PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Several former studies show the treatment of slipped epiphysis of the femoral head (SEFH). Its reason is rather unknown. On the other hand the rare traumatic SEFH takes place due to a real accident. According to the literature these injuries are treated like chronic SEFHs. The aim of this study is to show the differences in pathology and treatment of an acute traumatic SEFH in relationship to the chronic SEFH.

Athletic traumatic hip subluxations are rare. Classic radiographic features have been well described. This case highlights the potential pitfalls of immediate magnetic resonance imaging. Femoral head contusions and acetabular rim fractures are common associated findings usually apparent with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, in this case an MRI done 3 hours post injury failed to show any edema in either location, making the appearance of these findings on subsequent MRIs difficult to interpret. An acute MRI more than 48 hours post injury may have been more helpful.

Muscle haematomas (MH) represent 10-25% of all bleeds in patients with severe haemophilia. We performed a cross-sectional survey on current practice in the management of MH with participation from 22 consultants. The respondents reported 492 MH/year, corresponding an average of 25/centre, mostly associated with trauma. Iliopsoas (55%), calf (18%) and thigh (18%) bleeds were scored as most serious. A 79-year-old man, who was in a helpless situation due to cardiac decompensation, suffered dog bite injuries on the left thigh and in the genital region while still alive. Two extensive soft-tissue defects with contused and bruised wound edges were surrounded by multiple slit-like skin lesions. The outer genitals were almost completely missing. Because of surgical emergency treatment, molecular biological investigations were no longer possible. Therefore, the cause of the bite injuries had to be determined solely on the basis of the documented morphology of the wounds.

The long-term objective of this work is to understand the mechanisms by which electrical stimulation based movement therapies may harness neural plasticity to accelerate and enhance sensorimotor recovery after incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI). An adaptive neuromuscular electrical stimulation (aNMES) paradigm was implemented in adult Long Evans rats with thoracic contusion injury (T8 vertebral level, 155+/-2 Kdyne). In lengthy sessions with lightly anesthetized animals, hip flexor and extensor muscles were stimulated using an aNMES control system in order to generate desired hip movements.
