Wohlfahrt's wound myiasis fly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), is the most important cause of traumatic myiasis in the southern Palaearctic region. Larval stages are obligate parasites and the wounds caused by infestations are very similar to those caused by Old and New World screwworm flies. During the last decade, W. magnifica appears to have expanded its range to parts of northern and central Morocco, and to Crete, Greece. Specimens of W. magnifica were collected in Morocco and Crete either as larvae (preserved in 80% ethanol) or as adults (dry-pinned). Comparison

A 60-year-old, otherwise healthy, male farmer presented to our Dermatology Department with a large ulcer on his lower right leg. The lesion had started as a small papule 6 months before, which became eroded and transformed into a rather rapidly progressive ulcer. On careful inspection, numerous larvae were found moving within the wound. The larvae were analyzed and found to be Lucilia sericata (the green bottle blowfly). The lesion was diagnosed histopathologically as squamous cell carcinoma. The myiasis was treated by submerging the wound in a dilute permanganate potassium solution.

Infestation of animal tissues by dipteran larvae (myiasis) commonly occurs in many species, but it is unusual for humans in temperate regions. Nevertheless, human myiasis is regularly observed in many primary care facilities in the United States. Beyond medical issues associated with treating human myiasis, both the causal agent and the longevity of myiasis can have legal implications, for example, as evidence of neglect. Cases of human myiasis in the United States typically involve imported myiasis from torsalo, Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus, Jr.) (Diptera: Oestridae), or facultative myiasis f

The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic and protective efficacy of ivermectin and permethrin against wound myiasis induced by fleshflies in Riyadh region in sheep. Three different protocols were planned to evaluate efficacy of the selected drugs in addition to recording the myiasis incidence and prevalence among infested farms. The obtained results revealed that genital organs were the most common sites of infestation with myiasis in male and females, with high prevalence in spring and autumn seasons and complete disappearance in summer and winter seasons. Application of permethr

UNLABELLED: Myiasis is the infestation of living tissue by the larvae of flies in the order Diptera. Cutaneous involvement is the most common type of myiasis. Cutaneous myiasis can be subdivided into furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Each subtype is reviewed with discussion of the larvae involved, presenting signs and symptoms, clinical differential diagnoses, and treatment. Preventive measures are also described.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants should be familiar with the causal agents, clinical manifestations, and treatment of human cut

Myiasis is the infestation of tissue by the larvae of flies. We report eight cases of human myiasis in Hong Kong. All patients were nursing home residents with an average age of 81.8 years. Seven patients were bedridden with advanced dementia. Four patients had pre-existing wounds. Five had poor oral hygiene and four of those were on tube feeding. All of the five patients with poor oral hygiene suffered from oral myiasis. Two patients had vaginal infestations and one had wound myiasis in his diabetic foot ulcer. Seven cases were infested by Chrysomya bezziana, an obligatory parasite that requi

Wohlfahrtia magnifica is a frequent fly in countries with high breeding activity: Australia, South Africa or Arab country The parasitological infestation occurred essentially during the summer, favourable period to the biological evolution of the flies. In this work, we report one case of wound myiasis that complicates a cutaneous lesion caused by larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. This observation constitutes the first human case in our country.

Reliable long-term central venous access is a cornerstone in the management of paediatric haematology and oncology patients. The use of chemoport in paediatric populations remains limited, primarily due to concerns regarding peri-procedural risks and associated complications. We aim to present our experience of central venous access device (CVAD) in paediatric-haemato-oncology patients with special focus on chemoport insertion, with respect to standardisation of technique, peri-procedural safety, and complications. The paediatric haematology and oncology patients who underwent CVAD insertion b

Human myiasis caused by Calliphora vicina is rare in Europe. Here we report a case of C. vicina infection occurring in the traumatic leg wound of a healthy 21-year-old man. Firstly, a progressive necrotizing infection developed in the wound despite administration of antibiotics. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from the wound samples. Secondly, during debridement, C. vicina first-instar larvae were isolated from the wound. To our knowledge, this is the first European case of C. vicina wound myiasis associated with severe A. hydrophila infection.

The aim of the present investigation was to get further information about obligate aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacterial communities of the intact and Wohlfahrtia magnifica infested vulval region of sheep. The numbers of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms were lower in samples taken from uninfested mucous membrane and myiatic wounds as well as in the wound fluid as compared to samples originating from the uninfested skin surface. Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae were isolated only from the skin and mucous membrane of uninfested sheep. Gr

In Hungary, 4388 sheep in six flocks were surveyed in June-August of 1992-1995 to gather basic data on wound myiasis, its incidence, the predominant fly species involved and the clinical manifestations of infestation. The pathogenesis and economic significance of wound myiasis, as well as the interrelation of breed and sex with infestation levels, were evaluated. Active wound myiasis was recorded in all flocks, in 17.6% (774/4388) of the inspected sheep. The incidence varied among flocks and inspections from 4.7% to 38.9%, but it was significantly greater in imported breeds (28.8%, 651/2257) t

Myiasis of man and animals is a real welfare problem of world wide distribution particularly in animal raising countries. Studies of myiasis of sheep and goats in North Sinai resulted in the identification of 21 species of myiasis producing flies. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lucilia sericata and the least abundant was M. albina. In general, sheep were more infested with wound myiasis than goats. The overall infestation rate was high in summer, followed by spring then autumn. The least rate of infestation was winter. As to the different areas examined, the high rate

The two most important fly species causing traumatic cutaneous myiasis of sheep in Europe are Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), which causes a form of myiasis known as wound myiasis, mainly in southern and eastern Europe, and Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which causes sheep strike, mainly in the middle latitudes of Europe. Other calliphorid blow-flies play a role mainly as secondary agents of myiasis, but in northern latitudes the L. caesar/illustris group are primary agents. Infestation levels vary greatly from region to region depending on a wide range of factors r

The orientation of adults of the myiasis species Wohlfahrtia magnifica and Lucilia sericata to artificial visual stimuli (cloth targets) and olfactory stimuli ('swormlure-4', a potent screwworm attractant), was studied in sheep pastures near to Sárbogard in Hungary. Experiments with odour-baited cloth targets, enclosed in electrocuting grids, demonstrated that colour was an important factor influencing catches on targets: a black target caught most flies of both species, with other colours in the following order of effectiveness, blue > white > yellow. Wohlfahrtia magnifica did not respond to

In a 66-year-old man, admitted to a nursing home in the summer for conservative treatment of wet gangrene of his foot, wound myiasis was diagnosed. Amputation below the knee was necessary. Flies laying eggs in necrotic wounds probably gained entrance to the patient's room through doors standing open.

The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), became established in the Old World for the first time during 1988, in the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. An obligate parasite of mammals in its larval stages, causing wound myiasis, it is one of the most serious insect pests of livestock in the Americas. To avert a major disaster for the livestock industry and wildlife of Africa and southern Europe, the Libyan Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations launched a massive screwworm eradication programme, based o
