OBJECTIVE: The modified Stoppa combined with iliac fossa approach has gained increasing popularity. Although early clinical outcomes have been satisfactory, extensive long-term clinical outcomes are relatively scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the medium- and long-term outcomes of this approach for complex acetabular fractures.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study involving 57 patients with complex acetabular fractures from January 2009 to January 2016. All fractures were treated with the modified Stoppa combined with iliac fossa approach. Follow-up was at least 5 years. Pr

Understanding the challenges football (soccer) players face during adolescence is fundamental to avoid disruptions in their development due to injury. This mini review will describe basic concepts of somatic growth and biological maturity, examine data from 53 prospective epidemiological studies on high-level youth football players and discuss how age, growth and maturity may affect the injury patterns observed. Based on the existing evidence, at least every third player sustains an injury during a football season. The thigh (median for studies of boys: 25%, median for girls: 21%), ankle (b: 1

Animal bite injuries are common in free-ranging cats in Taiwan, and most fatal animal bite events are presumed to be caused by dogs. However, speculation regarding animal abuse may occur when carcasses with prominent injuries are found by members of the general public. Local animal protection offices and veterinary clinicians sometimes face difficulties in convincing these individuals by identifying specific features of dog bite injuries in cat carcasses. Therefore, the present study analyzed injury patterns and distribution in 31 necropsied cats with animal bite injuries, and applied deoxyrib

Most of the anterior thigh injuries are contusions or strains, however, some of these injuries can be career ending. Early diagnosis and correct treatment are key to successful outcome. Analyzing injury mechanism and adding both clinical and imaging findings, clinicians can make the right treatment decisions already often in the acute phase of the injury. Low grade contusions and muscle strains are treated well with planned rehabilitation, but complete tendon injuries or avulsions can require operative treatment. Also, neglected minor injuries could lead to chronic disabilities and time lost f

We report the case of an 89-year-old woman who was struck by a car while walking and fell to the ground. She had hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cerebral infarction requiring medication. She was transported to a nearby acute critical care center. Upon arrival, her vital signs were stable. A physical examination showed right facial and hip contusion, right shoulder tenderness, a right elbow contusional lacerated wound, and bilateral knee abrasion wounds. She vomited when her face moved. Radiological studies showed a right proximal humerus fracture and a right minor ischial fracture. Her injury

Functional electrical stimulation is an effective way to rebuild hindlimb motor function after spinal cord injury. However, no site map exists to serve as a reference for implanting stimulator electrodes. In this study, rat models of thoracic spinal nerve 9 contusion were established by a heavy-impact method and rat models of T6/8/9 spinal cord injury were established by a transection method. Intraspinal microstimulation was performed to record motion types, site coordinates, and threshold currents induced by stimulation. After transection (complete injury), the core region of hip flexion migr

Experience-dependent white matter plasticity offers new potential for rehabilitation-induced recovery after neurotrauma. This first-in-human translational experiment combined myelin water imaging in humans and genetic fate-mapping of oligodendrocyte lineage cells in mice to investigate whether downhill locomotor rehabilitation that emphasizes eccentric muscle actions promotes white matter plasticity and recovery in chronic, incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). In humans, of 20 individuals with SCI that enrolled, four passed the imaging screen and had myelin water imaging before and after a 12-

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation of pain in children after trauma can sometimes be difficult; in particular, a knee pain in a child could originate from the hip, until evidence of the contrary. Often is the low-energy trauma that leads to a joint dislocation in children. Furthermore, the present guidelines state that a hip dislocation in a child should be replaced within 6 (maximum 12) hours, to reduce the risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: The increase in the incidence of osteoarthritis of the hip (coxarthrosis) in young patients with high functionality requirements and the development of new materials in the last twenty years have resulted in an increase in the number of surgeries involving hip resurfacing procedures. There has also been an increase in associated periprosthetic fractures, which currently occur in 1%-2% of cases. According to the medical literature, fractures of this type can be treated conservatively, using reduction and synthesis or through prosthetic revision.
CASE REPORT: Patient aged 69 years w

The impact between acetabulum and femoral neck is another possible mechanism of femoral neck fracture.Direct trauma of the greater trochanter may not be able to fully explain the mechanism underlying femoral neck fracture. In this study, we sought to investigate whether anterior femoroacetabular impingement are associated with femoral neck fractures.A total of 36 patients with femoral neck fracture who had undergone total hip arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty were included in this study. These patients were divided into 2 groups: labrum tear group and normal labrum group. Patients' age, gender,

Determining the rate and severity of injuries incurred through sport is accepted as the primary step towards designing, implementing and evaluating injury prevention programmes. The aim of this study was to determine the injury incidence rate and characteristics of male field hockey athletes participating in the Irish Hockey League. Athletes from eight field hockey teams were assigned to an online reporting system, where they logged injuries as they were incurred. Injuries were defined as any physical complaint. Coaches and physiotherapists were contacted weekly to corroborateinjuries. Overall

A 46-year-old man presented with a 4-week history of bruising with subcutaneous nodules and weight loss. He also had a 2-week history of progressive back and hip pain. He had been diagnosed with stage Ib cutaneous melanoma 30 months previously, which had been fully excised. A sentinel lymph node biopsy was negative. On examination, there were five skin lesions at different stages. Each had spontaneously appeared as a bruise with a central subcutaneous nodule, and the bruising then faded to leave a persistent subcutaneous nodule. Excision of one of the nodules demonstrated a 4.5 mm diameter par

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital and hospital emergency care guidelines have been developed for patients with suspected hip fracture. Initial radiography can identify a number of patients with other injuries, generally pelvic fractures and hip contusions. Little is known about the prognosis for these patients. The aim of this study is twofold: i) to investigate the injury pattern of patients assessed in prehospital emergency care as suffering from a suspected hip fracture and ii) to compare clinical outcomes between patients with verified hip fracture (HF) and those with other hip injuries (OHI).

Motor vehicle collisions cause substantial mortality, morbidity, and expense worldwide. Certain types of injuries are more likely to result from frontal versus side-impact collisions, and knowledge of these specific patterns and why they occur aids in accurate and efficient diagnosis of traumatic injuries. Although the proper use of seat belts decreases crash-related mortality during frontal impact, certain injury patterns to the torso are directly attributed to restraint use. The spectrum of seat belt-related injuries ranges from mild skin and soft-tissue contusions to traumatic bowel injurie
