Aural Myiasis, a Rare Cause of Earache.

Myiasis of the ear is an infestation of the ear by maggots (the larval stage of flies). In the literature, there are only few cases reported about aural myiasis. It is more common to occur in tropical regions, where humidity and warm weather provide a good environment for this infestation. In this paper, a 12-year-old boy is reported to have unilateral earache for 3-day duration. Examination of the painful ear showed a tympanic membrane perforation with larvae (maggots) in the middle ear. They were removed by using a forceps and gentle irrigation of ear to expel any remnant. Further management

Aural myiasis: case report.

Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates with dipterous larvae. Aural myiasis involves infestation of the external ear and/or middle ear. It is a rare clinical state that usually occurs in patients who have mental or physical disabilities. Although myiasis is a self-limiting disease, it can be associated with fatal complications like penetration within the central nervous system. We present a 87-year-old patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease with aural myiasis and also discuss the clinical presentation and efective therapies with a review of the literature.

Myiasis of the ear: a review with entomological aspects for the otolaryngologist.

OBJECTIVE: Myiasis is the infestation of live humans (or animals) by fly larvae. Although the diagnosis is relatively straightforward, how to best treat aural myiasis has not been well described in the literature. This comprehensive literature review, therefore, was performed to identify current management principles in aural myiasis, especially with regard to the causative fly family. In addition, we explore the possible relationship between aural myiasis and the highly lethal intracranial myiasis. DATA SOURCES: Literature review using the Medline database (PubMed), Scopus, and Google Schola

Aural myiasis caused by Parasarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux (Thomson) in Thailand.

Herein is reported the first case in Thailand of aural myiasis caused by the flesh fly, Parasarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux (Thomson). A 5-day-old infant was taken to hospital with a slightly bloody ear. Two fly larvae exiting the ear and another recovered by a physician were alive, and confirmed as P. dux species from adult examination results. This case brought attention to the need for protection against synanthropic flies, particularly for infants and/or hearing impaired patients.

The human aural myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata.

Myiasis is a rare, worldwide, human disease with seasonal variation, caused by developing larvae of a variety of fly species. It can be dangerous when infestations penetrate into the brain. In the available literature, we have found only a few papers concerning ear myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. Here, we report 2 cases of aural myiasis. Early intervention (surgical removal, occlusion) in these cases should prevent complications. Larvae, for further examination, should be killed by immersion in very hot water, then preserved in an ethanol.

Myiasis of the external and middle ear.

Aural myiasis is a rare otolaryngological disease typically seen in poor hygienic conditions and medically disabled patients. We present a case of aural myiasis in a healthy woman who had no apparent risk factors for infestation and required extensive surgical intervention. We also discuss the literature of documented otolaryngological cases of myiasis and effective therapies. In our patient, symptoms of otalgia, otorrhea, and tinnitus resolved after multiple attempts at extraction resulted in successful eradication of larvae. The patient required tympanoplasty to reconstruct the damaged exter

Aural myiasis in an infant.

Aural myiasis is a rare clinical state that usually occurs in developing countries and in patients who mentally retarded or have poor personal hygiene. However, the prevalence has decreased over the years, and now it is very rare. The authors describe a case of aural myiasis caused by Wohlfartia magnifica in a five-month-old infant. The treatment used was a combination of suctioning and microsurgical forceps under an operative microscope. Additionally, topical and oral antibiotics were given to avoid secondary infection.

Bilateral aural myiasis (Wohlfahrtia magnifica): a case with chronic suppurative otitis media.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae and aural myiasis is a rare clinic condition often occuring in children or mentally retarded people. We report the case of an unusual presentation of a bilateral aural myiasis in a mentally retarded patient with bilateral chronic otitis media caused by the third instar larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Two larvae were located on the other ear canal while two additional larvae were located in the middle ear cavity and were removed through perforation of the tympanic membrane. Treatment of aural myiasis is based on removal of the maggots and cleansing of

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with atrophic rhinitis and nasal myiasis.

Hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by hypohidrosis/anhidrosis, hypotrichosis, dysodontia and heat intolerance. Most common mode of transmission is X-linked recessive, showing complete expression in males, and only partial manifestations in the female carrier heterozygotes. Features like atrophic rhinitis, nasal and aural myiasis, syndactyly, cleft lip and/or palate, mental retardation and immunodeficiency are uncommonly seen in this syndrome. We hereby report a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with unusual features of atrophic rhini

Aural Myiasis by Wohlfahrtia magnifica: Case Report.

A 5-year-old child living in Erzurum, Turkey, complaining of otalgia, otorrhea and pruritus in the right ear for three days, was examined. Otoscopic examination at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology revealed live maggots in the external auditory canal. Ten maggots were recovered and were identified as third stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Local and systemic antibiotic therapies were applied. No pathological findings were present at the follow-up examination after 15 days of therapy.

[Human myiasis in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Period 2000 / 2005].

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae which, at least for a short period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body-substance, or ingested food. The objective of this study was to identify the flies producing myiasis in Bahía Blanca city, Argentina, from 01/03/2000 to 31/05/2005. Seventeen clinical cases were studied. The larvae obtained from lesions were forwarded from laboratories and from public and private hospitals. Part of the larvae were fixed in alcohol 70 masculine and processed according to the Mazza & Jörg technique (1939).

Post-traumatic stress disorder in women with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia, are heterogeneous entities with a major socioeconomic burden. Multimodal treatment programmes have shown greater efficacy than conventional approaches for these patients, at least in the short term. A profound understanding of chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome patients treated in multimodal treatment programmes is important for their development and to provide insight into these conditions. AIM: To provide a comprehensive and objective description of medical, psychosocial and sleep characteristics of the treatment

Aural myiasis in a patient with Alzheimer's disease.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae feeding on the host's tissue. We report on a 49-year-old patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease with aural myiasis. Clinical examination revealed sanguineous and smeary otorrhoea on the left side with 16 alive maggots occupying the ear. They were removed from the external auditory canal and classified as larvae of the family Sarcophagida. Aural manifestation of myiasis may become dangerous if the petrous bone is affected. Entomological aspects, clinical characteristics, and treatment of this rare disease are reviewed.

Aural myiasis in children and literature review.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae. The term "myiasis" is derived from the Greek word "myia" meaning fly. Aural myiasis is a rare clinical state and occurs frequently in children. In this article, six children with aural myiasis, caused by the fly larvae, are reported because of unusual presentation. All of the children with aural myiasis were associated with chronic otitis media. In the treatment, a combination of suctioning and alligator forceps was used to remove maggots under the light microscopic field. Additionally, antibiotics were used in all children. Thus, aural myiasis is suc
