comprehensive review.

Accidental myiasis, defined as the infestation of living or necrotic tissue by Diptera larvae, represents a neglected but profoundly distressing complication in patients afflicted with advanced malignancies, particularly head and neck cancers (HNC). HNC constitutes a major global health burden, with an exceptionally high incidence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such as India, where delayed presentation often culminates in large, ulcerative malignant fungating wounds (MFWs). These MFWs, coupled with environmental factors, socioeconomic disadvantage, poor hygiene, and patient debil

SPARROW: subtyping Parkinson's disease with agentic reasoning and robust omics workflow.

BACKGROUND: Retinal ischemia is a retinal disorder related to retinal vascular occlusion, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The study aimed to evaluate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of Chi-Ju-Di-Huang-Wan (CJDHW) against retinal ischemia in rats. METHODS: High intraocular pressure (HIOP)-induced retinal ischemia was established in Wistar rats by raising their intraocular pressure to 120 mmHg for 60 min with in an eye whose anterior chamber was cannulated with a 30-guage needle adapted to a normal saline bottle through an intravenous line.

Ultrasonographic features of Lucilia sericata-induced wound myiasis with foot gas gangrene: A case report.

Myiasis is the tissue infestation by fly larvae, mainly Dermatobia hominis or Lucilia sericata. Sonographic features of D. hominis myiasis are well described but not those of L. sericata with concurrent gas gangrene. A 57-year-old man presented with a 1-month left foot injury, swelling, and functional decline. Examination revealed left foot gangrene with the loss of the fifth toe, maggot infestation, and systemic inflammation. Laboratory tests revealed diabetes mellitus. Point-of-care ultrasound showed subcutaneous air, fluid-debris layers, and hyperechoic, moving structures consistent with la

Ignatzschineria indica bacteremia in a fatal case of accidental wound myiasis.

Ignatzschineria indica is a rare Gram-negative bacterium increasingly recognized as a potential human pathogen associated with wound myiasis and severe bloodstream infections. Here we report a fatal case of I. indica bacteremia in a 63-year-old woman admitted to the intensive care unit with septic shock. The patient had arterial hypertension and liver cirrhosis and was found after prolonged immobilization in severely neglected conditions. Clinical examination revealed extensive pressure ulcers complicated by maggot infestation and a left pertrochanteric femoral fracture. Blood cultures became

A scalp to make you squirm: Cutaneous myiasis hiding a unique presentation of disseminated coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis is predominantly a pulmonary disease, however dissemination can include unique cutaneous presentations. We report a previously healthy 11-year-old female with delayed diagnosis of cutaneous scalp coccidioidomycosis with disseminated disease with secondary wound myiasis and bacterial superinfection. She required extensive surgical debridement, eventually requiring a skin graft and prolonged hospitalization for antifungal therapy, experiencing a unique adverse effect.

Scalp myiasis associated with soft tissue sarcoma lesion: a case report and review of relevant literature.

BACKGROUND: Sarcophagidae is one of the main fly families that is attracted to open wounds, ulcers, lesions, and other injuries for depositing their larvae. The presence of larvae of flies in human tissues makes myiasis. Myiasis on the scalp could be more frightening in comparison with myiasis on the other parts of the body. It is a rare myiasis case that shows the ability of myiasis agents to attack various parts of the body. On the other hand, reporting of myiasis cases by Sarcophagidae larvae is not common due to difficulties in their identification. This study aimed to emphasize the import

Long Time No Hear, Magnificent Wohlfahrtia! Morphological and Molecular Evidence of Almost Forgotten Flesh Fly in Serbia and Western Balkans.

The "beautiful viviparous fly", Wohlfahrtia magnifica, may have a magnificent appearance due to its striking morphology; however, it is a potentially deadly agent of obligate traumatic myiasis in humans and animals, with a serious impact on welfare and economics. The fly is found across the Palearctic realm, including the Western Balkan region, with reports from former Yugoslavian countries from the first half of the 20th century. In this paper, a recent case of wohlfahrtiosis recorded in Northern Serbia is evidenced using morphological and molecular techniques. Larvae were collected from two

Ultrasound features of cutaneous myiasis: a rare case in a child.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the skin with larvae of some dipteran species. Among humans, Dermatobia hominis is the most frequently encountered dipteran responsible for cutaneous myiasis. This insect is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, consequently, individuals travelling from non-endemic areas are most susceptible to infection due to a lack of prior exposure. Three clinical variants of myiasis are distinguished: furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Furuncular myiasis represents the most common form among travelers, yet it is a rare cause of pediatric skin manifestat

Not all maggots are created equal; not all maggots are therapeutic.

Maggots in a wound ("myiasis") cannot be considered maggot therapy (therapeutic myiasis) unless, at a minimum, the species is known to be safe and effective, and the maggots have been properly disinfected. Documenting treatment details is critical and allows us to determine the cause of problems, if they arise.
