BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries of the upper extremity and hand (UE) can result in notable financial ramifications particularly if they involve surgical intervention. Although most studies in orthopaedics address direct costs, little is known about the personal experience with financial distress following UE trauma surgery.
METHODS: Fourteen patients, identified as having markedly high financial distress using self-reported validated surveys, who received UE trauma surgery were interviewed. Semistructured interviews were conducted until thematic saturation was achieved after sequential themati

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are a global public health issue and represent the second most common type of fracture among the elderly. There remains controversy in the orthopedic community regarding the optimal treatment strategy for DRFs.
METHODS: We will conduct a multicenter, randomized, single-blind, controlled trial to assess the efficacy of surgical versus conservative treatment for distal radius fractures in elderly patients. Sample size calculations are based on the PRWE score, aiming to randomize 456 participants in a 1:1 ratio. Once randomized, patients will be followe

Ulnar stress injuries can arise in athletes participating in repetitive, high-stress activities involving the upper extremities. The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of diagnosing midshaft ulnar stress reactions and underscore the importance of early recognition and intervention. We present three adolescent female athletes who developed midshaft ulnar stress reactions, diagnosed with advanced imaging modalities. Stress reactions of the ulna diaphysis are uncommon injuries, and our case series highlights the importance of having a high index of suspicion in high-risk patients.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic importance of radial translation on functional outcomes in patients treated nonoperatively or surgically for distal radial fractures. It was hypothesized that increased radial translation would be associated with worse functional scores, regardless of treatment modality.
METHODS: This retrospective comparative study included 130 adult patients (aged 18-70 years) with unilateral AO/OTA 2R3A2 distal radius fractures, treated between January 2020 and December 2024. Group 1 (n = 60) underwent closed reduction and plaster casting, whereas group

CONTEXT: As the popularity of tennis increases, so does the rate of injuries experienced by high-school tennis athletes. There is a lack of data on injuries experienced by these athletes, which is needed to inform healthcare professionals of risk and injuries. This study aimed to quantify injury rates among high school tennis players.
DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study via secondary analysis of a national data set.
METHODS: The National Athletic Treatment, Injury and Outcomes Network (NATION) captured injury data submitted by athletic trainers at 147 high schools in 26 states.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most common fractures in adults, with a significant proportion being stable, non-displaced, or minimally displaced. These fractures generally have a low risk of secondary displacement. This study aimed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of short-arm circular casting and volar splint application in the conservative treatment of stable distal radius fractures. Additionally, the study evaluated complication rates, patient comfort, and the feasibility of these two immobilization techniques in emergency department settings.

Spaghetti wrist injuries are complex distal forearm lacerations involving flexor tendons, nerves, and vessels, associated with significant functional morbidity. We present the case of a 64-year-old right-handed man with a deep cut wound to his left forearm and clinical signs of distal ischemia, complete loss of digital flexion, and palmar anesthesia. An urgent examination was performed, identifying sections of the radial and ulnar arteries, median nerve, and injuries to the palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis, superficial and deep flexor tendons of the fingers, and fle

Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures in adults and require treatment approaches tailored to fracture characteristics and patient needs. The primary objective of this study was to compare the 6-month Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) score across three treatment modalities—closed reduction and short-arm casting, external fixation, and volar plate fixation. The null hypothesis was that there would be no difference in PRWE outcomes among the three groups. Secondary objectives included evaluating pain intensity, functional disability, grip strength, and wrist range of mo

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures of OTA/AO types 23B and 23C have a high incidence, and inadequate treatment can lead to complications such as traumatic arthritis, joint pain, and limited wrist function. This study aimed to utilize three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) reconstruction technology and fracture line mapping frequency charts to intuitively and clearly describe the morphological characteristics of distal radius fractures (OTA/AO types 23B and 23C), thereby deepening the understanding of such fractures and providing reference information for this clinical condition.

INTRODUCTION: Rerupture after primary flexor tendon repair of the hand and wrist is a serious complication that can substantially impair hand function and restrict activities of daily living, occupational performance, and recreation. Identifying factors associated with rerupture is essential to optimize surgical techniques and postoperative rehabilitation strategies and to improve patient outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted including patients who underwent surgical repair of flexor tendon injuries of the hand and wrist at a single institution between 201
