Acute Compartment Syndrome of the Thigh After Contusion in a Football Player.

Acute compartment syndrome of the thigh is an exceptionally uncommon condition that can have severe consequences if not promptly and effectively treated. A 19-year-old man presented to our emergency department with severe and progressive pain in his left thigh after sustaining a direct trauma during a football game 24 hours prior. Compartment pressure was assessed, confirming the diagnosis of compartment syndrome arising from a sizable intramuscular hematoma without detection of any other contributing factors. Fasciotomy incisions were closed using the shoelace technique with excellent functio

Injury patterns and demographics in older adult abuse and falls: A comparative study in emergency department settings.

BACKGROUND: Falls and interpersonal violence pose significant threats to older adults, leading to injuries, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits. This study investigates the demographics and injury patterns in older adults (aged 60 and above) who sought ED care due to assaults, comparing them with those who experienced falls to gain a deeper understanding of older adult abuse patterns. METHOD: This study utilizes data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) All Injury Program (2005-2019) to examine injuries among older adults aged 60 years and above.

Exosomes repairment for sciatic nerve injury: a cell-free therapy.

Sciatic nerve injury (SNI) is a common type of peripheral nerve injury typically resulting from trauma, such as contusion, sharp force injuries, drug injections, pelvic fractures, or hip dislocations. It leads to both sensory and motor dysfunctions, characterized by pain, numbness, loss of sensation, muscle atrophy, reduced muscle tone, and limb paralysis. These symptoms can significantly diminish a patient's quality of life. Following SNI, Wallerian degeneration occurs, which activates various signaling pathways, inflammatory factors, and epigenetic regulators. Despite the availability of sev

Epidemiology of Football Injuries of the German Bundesliga: A Media-Based, Prospective Analysis over 7 Consecutive Seasons.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the implementation of a standardised, prospective injury database covering the entire 1st male German football league ("Bundesliga") based on publicly available media data. For the first time, various media sources were used simultaneously as the external validity of media-generated data was low in the past compared to data obtained by way of the "gold standard", i.e. by the teams' medical staffs. METHODS: The study covers 7 consecutive seasons (2014/15-2020/21). The primary data source was the online version of the sport-specific journal "kicker Sportmagazin™

Injuries and Use of Safety Equipment in River Surfing.

BACKGROUND: River surfing (also called "rapid surfing") involves surfing on stationary waves that are artificially created or placed in rivers and is gaining popularity, especially among surfers in landlocked areas but also among athletes without experience in ocean surfing. Different wave setups, types of boards, and types of fins, as well as the use of safety equipment, can lead to overuse and injuries. PURPOSE: To analyze the incidence, mechanisms, and risk factors of river surfing-related injuries for different types of waves and to evaluate the usage and appropriateness of safety equipme

Reconstruction of Finger Soft Tissue Defects With a Thinned Free Anterolateral Thigh Flap.

BACKGROUND: Reconstructing complex soft tissue defects of the finger requires both functional and aesthetic aspects. There are many free tissue transfers as suitable options for digital resurfacing. The anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is not the first choice for reconstruction of this area because it has the disadvantage that the subcutaneous tissue is too thick; however, its use as a thinned form has yet to be described much. This study presents the flap thinning technique in the small-sized ALT flap for the finger soft tissue defect. METHOD: From May 2009 to March 2018, 10 patients with comp

Pulsed Red and Blue Photobiomodulation for the Treatment of Thigh Contusions and Soft Tissue Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Contusion and soft tissue injuries are common in sports. Photobiomodultion, light and laser therapy, is an effective aid to increase healing rates and improve function after various injury mechanisms. However, it is unclear how well photobiomodulation improves function after a contusion soft tissue injury. This study aimed to determine the effects of a pulsed red and blue photobiomodulation light patch on muscle function following a human thigh contusion injury. DESIGN: Single-blinded randomized control trial design. METHODS: We enrolled 46 healthy participants. Participants complet

A Complex Surgical Case of a Morel-Lavallee Lesion.

A Morel-Lavallee lesion (MLL) is a rare internal denudement injury of skin and hypodermis from deep fascia, usually occurring hours to days after an inciting trauma. A common location is the pelvis or thigh where there is prominent vascularization and may mimic diagnoses such as deep vein thrombosis or contusion. Fluid collections that persist despite conservative management require surgical intervention and frequent and prolonged hospitalizations as in this case of a patient with a persistent MLL. We emphasize early imaging for diagnosis and surgical service involvement, as delay may lead to

The goals of care in acute setting for geriatric patients in case of a hip fracture.

PURPOSE: For geriatric hip fracture patients, the decision between surgery and palliative, non-operative management is made through shared decision making (SDM). For this conversation, a physician must be familiar with the patient's goals of care (GOC). These are predominantly unknown for hip fracture patients and challenging to assess in acute setting. The objective was to explore these GOC of geriatric patients in case of a hip fracture. METHODS: An expert panel gathered possible outcomes after a hip fracture, which were transformed into statements where participants indicated their relativ

A Focus on Non-Amputation Combat Extremity Injury: 2001-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Extremity injuries have comprised the majority of battlefield injuries in modern U.S. conflicts since World War II. Most reports have focused on serious injuries only and, to date, no reports have described the full extent of combat extremity injuries, from mild to severe, resulting from post-9/11 conflicts. This study aims to identify and characterize the full spectrum of non-amputation combat-related extremity injury and extend the findings of previous reports. METHODS: The Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database was queried for all extremity injured service members (SMs) dep
