Scoping Review of Occupational Therapy for Distal Radius Fractures, Including Complications.

This scoping review is aimed at identifying and mapping occupational therapy-related assessments and interventions reported in prospective interventional studies and case reports on distal radius fractures, including studies addressing complications. Additionally, the review sought to summarize the current evidence in this field and identify areas requiring further research. Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies primarily emphasized impairment-level outcomes, such as range of motion and grip strength, whereas activity, participation, occupational performance, and psychosocial a

Scaphoid waist fractures in the presence of carpal coalitions: a consistent biomechanical weak point?

Carpal coalitions may alter intercarpal kinematics and load transfer. Reported coalition-associated scaphoid fractures show an exclusive predilection for the scaphoid waist, raising the possibility of a non-random biomechanical mechanism with focal stress concentration. These injuries have been associated with delayed union and nonunion. This pattern may justify CT-based assessment and consideration of a lower threshold for early surgical stabilization, including percutaneous screw fixation even in selected nondisplaced waist fractures. However, the currently available evidence is limited to c

Advanced volar locking plate fixation for intra and extra articular distal radius fractures: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common orthopedic injuries, posing significant challenges due to their high prevalence and potential for long-term functional impairment. Volar locking plates have emerged as the gold standard for managing unstable and extra-articular fractures, offering superior outcomes compared to traditional methods. This study evaluates the clinical, radiographic, and functional outcomes of volar locking plate fixation in 34 patients with intra and extra-articular distal radius fractures. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 34 patients treated

Arthroscopically assisted temporary trans-articular headless screw fixation for perilunate injuries: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Perilunate injuries are rare high-energy wrist injuries whose open treatment carries a risk of capsular stiffness and carpal devascularisation. Arthroscopically assisted reduction with temporary fixation aims to limit this morbidity, and temporary trans-articular headless compression screws may provide more rigid scapholunate and lunotriquetral control than Kirschner wires. We asked what the mid-term clinical, radiographic and patient-reported outcomes of this technique are, using the contralateral wrist as a paired control, and whether they differ by injury pattern. METHODS: Retr

Anomalous Flexor Carpi Radialis Anatomy During Volar Distal Radius Approach: Two Case Reports.

Volar locking plates become the standard treatment for distal radius fractures and are mostly applied through volar approaches that rely on the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) as a superficial landmark. Although usually straightforward, anomalous flexor musculature may complicate exposure, misdirect dissection and increase the risk of iatrogenic neurovascular injury. We report two rare anatomical variants encountered during open reduction and internal fixation: FCR brevis (FCRB) associated with anomalous insertion of the pronator quadratus, and complete agenesis of the FCR. Both substantially alte

Precision of photon-counting detector CT compared to conventional CT for total wrist arthroplasty migration: a cadaveric and clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: Implant loosening is a serious complication after total wrist arthroplasty. Radiostereometric analysis has been the gold standard for measurement of implant migration; however, the use of bead free computer tomography radiostereometric analysis (CT-RSA) has emerged as an alternative due to its higher precision. In this study, the precision of a novel photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) was compared to conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT) at different radiation doses. METHODS: One cadaveric wrist with total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) implant was scanned 40 times with

The impact of self-efficacy and sense of coherence on hand disability during the first year after distal radius fracture surgery-a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common surgically treated fractures in adults. While many patients recover well after surgery, a substantial number continue to experience pain, stiffness, and limitations in hand function that affect daily life and well-being. These difficulties are not always explained by physical healing alone. Psychological responses such as worry, low motivation, or reduced confidence in recovery are often observed in clinical encounters. Two psychological constructs, sense of coherence and self-efficacy, have been associated with outcomes in musculos
