Myiasis is a relatively common infection of animals kept as pets, although only 1 case of canine myiasis has been described so far in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we report an additional case of canine wound myiasis with identification of its causative agent, Lucilia sericata. An 8-year-old male Siberian husky dog was referred with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea to the Chungbuk National University Veterinary Medical Center, Cheongju-si (city), Chungcheongbuk-do (province), Korea in July 2013. Physical examination indicated the patient had a deep wound filled with a maggot swa

Myiasis, the tissue invasion of living vertebrate animals by the fly larvae is commonly observed throughout tropical regions of the world. The phenomenon is also witnessed among humans where unhygienic conditions are prevalent and domestic animals are in their close vicinity. Tissue infestation by fly larvae is well recognized complication of neglected wounds. A rare case of recurrence of human myiasis is reported in the chronic wound of an 18-yearsold male patient suffering from 'equinovarus'- a congenital feet deformity. The causative maggots were identified as third instar larvae of the Old

Myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by dipteran larvae settling in living tissue and organs. Infestation is generally found in tropical and rural areas, where interaction with animals is common. It is diagnosed based on the evidence of the existence of dipteran larvae in tissues and organs. When planning the treatment, identifying the type of larvae is as important as identifying the infected organ or system. In this case report, we present the case of a female who had a biliary tract injury caused by laparoscopic cholecystectomy and who developed a postoperative enterocutaneous fistula an

Myiasis is the parasitic infestation of human by the larvae (maggots) of dipterous fly that grow within the host while feeding on its tissue. Cutaneous myiasis is the most considerably encountered clinical form. Moreover, wound (traumatic) myiasis is the main clinical manifestation of cutaneous myiasis. In this research, we aimed to study the type of infesting larvae that are responsible for wound myiasis in the patients in Minia city, Egypt. Three cases of wound myiasis have been noticed among 280 patients with wounds at different parts of bodies. Two of them were diabetic patients. The third

Wound myiasis is the infestation of open wounds of mammalian hosts caused by larvae of various species of flies. This kind of myiasis can be a serious problem for immobilized patients with open wounds. Here, we identify a dipteran larva found in the tracheostomy wound of a child affected by a severe spinal muscular atrophy. The collected larva was dissected and microscopically analyzed. DNA was extracted from part of the larva and used for the molecular identification. A 487 bp fragment, including part of 5.8 S, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2), and part of 28S, was amplified using a n

BACKGROUND: Wound myiasis in the Indian subcontinent is most commonly caused by old world screw-worm (Chrysomya bezziana).
CASE REPORT AND MANAGEMENT: A 4-year-old malnourished girl presented with full thickness rectal prolapse following acute diarrhea with a large wound and screwworm myiasis of the rectum. Turpentine oil was applied to immobilize the maggots followed by manual extraction. Prolapse was successfully treated by manual reduction followed by strapping of the buttocks.
OUTCOME: Child was thriving well and gained 2 kg weight in follow up after two weeks.

Myiases-causing flies are widely observed in tropical countries, whereas in Italy, a temperate country, their epidemiology and clinical presentation are poorly known. We report three cases of human conjunctival myiasis recently observed at our hospital, and the results of a review of the literature on human myiasis in Italy. In August 2012, a case of Oestrus ovis conjunctival myiasis acquired in the city centre of Florence, Italy was diagnosed at our hospital. In the early fall of 2013, two additional cases, acquired in the neighbouring areas, occurred. The review of literature showed that, up

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature on wound myiasis of the head and neck originating in the United States. To our knowledge, only three reports during the past 20 years exist in the literature. Even less common is a case of recurrent myiasis, with only one report published from India during the 1970s. There is often a preconceived notion that larvae are noninvasive and "only eat dead tissue." This mentality must be corrected; invasive larvae exist, there are unique myiasis-related infections, and serious complications can occur. We review the literature and describe recent cases of h

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a challenge for treatment. It is also a risk factor for unintended infestation with diptera larvae (maggots) known as myiasis. We performed a retrospective investigation in our files from 2001 to 2014 and identified three patients with SCC-associated myiasis (three men). In all three cases, Lucilia spp. were found. A literature review using PUBMED revealed another 12 cases of SCC-associated myiasis due to different species. It is not only a disease of older age, as two of the patients were in their 20s. The male to female ratio was 2 to 1. Wound myiasi

We have reported a case of a 40-year-old male diabetic patient, resident of a rural area, who visited the outpatient clinic of the diabetic center in Alnoor Specialist Hospital, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He came to seek medical advice for a single wound in the back of the shoulder since 1 month. After examination, a larva was eliminated and sent to laboratory for confirmation. It was confirmed as the third-stage larva of Sarcophaga species after macroscopic and microscopic examination. This is the first case of a patient having diabetic wound myiasis with the larva of Sarcophaga species reported i

We report a case of pseudomyiasis (accidental myiasis) in a 52-year-old man who had previously undergone surgery and placement of a tracheostomy tube for laryngeal cancer. The patient presented to our outpatient department with a foul-smelling, blood-stained discharge and frequent and severe episodic pain at the site of the tracheostomy. He also reported the discharge of many whitish larvae from the site. On clinical examination, 3 of these larvae were removed from the tracheostomy wound and later identified as Musca domestica (housefly) larvae. The patient underwent further mechanical removal

An 8-year-old tracheostomized, gastrostomized, and with cerebral palsy boy was admitted for tracheostomy wound myiasis and cellulitis. Ether was applied in the wound, and then all the accessible larvae were removed. Antibiotic therapy was initiated. The procedure had to be repeated three more times to extract all the larvae. An airway endoscopy was performed and ruled out the presence of larvae in the airway, as well as any damage to the wall of the trachea. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged.

Myiasis is a common parasitic problem of livestock responsible for severe economic losses in developing and developed countries. There are a number of challenges with the current control strategy, which depends largely on the use of pharmaceutical chemicals. These include inaccessibility, the increasing concern about pesticide accumulation in the environment and potential development of insecticide resistance in the devastating myiasis-causing flies. Consequently the search for alternatives is important. The use of plants in the treatment of wound myiasis in livestock as an alternative to comm

Myiasis is defined as an infestation of the organs and/or tissues of human and other animals by fly maggots. Fly species that normally breed in meat or carrion (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae) may become involved in cutaneous myiasis by colonizing preexisting wounds. Reports of human wound myiasis contracted in hospitals and nursing homes, especially when patients are chronically ill or bed-ridden, are not uncommon across North America and often result in cases of neglect and civil litigation. Based on a case history dealing with this latter situation and circumstances surrounding the t

Lucilia sericata is known as a facultative ectoparasite and it often causes myiasis in open wounds, mouth, nose and eyes of animals and rarely in humans. This case report concerns a 56 year old woman who had right breast cancer surgery. Approximately 10 months after surgery, swelling, pain, redness occurred in the incision site. About two weeks later the site turned into an open wound then fly larvae (97 live larvae) were found. Under t operation conditions, a large surgical wound debridement and debulking were performed on the open wound. The patient was followed for three weeks after the ope

Myiasis is derived from the Greek word, myia, meaning fly. The term was first introduced by Hope in 1840 and refers to the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with dipterous (two-winged) larvae (maggots) which, at least for a certain period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body-substance, or ingested food. Myiasis is the fourth most common travel-associated skin disease and cutaneous myiasis is the most frequently encountered clinical form. Cutaneous myiasis can be divided into three main clinical manifestations: furuncular, creeping (migratory), and wound (trauma
